Android :: Change Object Positions In Layout?
Jun 7, 2010
I'm currently working on a very simple aplication, and I intended to make it change the visual aspect depending on the screen size. The application just has 6 buttons like this:
I'm using the AbsoluteLayout, and changing the x and y of the buttons with the methods offsetLeftAndRight and offsetTopAndBottom. I'm not changing the layout of the buttons in the xml file, so the all start in the same place.
However, if I use this methods inside the onClickMethod they sometimes appear where I want them, sometimes don't (can't figure out why), but if i use them in the onCreate method, nothing happens.

I need to implement a screen containing a list of blocks one below the other. Each block will contain mutiple superimpose elements (Images, text) for which the relative position needs to be specified with respect to the top left corner of the block.
For creating the list of blocks i have used listview. For each block i tried to use relative layout. This works ok when the phone is in landscape mode and absolute position is specified relative to left edge of the phone. But when the phone is put in the portrait mode the layout gets distorted.
1) What layout can be used for this scenario?
2) Can relative positions be specified in terms of percentage of screen width/height instead of pixels?

I've been trying to figure out how to make some sense of a dumped XML layout, and it's progressing 'pretty good'. The only thing I'm currently unsure about is the following:
When I use the command:
aapt dump xmltree <pathofapk> <pathofxmlfile>
I get the following result:
CODE:.............
That's all good, but what I'm trying to figure out is how to convert the following code into the XML layout file:
CODE:.................
Converting those values to decimal would result in:
CODE:.................
All good, but I've been trying to figure out what the (type 0x5 means). With all other types, the result is defined in the Android.util.TypedValue.class file
Decompiling that, gives the following result for 0x5:
CODE:...............
Makes sense, in a way. But, I need to know what kind of value it is, so looking down, I find the following value:
CODE:.............
But, when I try to use 2561mm and 1025mm (It's a tad much anyway, 25cm is.. larger than my screen), The whole screen is filled with the 'parent LinearLayout'.

I have a set of custom views that I would like to add to a LinearLayout object. However, the first object I add to the layout (I do this dynamically, during runtime) has a OnMeasure method that tries to get as much space as possible resulting in that it get's all the space LinearLayout object. This is correct behavior, but when I then add more objects following that I want the allocated area for the first object to decrease so the others will fit. As it is now, each following object will get zero space, and hence won't be visible.

I need to create a map with items on it (the map consists of a drawable object, which represents a room) and I thought about using buttons with background images for the items so that they are clickable.
I guess the AbsoluteLayout fits here the best, but unfortunately it's deprecated. What layout would you recommend me for this kind of application ? Is there another layout which supports X/Y coordinates ?

I have the following linear layout. What I don't understand is if I set the background to another image, the padding information are reset. Is there a way to prevent this?
<LinearLayout android:id="@+id/aPanel"
android:orientation="horizontal" android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:background="@drawable/bkground"
android:paddingLeft="15dp" android:paddingRight="15dp">
<!-- some children here -->
</LinearLayout>
I see the position of the children get shifted when I change the backround drawable of the linearlayout 'aPanel'.

I'm trying to modify the default layout for the MediaController. I'd like to remove the fastForward/fastRewind buttons and maybe do some resizing, etc. I know it's possible to remove the buttons if I call the MediaController(Context, useFastForward) constructor, but is there any other way to change the layout of the controller?

I want the ability to re-arrange Views in a LinearLayout, without specifying specific pixel locations, at runtime. for my proof of concept, I have a layout with 2 TextViews, one red, and one black. The red TextView is on the left. I want onClick to set it to be on the right, without adjusting margins, as if I'd re-written the XML of the layout, with the red TextView second.

is there a way to have a view use a different layout when an orientation change occurs. suppose i want the view to look one way in portrait and another way in landscape. all the same data, but arranged differently.I'm thinking one way to do this would be to have two different linear layouts with android:visibility="gone" and simply display the appropriate one (set android:visibility="visible") based on orientation -- i.e. do this from code.is there a way to do this in xml? or something like this (i.e. in landscape, put the textview here, in portrait, put it here instead)?

My question today relates to the android home screen and where it stores icon / widget positions. Specifically, I am interested in accessing the positions and sizes of any icons that are currently being displayed. I have, so far, been unable to find a method of retrieving the positions of other applications but i figure it must be possible in some way due to the presence of third-party home screen applications. Ideally, I am hoping to query the positions of whatever is on the screen at the moment from a live wallpaper and adjust my rendering accordingly.

I have a layout which contains a TextView.
The content of the TextView might change on runtime. (discussed on a different issue here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3683727/layout-with-dynamic-position )
I can position the layout by drag&drop. If the size of the layout doesn't change, the position stays, but as soon as the size of the layout changes (because more text inside the TextView) the position is reseted.
I use the layout(left, top, right, bottom) to position the layout.
Now I don't know where I should add my layout() call to make sure it stays at the right position...
Here is my class
CODE:............
