Android :: Sending Messages With Special Characters
Feb 13, 2009
I do not have a device. I am testing on the emulator. When I send a message(problematically and through the device) with special characters I am not able to view them properly. For Example: When I send a message from one emulator to another say "~Ha". I see only the character "~" in the other emulator.
But when I send the same message from the DDMS, I do not see the problem. Is this a problem with the emulator or am i missing somthing. sm.sendTextMessage("5556", null, "~Ha", null, null);

I have a list with some Belgian cities with accentued ( is that the right english word?) characters: (Liège,Quiévrain,Franière, etc.) and I would like to transform these special characters to compare with a list containing the same names in upper case, but without these characters ( LIEGE, QUIEVRAIN, FRANIERE) What i first tried to do was to use the upper case: LIEGE.contentEqual(Liège.toUpperCase()) but that doesn't fit because the Upper case of Liège is LIÉGE and not LIEGE. I have some complicated ideas like replacing each characters, but that sound stupid and a long process.

I am trying to update a SQLite table in my Android application. Predicate for this update is built around a column which stores different resource URLs.These URLs might contain special characters such as /~?=; (and even &).The update query doesnt work; it does not identify the column satifying the condition. How can I escape these characters?

Specifically music notes.
its not a horrible ordeal, just a very minor annoyance, HOWEVER
im curious as to whether or not theres some type of character set or language package i can apply that will show these types of characters.
example:
INCREDIBLE BROWSER
DESKTOP BROWSER
any ideas? p.s calling the phone a "DInc" is the stupidest thing on the planet.

I am going to import the Droid/Milestone from UK to Denmark, but need to know if it is possible to type special characters like ï, ï and ï from the hardware keyboard and/or the softkeyboard. And does anyone know if it is possible to install a danish dictionary?

I type a lot on my Milestone, and I'm really loving the keyboard. Though in Norwegian, we use "" "" and "" a lot and typing in Norwegian isn't that great. Quite a few common words use those letters frequently, and having to longpress A or O and then tap the screen isn't really practical..
Does anyone know if it could be possible to make another solution? Either double tap (aaeeoo) or longpress brings the letters directly.

When writing using the keyboard I can not seem to find the way to insert special characters none are available when I click symbol key.
My dictionary is in spanish, but the phone main language is set to english; is this the problem?
If so, it should not be. Messaging should use dictionary and not phone language.
also, is there really a need for limiting character counts when using special characters? (YuS it needs more info, but doesn't the Standard for character representation take care of this)

Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I could send special characters (i.e: , , , , , ect) in text messages. Then, it wouldn't anymore. I believe my phone updated to Jelly Bean before it stopped, so it may be connected to that. When I try to send a message with any type of special character in it, the message simply won't send. No matter if I use the messenger than came on the phone, or the one I installed (Handcent). I still get the message just not sending. It'll send once I take the characters out of the message, though. I can normally receive messages containing special characters, but they sometimes it shows up as squares.
Mostly, I want to know if I can fix it. I understand that it may be the update, which I'll have to wait out. Or that it could be the phone itself, which in that case I'd just have to wait till I can upgrade again. It's just very annoying not being able to send accents or special characters. Especially to my Spanish only speaking friends.

Is there any way to remove foreign characters just before sending a SMS? I know that some keyboards can do that, but I'm looking for something universal. I want to delete them, because when I use them, one SMS can contain only 70 characters instead of 160.

So my girlfriend is having an issue with her phone. I don't see it being an issue with mine but it might be something else. She is receiving non-alpha numeric characters in her text messages. So far shes gotten it from me and one of her other friends not knowing what to say she called it "caligraphy". Anyways, I am on Metro and her friend is on Verizon. I'd figure its a CDMA issue but she is on a Samsung Moment on Sprint which is also CDMA so idunno.
To me they send fine, but to her some of the texts she receives come in all garbled. Not sure whats going on, anyone got any ideas? Her phone is unrooted, stock, and like a week and a half ago had a factory reset done. Its 2.1 android. In this screenshot I asked her to forward me the "jibberish." She had tried to do it several times earlier but i never got the messages, this time i got it so heres a screenie for you all.

