Android :: Best Way To Implement List Of Special UI Elements
Oct 16, 2010
I need an advice. What is the best way to implement in android a list of such UI elements (see the ref)A list contains a lot of such elements (about 30-40). I'm using now relative layout and 4 text fields and I think it isn't a good way.I think it's too heavy (full list will contain: 30 relative layouts and 30*5 = 150 text fields).

When I have a ListActivity and an Adapter how does Android handle a list with 200 elements.
Does it try to load all of them directly how does it wait till the user scrolls and then renders those elements?
Do I have to worry with performance when a list is too long?

I have a ListView with an adapter extending BaseAdapter.I create a view (from a LinearLayout and I put some items ont it depending on some parameters. I have a textview, with a drawable and sometime another textview next to the drawable in this horizontal linearlayout. For some reason, this command doesn't seems to work. So when my textview doesn't fill the full width of the list, I can only click on the part of the elements with the widget on it. I have try playing a lot with the layout and I can't get this to work. The parameters seems to be ignore all together. Only hack that would work I found was to set a big minimum width on my linearlayout but I don't think that's the best solution.

I've a ListView where every element in the list contains a TextView and two different Buttons.I found a solution as described in my answer below. Now I can click/tap the button via the touch screen. However, I can't manually select it with the trackball. It always selects the whole list item and from there goes directly to the next list item ignoring the buttons, even though I set .setFocusable(true) and setClickable (true) for the buttons in getView().This causes that no list item is selectable at all any more. But it didn't help in making the nested buttons selectable.

is what my adapter looks like at the moment, I have very little experience in customising adapters so I do not know where to start.

I am rendering a ListView inside a dialog. The ListView elements are very simple TextView objects. The problem: whatever I do, they never take the full width in the list view, which has the side effect that the list view selector only covers the actual text, not the whole list entry (i.o.w., if the text of the entry is much smaller than the width of the listview/dialog, then only a tiny portion of the list element is highlighted when focusing it).

I want to set the background of a Relative or LinearLayout to a custom drawable. I want the shape to draw two horizontal lines across the bottom, leaving the central part transparent (empty). The following draws the horizontal lines centered vertically, where as i need them to be aligned to the bottom of the shape. (If you add a rectangle as an item you can see the shape expands to the dimenstions of the parent, but the lines are still centrally aligned). Code...

I have an Android app where users can add items to a ListView, and I'd like them to be able to re-order the items in the list however they want (as opposed to just offering them different sort orders). It's easy enough to add a position setting for the items (they come from the DB) but what kind of UI elements are available for the user to indicate the desired ordering? Is there a pattern anyone has seen implemented for this? I have not seen anything on Android that does anything like this, except the home screen which is similar but looks a little bit beyond my expertise at this point. The best I can think of is to use a long click and context menu to "move up" or "move down". Any better ideas?

I want to build a list that show the directory tree like list similar to folders view on the left pane in 'Windows Explorer'. I have seen ExpandableList but this goes into 2 levels only. I want to go into multiple levels. Expand the item by clicking on the left icon and show sub directories in it. Click on sub directory expand icon, show the sub-sub diretories in it and so on.

I want to display the same options menu on all of my application's activities. I created a generic Activity that implements the menu, and all my further activies extend it. The problem: when I need to extend other specific activities, like ListActivity and MapActivity, I can't figure out how to extend the generic activity and add the List or Map behaviour to the new class. To deal with the issue I had to create three different generic activities, each extending Activity, ListActivity and MapActivity.I've tried creating an abstract activity but it doesn't work, I would need to extend two classes at the same time. I could try interfaces but since I can't implement methods, I would have to paste the menu implementation all over the second-level classes, right?

I don't know exactly how to explain this problem, but I'll try. I have a ListView with several items. Each item has inside a TextView and two ImageView. I want the ImageView change when I click on them, and I want to open a context menu when I press for a long time into the ListView item. For the ImageView, everything works properly. For the whole item, I can show the context menu after a long press, but my problem is that the ImageView changes as well when I am pressing the TextView, for example.I hope you understand my problem. I think that all the children of a view are affected by an event in the parent, but I am not sure.

I have a list with some Belgian cities with accentued ( is that the right english word?) characters: (Liège,Quiévrain,Franière, etc.) and I would like to transform these special characters to compare with a list containing the same names in upper case, but without these characters ( LIEGE, QUIEVRAIN, FRANIERE) What i first tried to do was to use the upper case: LIEGE.contentEqual(Liège.toUpperCase()) but that doesn't fit because the Upper case of Liège is LIÉGE and not LIEGE. I have some complicated ideas like replacing each characters, but that sound stupid and a long process.

I have a ListView, and I want to do something special with the first item in the listview.
So, I setup an adapter, an item in separate xml a java wrapper for the item and I have a "render()" method.
Inside my render method, I realized that I can't do something like "findViewById(R.id.test)" because all the items in the listview have the same id. How can I get just the first item?

I see that as of API Level 8, you can request a handle to special directories with Environment.getExternalStoragePublicDirectory. This takes a type such as DIRECTORY_MUSIC, DIRECTORY_PICTURES, etc.
I'm looking for an equivalent directory for other media types such as documents (Word docs, PDFs, etc.). My HTC Desire has a "/sdcard/My Documents/" folder which looks like exactly what I want, but it has no DIRECTORY_ specifier for use with the above method. Is this a standard Android directory which I can rely on?
If I can't use getExternalStoragePublicDirectory, I have to use getExternalStorageDirectory instead which just points me to the root of the SD card. I can explicitly check for the presence of "My Documents" under the root and use it if it's there.
This is what I have:
CODE:..........
Is there a better way?

I do not have a device. I am testing on the emulator. When I send a message(problematically and through the device) with special characters I am not able to view them properly. For Example: When I send a message from one emulator to another say "~Ha". I see only the character "~" in the other emulator.
But when I send the same message from the DDMS, I do not see the problem. Is this a problem with the emulator or am i missing somthing. sm.sendTextMessage("5556", null, "~Ha", null, null);

I'm a college student, and there's daily specials at bars, salsa dance nights, special meetings, lectures, etc. And all these things happen around me. I don't want to just put them into my calendar and have them flooding it, but I would like some app to hold such things. Anyone know what I can use that isn't my default so I can retain my personal schedule and, if I want to do extra, can see this app's contents?

I've developed an appWidget by inheriting AppWidgetProvider and adding it to the manifest as a receiver with the appwidget-metatag. Works fine. Two questions though: 1. It seems that the only reason to add APPWIDGET_UPDATE to the intentfilter of the receiver is to let the widgetpicker recognize it as an appwidget? The intents (update/enable/disable) it received no matter if they are included in the intentfilter or not. How come? 2. When adding a permission to the receiver to disable spoofed intents, I actually expected the APPWIDGET_XXX intents not to be received since they are(?) sent from a sender without the permission. Not so, they arrived just as before. How is this possible? Do these intents get some special treatment by the system?
