Android :: Browse Deeper Into /data/package/application
Apr 17, 2009
My app is creating a directory by using File thisDir = getDir("mycustomname", Context.MODE_WORLD_WRITEABLE); It is stored at /data/data/package/app_mycustomname/. I can browse that directory with DDMS or with 'adb shell', of course, it is empty. My App then creates some subdirectories there, and those have subdirectories too, and so on, and creates files in several of those. My app can read all those dirs and files, too. Sometimes I have to take a look at this directory tree, but I cannot browse deep into that tree, neither using DDMS (both inside Eclipse and standalone) nor using the shell. I can see that there is a directory called / data / data / package / app_mycustomname / mysubdirectory and I can even 'cd' into this directory. But when I do a 'ls' there, the directory is reported to be empty, though I'm sure there must be something inside. app_mycoustomname has the permissions drwxrwx-wx app_mycoustomname/mysubdirectory has the permissions drwxrwxrwx. I have the same issue on the emulator and on the ADP1, both running a 1.1 firmware.

Is there a way for an Android user to browse the SQLite databases on his/her phone and view the data in the databases?
I use the SoftTrace beta program a lot. It's great but has no way that I can find to download the data it tracks to a PC.

Basically I want to know how to get a list or array or any type of data about the files that have been stored in an package specific data section. By this I mean that after using something like:
FileOutputStream fOut = c.openFileOutput(fileName, 0); OutputStreamWriter osw = new OutputStreamWriter(fOut);
How can I get a list of the files saved to the data location of my application where this file and other files or saved so that I can choose which file I wish to read or edit. I've searched and searched for this but have not found anything of use any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'm making an Android Java app game (although this question applies to all languages really) and hope to release the first version soon. I'm nervous about how I save data in my game. My problem is that, if in a later update, I decide to store more data or store the same data in a different way, I need to be careful I don't lose or corrupt data for users that upgrade (i.e. I want users to be able to use data created by an old version in the new version, like their high scores from before).For example, say I want to save high scores in version 1.

I'm working on the upgrade process for an Android app and am having a hard time ensuring a graceful shutdown of the old version. Can someone explain how the old version of the app is killed and if there is anything we can do to hook into the process? In more detail:
We notice that a new version of our app is available and launch a new activity with Intent.ACTION_VIEW pointing to the new apk file (or to the marketplace, once our app is there). However, the user has 2 chances to abort the install (once at the warning about reinstalling the app, and the second when warned about the permissions our app needs). My understanding is that I can't use startActivityForResult() with ACTION_VIEW, so I can't find out if the Action is aborted or not. So we can't tell if/when the install has been started.
We'd like to ensure that our app shuts down cleanly since we use a lot of native code and threads. We could kill our app proactively, as soon as we launch the ACTION_VIEW activity, but then we're left in a bad state if the user aborts. We could wait for the installer to remove our files, prior to installing the new version, but that's a hack. Is there any clean way to do this? Our main window is never seeing an onDestroy(), btw.

I have developed an application which has several packages within it's project. A class in one of those packages is called right away in the first line of code, which throws the dreaded java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError error. I don't get it, the package simply is within the project, and it works fine on my Android 1.6 device, but won't work with my 1.5 device. I do have to say that the project was originally set for 1.6, but then I changed the within the manifest from 4 to 3. Is that bad practice? Or maybe it has nothing to do with the platform version? Also I do get these lines as wel from the DDMS :
05-04 17:24:59.921: WARN/dalvikvm(2041): VFY: unable to resolve static field 2 (MANUFACTURER) in Landroid/os/Build;

We had a shock at work yesterday when our Orange bill arrived charging me 826.00 for the 1032mb of data I used over my 500mb allowance in the first month of owning a Desire. At the moment we're negotiating with Orange about that, and they're even sending me something approaching an itemised data bill to look at, but in the future I want to get onto a truly unlimited data account to prevent this happening again. Early indications from Orange are that they only do 500mb bolt ons and no more (and it's very hard to actually confirm this on their not too informative website), meaning this issue could easily rear it's ugly head again. If this is the case then I have to consider going elsewhere. Even though we're only in the first month of the contract I'm prepared to completely downgrade my Orange account and keep it running for my wife or something, and to take out a new account with O2 on an unlimited data package (plus I'll have 2 Desires to play with). The only trouble is that in the past (but not in the last 2 or 3 years) I've heard some horror stories about O2's coverage in the West Midlands (I live near to Wolverhampton) and wondered if anybody has local knowledge and can advise whether this has changed in recently.

I'm looking for a way to calculate the size of an installed Android application/package. I can't find this information in neither ApplicationInfo nor PackageInfo objects. From the ApplicationInfo I can get the path for the data and the app itself. Data is a directory structure, but when attempting to read it recursivly I get a nullpointer. Is there any better way of doing it? Any sample code?

i work on custom Application Manager and try to get the disk usage of installed package. So PackageManager.getpackageSizeInfo was removed from SDK on 0.9->1.0 update android.content.pm. PackageStats(String pkgName)(cacheSize, codeSize, dataSize) returns always "0" Size of phys. file (java.io.File) in "/data/app" seems wrong/not completely. Has anybody any solution to get the total disc space used by an installed package?

to start with I've gone through the entire notepad tutorial, I'm a professional game programmer who has some extra time. (though most of my time has been in C++, I did take a year or two of Java classes in college, and remember some of it). I'm not sure the site is a good site to ask questions like this.. If someone has a Forum that might be a good place to ask these newbie questions, please feel free to point me in the direction. I've examined a few of the samples, and think I've a grasp of what I want to do. I've a three to four project plan for some Android releases to sharpen my skills, but since this is my first project and I have never really developed for a mobile phone or the android before, I'd like to make sure I have a solid plan.The first project is an example of the license plate game, however I want to do a few things to change it. Heck maybe when I'm done it'll become a bingo style game, with bluetooth connectivity, you never know. The base idea is I want to offer a list of states, with checkboxes next to them. so to do this, I'll be starting with a Linear List layout similar to the note pad example, and then have a row that is only a Checkbox. I can use text and call strike through if it's been checked off. Perhaps offer an option to not show them if they are checked.
But I want the list to be generated from a set of lists. Maybe all of America's states, maybe reasonable American states (no Hawaii, no Alaska) maybe a North American list, (add in Mexico and some Canadian provinces), a European list, who knows. I'd probably have to have a pop up window that lists all of the lists I suppose using a radiogroup of some sort. So then as far as the data, after weighing options I think best solution is to make a database with two fields, "checked" and "name".I figure I can use the menu for most of the user interaction (aside from clicking on stuff we want to check off) with maybe a few context menu items, I understand how to make all of those already so I should be good. The question I have is what is the best way to populate the lists? Should I create raw data, and have different files for all the lists? Or is there some other way to do this? I've seen this done on the searchable dictionary, but I'd like to hear what people who have actually generated the data like this before. In addition is there an easy way to look at the sql database these applications create, or do you have to run searches on them and output the data? Finally any other suggestion or advice? I definitely want to try to get something like this on the market so I can see the full life cycle and see if anyone actually likes it. (luckily there's not a plethora of them already) but I also want a few people to look over my code if they're willing when I'm done to make sure I've done this right or at least not missing any basic mistakes.

I'm attempting to override an Android View class to tweak the functionality just slightly. But I need to modify a field that does not have a setter method. I've placed the subclass in a package called android.widget. Why can't I access any of the package-private member fields? I notice that the compiler says they "cannot be resolved," rather than not being accessible. Does this have something to do with how Android.jar is built?
