May 12, 2010
Whenever a application needs internet and connection fails, I get a message dialog

This application requires network access. Enable mobile network or Wi-Fi to download data.
and two buttons, Settings, Cancel.
How do I detect there is no internet connection?
How do I popup a same dialog in my application?

I bought a used working EVO. I activated it and I noticed that when I turn it on, The data connection does not start. When I go into Settings/Wireless & networks, the Monile Network says Connection failed. If I turn it off and back on, it connects fine. Is there a setting that I am missing that is causing this problem? I rooted it before activating so I don't know if I should take it back to stock. But I would prefer not to.

I've used Twidroid Pro for about a month now, but I've never tried the built in search feature up until today. I can search for "Tweets" without a problem, but when I search for "Users" I get a Twidroid Error: Connection Failed every time. Has anyone else been getting this error? Any ideas on how to fix it? I would send a report to Twidroid but I can't figure out how to contact them from their site.

I am attempting to upgrade my ROM from the 1.7v. I dl'd the RUU file and did everything as required. However, when the bootloader tries to connect I get a prompt, "ERROR[171]:USB Connection ERROR". It asks me to make sure that the phone is connected to the USB cable and for the USB cable to be connected to the PC. Both are connected but I noticed that the phone is powered off. It will not power back on while connected. It will once I disconnect it from USB cable. This leads me to believe that the phone starts to do what it is supposed to but somehow disconnects.

I would like advice from those with 2.2 on Orange. I've had my Desire for 2 months now and love it-apart from one thing-the damned Internet connection. Quite often, with a strong 3G+ (HSDPA) signal, my internet connection fails to load data. Then, a few minutes later, in the same location, it works perfectly. I know for a fact that this is not a network only problem. The reason I know this is because I previously used the exact same SIM in my iphone for 6 months in the very same locations and it always worked perfectly.
Therefore, my strong suspicion is that the problem is a result of the combination of the Orange branding on a Desire and the network itself. I'm sure I read of a couple of posters here who had the very same problems and when they moved to 2.2 the problem disappeared. Can anyone confirm? I've been waiting patiently for the Orange update to 2.2 but am getting fed up and I'm concerned that the Orange bloatware may still cause an issue after this. Hence, I'm considering a debrand and update myself.

I picked up my new incredible last week (Awesome!). It's been working great. However, within the last day, I've been getting an error message which reads "Connection Failed: This application requires network access. Enable mobile network or Wi-Fi to download data." I've gotten this message when initiating the browser, going into email, etc. Of course, I can't access anything via the web.
When I go to settings, mobile network is checked off, although it does say "turning on..."

I'm using ThreadSafeClientConnManager to manage a pool of client connections, because my application has several threads, which are simultaneously connecting to a webserver.
Abstract sample code:
CODE:..............
Now lets say on of this threads is downloading a large file, but then the user of my application is switching to another activity/screen. Therefor the file is needless and I'd like to abort this download connection.
In ThreadSafeClientConnManager I found this method: public ClientConnectionRequest requestConnection (HttpRoute route, Object state) Returns a new ClientConnectionRequest, from which a ManagedClientConnection can be obtained or the request can be aborted.
So far I've been using:
CODE:.........
Now from what I understand, I've to use:
httpclient.getConnectionManager().requestConnection(HttpRoute route, Object state);
And that's the point where I'm stuck. I assume that for the route I can just use new HttpRoute(new HttpHost("10.0.0.1")) or whatever my server is, but what to put in for Object state?
And second, as soon as I've the ClientConnectionManager I can call getConnection(long timeout, TimeUnit tunit). But then from there, how I do I execute my HttpGet httpRequest = new HttpGet(URL_TO_FILE); as I did before with HttpResponse response = (HttpResponse) httpclient.execute(httpRequest);?
I've been gone through the documentation and tried out quite a few different things, but I wasn't able to obtain a working solution. Therefor any suggestions and/or code examples are more than welcome.

Is there any way to have the directions come through my audio speakers in my Equinox? I have the phone synced up properly, and calls work great. I was navigating the other day, and a call came in and I answered with the handsfree system in the car. When directions came up, it cut in the call, and announced the directions over the speakers. Is there any way to directly do this for navigation only?
Another quick question. I have my phone set up with my Mac Book Pro. I can send files with bluetooth to the laptop, but when I go to browse the phone from the computer, it says connection failed. I do have ftp turned on on the phone.

having been notified that my x10 mini required an update I connected to PC using PC companion. The update failed halfway through and could not be restarted (battery was fully charged at start of update).
The phone now will not switch on and only displays a triangle with an attention symbol in the middle of it. I have tried the reset (home button and power on together) and also have tried to connect to PC companion to re-try update, however because the the phone only displays the triangle i cannot connect to PC and therefore cannot load software update. I effectively now have a very pretty paper weight.

I'm coding a very basic FTP client on top of my application and I have 2 activities. The first one is the file explorer and the second one is the image viewer. Once I click on the image filename on the explorer, I want to pass the connection to the other activity to handle extra stuff. Basically, I want to keep the same org.apache.commons.net.ftp.FTPClient object (which handles the connection) alive in-between the 2 activities. I know I can't pass an object inside an intent so I don't know what my best bets are.

What's the technical term for being able to have voice connection and data connection simultaneously? Like AT&T was promoting heavily for a while.Apparently, the new T-Mobile Vibrant has this capability. A friend got one and was accessing the web while talking to me, double jealous now.I have benn lusting after the Verizon version, Fascinate, and wondering if there is any chance it will as well.

