Android :: Global Settings Variable For Application
Nov 3, 2010
Is there a way to have an global settings variable for an android application, which is accessable as well from any help java classes without giving them context?
I try to explain what I mean.
I have an application version as string value in strings.xml I can get its value from every android activity, but not from help java classes withought giving context What I do now, is saving it in a static variable of my first activity, but it seems, that sometimes it will be erased and set to null.

I want to create a global variable store for a list of user defined objects. I have a LinkedList of Feed (a user defined object) that I need to be made available to a new Activity that is created. This list is displayed using a ListView and so when an item of the ListView is clicked, I need the correct Feed index to be 'passed' to the new Activity. I have no problem doing this as I create an Intent and then pass the id of the selected row. I need the new Activity to have access to the LinkedList of Feed objects.
There are different ways to do this (explained here - http://code.google.com/android/kb/framework.html). I want to use the option (quoted from link above): The android.app.Application class The android.app.Application is a base class for those who need to maintain global application state. It can be accessed via getApplication() from any Activity or Service. It has a couple of life- cycle methods and will be instantiated by Android automatically if your register it in AndroidManifest.xml.
I want to use the above method as I could then fill the LinkedList at application start and then use it throughout without any duplicates etc. Does anyone know how the android.app.Application class can be used as a global variable store that can be accessed from other classes? I cannot find any more information on this method of passing information between Activities within a single application. Any information regarding passing user defined objects would be useful and specifically how to get the above idea to work.

I'd like to make a preference screen with a variable number of preferences, very much like the WiFi selector. A number of profiles should be clickable and possible to edit and in the bottom there should be an add profile button. Has anyone got any tips on how to accomplish this? All I've found is this: http://groups.google.com /group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa.

I know you can create shortcuts to the main Settings menus (battery use, bluetooth settings, etc.) by just long-pressing the screen -> Shortcuts, but I need to create a shortcut to a submenu (specifically Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Network Mode) This is on a Droid 2 Global. Anyone know how I can do this? I have LauncherPro and I know you can make shortcuts with it but programming those shortcuts seems pretty complicated. Also I know you can make additional shortcuts using the LauncherPro "Activities" menu but I can't find the "Network Mode" settings in that list either.

I'm UK based and I'm wondering how much of the world can see and download my apps from the market? For example, the Chinese market, which I believe is quite large, can they see UK or US based apps? Or does some kind of specific translation need to be done for this to happen? Or is it a separate market place?

Is copying the reference to the object and not the value of the object. Meaning, when I modify pos.top or pos.bottom, the original object gets modified. I'm guessing I am missing a concept of pass object by reference vs value here which I thought I understood. What is the fix here? Is it a problem with how I defined my custom class?

I currently have an app that has many activities and needs to have a way of maintaining state between these activities.
I use the Application class to do this, declaring my global variables and using getters and setters to interact with my activities.
I was hoping to place a few custom methods in there, so that when I want to do a common task like, for instance, display an error message, I can declare the method in my application class and call it from any activity that uses it
EscarApplication application = (EscarApplication) this.getApplication();
EscarApplication being the name of my application class above.
I have tried to include this method in my application class:
CODE:.....
In the hope that I can call this method from activity without having to redeclare it, but when I call it using something like below I get an null pointer exception:
Visit.this.application.showError("Update error", "An error has occurred while trying to communicate with the server");
Visit being the name of my current activity above.
Should this work, or can I only use getters and setters to change global vars in an Application Class.
EDIT Stack Trace:
CODE:...............
The dialog is declared as such in the application class:AlertDialog alertDialog;
Created in that same class:alertDialog = new AlertDialog.Builder(this).create();
And the method to call it in that class is as follows:
CODE:.............
And finally, it is called from an activity like so:
CODE:........................

Just downloaded donut sdk and played with global search, very cool, except a small issue. I integrate my application with global search functionality, but global search always shows "More results... xxx (n) " even if there is only 1 result from my application. I've disabled all other applications so that there is enough room for displaying the results of my application for sure. Any hint when it shows result directly and when it shows "More results..."?

I want to create an app widget that could take up a different number of "cells" on the home screen, but I don't think that the app widget framework easily supports this. I know that an app widget can have a configuration screen, and I'd like the user to be able select a sort of small, medium, or large size for the widget as part of my configuration activity. Unfortunately, I don't think that this is possible, correct? Based on the minWidth and minHeight properties, the Launcher app will assign a number of cells that I can't configure at run time.
For instance, if I want a weather widget that has a current, hourly and weekly format that take up 1, 2, and 4 cells respectively, I can't do this at run time. Instead, I believe my only option is to export 3 different widgets and have them all listed in the widget picker dialog as something like "Weather - current conditions", "Weather - hourly forcast", and "Weather - week long forcast".

I'm trying to do a simple global exception handler in my Android app and I am having troubles:
public class TicTacToe extends Activity {
/** Called when the activity is first created. */
@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
Thread.currentThread().setUncaughtExceptionHandler(new UncaughtExceptionHandler() {
@Override
public void uncaughtException(Thread thread, Throwable ex) {
Toast.makeText(this, "TOAST", Toast.LENGTH_LONG);
} } );
setContentView(R.layout.main);
} }
I'm a rather new with both Android and Java but in .NET that would work. Can't I access local variable from anonymous methods in Java? If so, how should I rewrite it?

Great app! You can set almost everything from this one app. Ringer, media, notifications volume. Screen brightness. Toggle WiFi and GPS, check battery strength, turn on LED or screen for flashlight. etc. Remove those butt-ugly toggles from your screen

Whilst browsing in here and on the web for ways to save battery life, I came across an app for turning on and off WiFi, backlight, bluetooth etc. It had a totally different layout to Quick Settings. The screen appeared to have about 12 square buttons, for quick on/off functionality of the usual stuff. WiFi, bluetooth etc. One of the buttons near the bottom right corner was 2G/3G. Does anyone know which app this may be, from my super description? I like the simple one screen does all layout, which was easy to understand. Can't remember if it was from a link in here, or from another site.

I was trying to do it with Shared Preferences but am not sure if this is the best solution. I would appreciate any suggestion on how to store user values/settings in Android application.

when you got your phone set up JUST perfect, then blam-o something happens and you have to do a factory wipe of your phone, eliminating all your perfectly placed settings. wouldn't it be nice if there was an app that you could run to STORE all your settings, on your sd card, then if/when you have to do a wipe, OR get a new phone (of the same model) you can run this app and bingo bango, all your settings are just how they were before?

Now I have 2 activities that would simultaneously access one data/ settings. However, two kind of solution can be applied after I study from the Android Developer's Guild.One is ContentProvider, The discription in guild is as: "Content providers store and retrieve data and make it accessible to all applications. They're the only way to share data across applications; there's no common storage area that all Android packages can access."and another is SharedPreferences, "To use preferences that are shared across multiple application components (activities, receivers, services, providers), you can use the underlying Context.getSharedPreferences() method to retrieve a preferences object stored under a specific name."