I don't know if anyone else tried/got this message but I have the stock messaging app and accidentally sent over the 160 character limit and instead of getting the verizon message that says it only sends the first 160 characters to non-verizon customers. I got a message that read "messages sent to non-verizon customers over 160 characters are sent as plain text in multiple segments". Looks like verizon is now splitting text messages for us. Just thought I would pass this along to everyone. Only problem I have seen so far is every time you go over the 160 limit verizon sends you that message every single time kinda gets annoying.

I have a Droid with Android 2.1. I am on a CDMA network. I send messages to some people on a GSM and when we use non-ascii characters, like ± or ¡ or Japanese and such, over sms, the other end gets them as question marks . I don't know anybody on a CDMA network so I can not test if the problem would be there too. I don't know if it is a problem between the networks or something wrong with my phone or what. Finding information in google has proven unsuccessful. Though I found some text naming it a 'common' problem.

So im looking at my messages and i get a long one. After like 100 characters or something it cuts it off and replaces it with ... And then i have to click on it to see the rest. Is there any way to take this off in the settings?
And my second question, my phone doesnt connect to my computer right. I plugged it in, it said it didnt have the right software or something, so i went and downloaded the the Vista 64 bit thing thats stickied on here. I plug it in, and the "you have the wrong software" thing was gone, but nothing else happpened. The screen says its connected and it vibrates and i hear the noise thru the computer, so what am i doing wrong. I read somewhere that you pull down the little bar at the top and hit dock or something like that. I cant do that. If i can pull it down theres no buttons to hit. Can someone walk me thru this process? FIXED

I saw a thread for an app that allows you to send delayed text messages, deliver in x number of hours, but can't recall the name. I've tried searching but haven't had any luck.

I've got an app that lets users send sms messages. Works great when the message < 160 characters. After that, things work less-perfectly. Seems like there are a few options here:
Manually break the message up into multiple SMSs, send each part as a separate SMS. Use the multi-part send SMS function (sendMultipartTextMessage()). Send the message as an MMS message (sendDataMessage()?).
Here's my novice take on it:
1)most well supported across carriers. Users may get mad that you just cost them N separate messages though, instead of converting to MMS or something.
2)not sure if this is supported by different carriers, and read that once the message is greater than 3 * 160 chars in length, gets converted to MMS anyway by different SMS apps - maybe stay away from this altogether.
3)not sure how to do this, and older phones might not support MMS. To send an MMS using the android SDK, do we just use the SmsManager.sendDataMessage() method?

I have G1. I write python scripts using ASE. I have to send around 1000 SMSes using SMS API in ASE. I wonder if G1 will be able to hold up-to that? moreover, how much pause (time gap/ sleep) should I give between each message sent. Some of my colleges think that its a crazy idea. I should go for GSM modem. What do you think, is this feasible enough? Can G1 enough capable? I dont have dev version.

What class can we use to send a text message? I tried this on the emulator, 2.0:
CODE:.............
And that works ok. On my G1 running 1.5, I get a verify error, guessing because SmsManager is not available in 1.5. Maybe for 1.5 we need to use the deprecated class?:
android.telephony.gsm.SmsManager
Is that correct, or is there some other class we're supposed to use for sending text messages?

I have an Android Service which copies files to an ftp server.
While it is doing that, I want to send feedback to my Activity so the user knows what happens.
I tried implementing it using the RemoteMessengerServiceSample code, but I have a problem ... All messages I send during the ftp transfer arrive at my Activity the moment the copy operation is finished ... not message by message while the copy job runs as I would like.
Is there any way to fix this? Maybe i'm using the wrong method for sending messages to my activity?

Is there already functionality similar to the push registry or wireless messaging API in J2ME implemented in Android? Or at least plans to do so?I have been looking at this issue for a while, because in a corporate environment it is essential to be able to push information out, or trigger actions via SMS or other connections.I have successfully sent an SMS between emulator instances, and successfully received an SMS by using a BroadcastReceiver on another emulator instance. I have also been able to use SmsManager. sendDataMessage to send a data message to a port on another emulator instance, but in this case the BroadcastReceiver is never triggered. This seems to be the closest the API's get to what I'm looking for.

I did a search on this and didn't come up with any hits for the inc.If I want to send a long message (over 160 characters) I use to be able to send as mms on my bb and it would not break the message up into seperate messages like it did on regular sms.How do I do this on the Inc? I looked for a mms option when texting and didn't find one. I am using Handcent and shapewriter for a keyboard, but also looked on the stock messaging app and didn't see one there either.