If my screen locks while I have a wifi connection, then the connection is lost when I unlock the phone.First, is this perhaps deliberate, to save power? Also, either way, when I unlock the screen and go into wifi settings, I see that the phone is trying to make a wifi connection, but it never succeeds, even though it's my home network and I'm in the same room as the router. It just states 'Obtaining address.

Long time reader, first time poster here. How does one know if the Epic is using the wifi connection as opposed to using the 3G connection? When wifi is connected both that and the 3G connection shows at the top. So which one is in control per se? And how can it be verified?

Just got the full version of Lock 2.0; skipped the free demo since I pretty much knew this is what I wanted. However, once I installed it; when I go to open Lock 2.0 for the menu; the screen that says, "Please wait while we download the default skin..." pops up, but just as quick as that appears, a box stating, "Downloading failed, restart app to retry, make sure you have unplugged your usb connection"
This is pretty annoying, as so far I've tried:
1. Killing the app and restarting it
2. Rebooting the phone
3. Uninstalling and Installing
Nothing is working and I really want to start using this app! I even downloaded the demo free version to see maybe it was an issue between the paid and free; but same issues. I'm currently rocking a HTC Magic running Sense UI 1.5. Anyone encounter similar problems? or possibly know of any way to fix this?

I am new to smartphones and thought that this might be good for others who are new and don't have the unlimited data plan grandfathered in to know.
This was posted in reply to another question I had had about Pandora so the credit goes to poster MeVirtually.
By default the wi-fi setting is set to go to sleep (and use cellular data instead) when the screen is off, which will most likely happen while you are streaming music as well as other things. To change it so the wi-fi never turns off, to into the phone's menu -> wireless and network -> wi-fi settings -> tap the menu button and select advanced which has an option for wi-fi sleep policy that had been defaulted to sleep "when screen turns off". There you have the option to change it to "never" or "never when plugged in".

I have an Android Spinner and I'd like to get a callback when the user selects something from its popup dialog. It seems like
setOnItemClickListener() or setOnItemSelectedListener()
would be the right method to use, but neither get invoked when I select one of the items in the spinner. Is there a correct way to do this? Per commonsware's suggestion, I did the following, but my onItemSelected() method is never being called:
final Spinner spinner = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinner);
spinner.setAdapter( new ArrayAdapter<SettingValue>(getContext(), android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1, android.R.id.text1, setting.getSettingValues() ) );
spinner.setOnItemSelectedListener( new OnItemSelectedListener() {
public void onItemSelected(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position, long id) { Log.d("BOOGA");
final SettingValue settingValue = (SettingValue)parent.getSelectedItem();
final Editor edit = getContext().getSharedPreferences( PREFS_CONTEXT_NAME, Context.MODE_PRIVATE).edit();
edit.putString(setting.name(), settingValue.name());
edit.commit();
} public void onNothingSelected(AdapterView<?> parent) { // do nothing
} } );

I would like to create my own DateTimePicker Dialog. Therefor I build a layout that I use in my Dialog. My Dialog starts when I click on a Button. When the Dialog opens you can set date and time data. There is still a Button to close the Dialog. This Button calls Dialog.dismiss(). But it fails. Here is some code. Can someone tell me, what I do wrong?
public class CreateActivity extends Activity{ private TextView mDateTimeDisplay;
private Dialog dateTimePicker;
private int mYear; private int mMonth; private int mDay; private int mHour; private int mMinute;
static final int DATE_DIALOG_ID = 0;
@Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(de.android.todo.R.layout.create);
//http://babukuma.com/2010/01/android-custom-component- datetimepicker_29.html
mDateTimeDisplay = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.dateTimeDisplay);
final Calendar c = Calendar.getInstance();
mYear = c.get(Calendar.YEAR); mMonth = c.get(Calendar.MONTH);
mDay = c.get(Calendar.DAY_OF_MONTH); mHour = c.get(Calendar.HOUR_OF_DAY);
mMinute = c.get(Calendar.MINUTE); dateTimePicker = new Dialog(this);
dateTimePicker.setContentView(R.layout.datetimepicker);
dateTimePicker.setTitle("DateTimePicker");
dateTimePicker.setCancelable(true);
DatePicker dp = (DatePicker) dateTimePicker.findViewById(R.id.datePicker);
dp.init(mYear, mMonth, mMonth, onDateChangedListener);
TimePicker tp = (TimePicker) dateTimePicker.findViewById(R.id.timePicker);
tp.setIs24HourView(true);
tp.setOnTimeChangedListener(onTimeChangedListener);
// display the current date updateDisplay();
} public void onClickShowMyDialog(final View v){ showDialog(DATE_DIALOG_ID);
} public void onClickCloseDialog(final View v){ dateTimePicker.dismiss();
} @Override protected Dialog onCreateDialog(int id) { switch (id) {
case DATE_DIALOG_ID: return dateTimePicker;
} return null;

I'm new at programming with Android... I'm stucked at the Network topic...
Basically this is what i'm trying to do:
I wan to send some instructions using the Http protocol to a device which has a static Ip address through a private Lan Network...
So first of all I'ved Tested the Code by connecting to a wesite and everything was Ok, I could confirm the connection was made through the HttpURLConnection ResponseCode()=200 (equals to HTTP_OK) ...So my Code could access the INTERNET. But then i created a Lan Network with the Device mentionned above I couldn't have any Connection to it...neither to other devices (Pc attached to the Network)
My App gets no response...the main Screen switches to a Black untitled Screen...Is there a Permission i have to request through the MANIFEST.XML File for Lan Networks as there is a one for INTERNET?...
