Android :: How To Implement Generic Activity - List And Map Activities?

Oct 13, 2010

I want to display the same options menu on all of my application's activities. I created a generic Activity that implements the menu, and all my further activies extend it. The problem: when I need to extend other specific activities, like ListActivity and MapActivity, I can't figure out how to extend the generic activity and add the List or Map behaviour to the new class. To deal with the issue I had to create three different generic activities, each extending Activity, ListActivity and MapActivity.I've tried creating an abstract activity but it doesn't work, I would need to extend two classes at the same time. I could try interfaces but since I can't implement methods, I would have to paste the menu implementation all over the second-level classes, right?

Android :: Implement Flip Effect Between Activities?

Mar 20, 2009

You've probably seen the effect on the iPhone when you go to the next screen, it flips the screen, making it appear, like you just flipped over a card and a new screen appeared. There is a demo of something similar in the APIDemos (Views/Animation/ 3D Transition), but the transitions are between elements of the same page. Is there a way to implement the flip effect between Activities (in the same process)?

Android :: How To Implement UI For Re-ordering List?

Feb 18, 2010

I have an Android app where users can add items to a ListView, and I'd like them to be able to re-order the items in the list however they want (as opposed to just offering them different sort orders). It's easy enough to add a position setting for the items (they come from the DB) but what kind of UI elements are available for the user to indicate the desired ordering? Is there a pattern anyone has seen implemented for this? I have not seen anything on Android that does anything like this, except the home screen which is similar but looks a little bit beyond my expertise at this point. The best I can think of is to use a long click and context menu to "move up" or "move down". Any better ideas?

I'm using now relative layout and 4 text fields and I think it isn't a good way.I think it's too heavy (full list will contain: 30 relative layouts and 30*5 = 150 text fields).

Android :: List Of All Instantiated Activities

Jun 2, 2010

Anybody know an easy way for an app to find all the instances of all the Activities currently alive in the current process?

Yes, I could register each one into a static List<> someplace from the constructor of each Activity, but that requires developers to remember to put that code into every Activity constructor, which is going to eventually miss one or two (not to mention keep the Activity alive longer than it should be, though that could be fixed by holding WeakReferences instead of strong ones, but that still misses the point), and that's going to mean one or two escape the list. I'd prefer to have a way to see all of them from Android's/Dalvik's point of view.

I am on my first Android application and I am on a timeline so details and examples will be useful since my knowledge is still minimal. Android :: Implement An Activity That Uses ExpandableListView

Sep 3, 2010

Im trying to implement an activity that uses ExpandableListView and I have gotten so far but now I have found some strange behavior.

My activity is meant to record food intake as specified by the user. they have a choice of menus (breakfast, lunch and dinner - the outer group) which expand to show their contents.
when a user clicks on an inner menu item a dialog appears asking them for the qty. once they enter a qty and dismiss the dialog the text on the menu item changes to reflect the quantity of that item that has been consumed

The above image shows the list in a closed state.

Below is the list after I have opened the lunch menu and clicked on 'Potato Chips' and indicating a Quantity of 1. As you can see the 'Potato' itemtext has now been changed to reflect the Qty of 1.

The strange part happens now. if I click on 'Lunch' and close the list and then click on it again re-opening it, the 'Qty X 1' text has jumped to another item (Milk)

Each time I open and close the list it jumps back and forth between the two items. Also if I open up other items, such as breakfast, I find that they too have now gotten items with 'Qty X 1' even though I havent clicked them.

The bits of code that are relevant are as such:

The XML for a child element:

CODE:................

The code thats triggered on clicking a child element:

CODE:..................

The above code opens a dialog, accepts a value for quantity, appends the list element to reflect this, also saves to database and sets a textview with the selected item and quantity.

Android :: Best Way To Implement An Activity That Lists Recipes

Feb 15, 2010

I'm working on my first Android app, and would appreciate any guidance to make sure I'm doing this the best way. Basically I want an Activity to list recipes. Eventually I'll have another Activity to display an individual recipe selected from the list, but I'm not worrying about that yet.

The list of recipes should show each recipe's title, description, rating, and date added. For each recipe in the list I'd like the title on the top left of the list entry, rating on the top right, description on the bottom left, and date added on the bottom right. I may want to add photo, icons representing properties of the recipe (e.g. vegetarian), etc. The makes me think that each item in the list should be a TableLayout.

With all that in mind, here's what I'm planning to write:

1. Write class RecipesDataAdapter extends BaseAdapter. Override the getView() method to return an instance of TableLayout. Populate each instance of TableLayout with two TableRows, the first row containing cells for title and rating, and the second row containing cells for description and date added. For now I'll just pass the Recipe instances to the adapter in an array.

2. Write class ListRecipesActivity that extends ListActivity. Override the onCreate() method to obtain instances of the Recipe class and call the setListAdapter() method with an instance of the RecipesDataAdapter class.

Notice that all this is done in code without any layout XML files. All the examples of Activities that I've seen use a layout XML file and call setContentView(R.layout.layout_name) but I'm not sure if I need to do that for this, or even how I would do that considering my main Activity is a list of non-trivial things (TableLayout).

Android :: Way To Call Other Activities In An Activity?

May 8, 2010

Say I have 2 activities (ActivityOne and ActivityTwo). How would I call ActivityTwo from ActivityOne? Then how would I return to ActivityOne from ActivityTwo? For example, I have a listview with all the contacts on the host phone. When I tap on a contact, another activity shows information and allows editing of that contact. Then I could hit the back button, and I would go back to the exact state that ActivityOne was in before I called ActivityTwo. I was thinking an Intent object, but I am not sure. Could someone post some code?

Android :: Orientation Change Crash In Tab Activity With List Activity

Jan 21, 2010

When views with different type have same id and screen orientation changes,

either java.lang.ClassCastException: android.view.AbsSavedState$1 or java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Wrong state class -- expecting View State will occur. (depends on the view's order)

Because View.dispatchRestoreInstanceState() checks id only.

You may wonder why anyone would make views with different type to have same id.

But it can happen when you use tab activity.

Imagine you have tab activity with two children activity.

Tab1 is ListActivity and Tab2 is ExpandableListActivity.

Both activity have id of "@android:id/list" but the type of view is different.

This means we cannot use ListActivity & ExpandableListActivit at the same in one tab activity.

Android :: Can Update A List View In One Activity While Im In Another Activity

Oct 4, 2010

I currently have a tab layout with 2 tabs, one tab with a list view and one with the option make strings so I can add them in the list view. Both tabs have their own activity because this made the code much more structured, and I dont have to repeat my self later.

Lets say im in the tab that offer me to create an string, and i press the update list button, how do I update the list view without startActivity()? If i use startActivity(), it starts List.java, and instead of displaying the list in the list view tab, it takes full screen, which defies the purpose of the tab view. In other words, the startActivity() steals the focus from the tab view of the list, and sends it fulscreen.

I want to update the activity in my list view tab, without starting a new activity that goes to fullscreen, and doesnt update the one in the tab.
