Android :: Implement Flip Effect Between Activities?
Mar 20, 2009
You've probably seen the effect on the iPhone when you go to the next screen, it flips the screen, making it appear, like you just flipped over a card and a new screen appeared. There is a demo of something similar in the APIDemos (Views/Animation/ 3D Transition), but the transitions are between elements of the same page. Is there a way to implement the flip effect between Activities (in the same process)?

I want to display the same options menu on all of my application's activities. I created a generic Activity that implements the menu, and all my further activies extend it. The problem: when I need to extend other specific activities, like ListActivity and MapActivity, I can't figure out how to extend the generic activity and add the List or Map behaviour to the new class. To deal with the issue I had to create three different generic activities, each extending Activity, ListActivity and MapActivity.I've tried creating an abstract activity but it doesn't work, I would need to extend two classes at the same time. I could try interfaces but since I can't implement methods, I would have to paste the menu implementation all over the second-level classes, right?

I have the giant clock/weather widget on my homescreen (the one that comes on the phone when you first get it and the one most people probably use). I have seen animations of this clock on the HTC site that show the digits flipping over. And you would think it would do that anyway based on the design. However, I noticed my doesn't really flip. The digits just change instantaneously. No flipping animation. Is this just mine or is that how it is? I was actually hoping it would flip because I always thought it looked neat.

What event in an Activity is called when the screen is flipped out to expose the keyboard on a G1? I need to save some instance variables, but it seems like onCreate is being called without onPause, onStop, or saveInstanceState being called first.

As I'm reorganizing my main home screen (HTC Desire), I find that the original HTC 4x2 takes up too much space especially because I don't care about the weather part of it. I do like the "flip clock" design though. I have looked around for an alternative and have found the following solutions:
BeautifulWidget small home widgetThis looks nice, especially with the right skin, but it's still a 4x1 widget and the clock itself is not centered even when hiding the weather part of it. Is it possible at all to have the clock centered? Digital World Clock widgetThis one is a 2x1 widget without weather, which means I can center it at the top of the screen. Unfortunately the date display is bogus on a French locale phone, it does not respect the date format (day month year) and the name of the day of the week (Thursday) gets displayed as a number (5) I have contacted the author about that, I'll see if he replies.

I would like to have my android app ignore flip, is that possible? I added android:screenOrientation="portrait" to all of my activities but that is about as effective as the close door button on an elevator.

I have an unbranded standard HTC Desire and wondered if there's such a widget that looks the same as the HTC flip clock but without the weather feature as shown in the pic below? I don't want to mess around with the standard rom though.

I got my hands on a Sprint Samsung Moment couple of days ago and already am missing my little HTC Touch Vogue(Customized with Windows Mobile 6.5). I was always flashing all kinds of custom ROMs into the Vogue and realize it's not that easy on these android phones. Anyway, I would like to know if there are android apps that will display the Flip clock with the weather and also if there are widgets or apps which will display the email, text message and missed call count on the desktop. I don't care for the notification bar so much.
On another note, I am using K-9 Mail for email but now I get notification from both the stock email client as well as K-9. How does one make K-9 the default? The latest version of K-9 has taken out the Email frequency check from the settings so I'm not sure hot to set the interval for email check.

I tried out Flyscreen the other day and found its card-based flipping through rss/facebook/twitter/weather to be very fluid and pretty. The trouble is, I don't really want that as my lockscreen (besides which, it doesn't seem to truly lock the screen). Does anyone know of a similar app that creates a widget I can flip through in a similar way on a homescreen?

If anyone craves a return to the flipping flip-clock, Kendon over at the MoDaco forum's has brought it back as an update.zip - you will need to have a rooted phone with a custom ROM/recovery image, but I can vouch for me that it has worked perfectly without a wipe - and no noticeable slowing down.

I downloaded Panda so the I can use a theme it works with. It works fine and I am always giving a chance to use Panda or HTC Sense when I hit the home key. This is a pain so I opted to use the HTC Sense as default. But I can't see where it allows me to use the Panda again. I can't figure out how to get those 2 choices back. Except for deleting Panda and reinstalling it. Am I missing something? And is there a way to flip between the choices another way?

I'm testing an app on a Droid. It's a kind of card matching game. I'd like to keep the cards physically located in the same place on the screen regardless of a screen rotation. For example, I can put my thumb on a card, rotate the phone any way I please and the card stays fixed under my thumb. However, the orientation of the content of the card will change to match the current phone rotation. I handle this by transforming the card grid in onCreate. This works fine for 90 degree rotations, but if I do a fast 180 degree flip from one landscape mode to another the screen simply flips and the Activity is NOT destroyed and recreated.
This seems contrary to the documentation:
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/R.attr.html#configChanges
"public static final int configChanges Since: API Level 1
Specify one or more configuration changes that the activity will handle itself. If not specified, the activity will be restarted if any of these configuration changes happen in the system. Otherwise, the activity will remain running and its Activity.onConfigurationChanged method called with the new configuration. "
I am NOT specifying any configChanges in my AndroidManifest.xml file, so it seems that the activity SHOULD be destroyed and recreated. Why isn't it? Is there some way I specify that it should be destroy/ recreated?
