Android :: Back-end Choices For Mobile Application
Nov 20, 2010
As a part of our CS grad project, we are developing an android application that receives push recommendations from our server based on geolocation logic & social-networking APIs.Our java code shall also interact with the Facebook API to start with and some Map APIs.(All this sounds scary as of now!)Could you please comment/differ on our choices? We would love to give back to the community as we learn ahead.

I want to do something like this: user clicks on a button "Choose color", and a simple popup with e.g. 5 colors appears. I could do this with PopupWindow and inner ListView, but is there a simpler solution, like a specific widget for this?

When I go to the gallery and select a photo and hit the share button, I get a bunch of choices that I never use and probably never will. I have to scroll all the way to the bottom to get to the twitdroid. Does anyone know how to remove the "share" selections like peep, or picasa, or facebook. If you know a setting that I seem to be missing, please share.

I have a question regarding a feature that just seemed to disappear from Handcent SMS.
Before, when I composed a message in the app or using quick compose (long press search button), there would be a drop down list of possible choices when I began typing in the "To:" field. For example, if I typed "k", it would show names beginning with "k". But now the feature is gone and it really sucks when I want to compose a text.
Does anyone else have this issue? Is it Handcent's problem or a software problem (v2.1 bug?), and does anyone know how to fix it?

I've noticed that my mobile data is turning off by itself. Initially I thought it was JuiceDefender throwing a wobbly, but then I noticed that its event log was full of comments like "Mobile data is back under JD control" and something about reloading a profile. By watching the notification in the drop down menu I noticed that it was perpetually restarting itself.
I uninstalled it, and tried another app called 2x Battery and the same thing was happening. The data toggle in the setting menu of MIUI was greyed out to show data had been turned off, and 2x Battery stated that data had been toggled by the user.
It seems to be that a third party app is deactivating mobile data. Is there any app out there that can log when an app deactivates data, so I can find out the culprit?

Was talking with the T-mobile tech support rep (after learning the Vibrant does not support UMA to use wifi calling at home) and she told me about the upcoming back to school sale where many phones are free, and even better, adding an extra line is FREE till 2012. Not an extra $5/mo., free. Quite a few decent phones are available, too. Very cool, thought I'd give you guys a heads up. I might even get a phone just to for a back-up.

In order to conserve battery life, I am in the habit of turning off my mobile network whenever I'm not using it. At home, I have mobile network off, and wi-fi enabled. Over the past several days, I notice that when I try to toggle mobile network to on, it doesn't work. After going in to settings, for mobile network, it says Turning on... After restarting my phone, mobile network always turn on successfully.

Is there a program or something that will back up contacts like dashwire does for windows mobile? Basically on dashwire you would install it, it would sync and upload your contacts....then if you ever had to reset the phone, reinstall the program and all your contacts are downloaded to your phone.

I need to make a web application for mobile phones so that I can transfer balance from a 'recharge sim' (SIM card used to send balance to other mobile SIMs) located in whatever country to other 'non- recharge sims'. I can't find any resource - documentation, tutorial, forum discussion, programming language etc. Where should I start? What materials, etc, are out there? Is there any open-source project I could refer to? More precisely- which package and methods of which language should I use?

I tend to believe that developing mobile applications in an enterprise environment is best suited by developing intranet web applications. That said I have been asked to think about whether there are specific enterprise applications that could only be accomplished or would be more successful as native applications. I am curious as to what the Stack Overflow community thinks.

I am developing a few mobile apps for different platforms including Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Android and Symbian S60.I want my mobile apps to have the capability of checking for updates before starting and in case a new version is available, prompt the user to upgrade. Moreover in certain cases (like security patches), the user must be forced to update or the app won't work.Surely I can cook some code to achieve the task but I was wondering if there are already existing framework to serve the purpose so that I don't have to re-invent the wheel and test all over?

I normally frequent the Nexus One forum, but have had to crawl my way out from there to come ask the wider Android community a question.
I'm about to apply for a mobile application development role and was wondering if any of you guys knew an approximate number of Android users (or point me in the direction of somewhere that might have the info). I was about to write something along the lines of the Android market allowing developers to easily (hum, that's an opinion there! ) share their creations with <insert amount here> Android users around the world, but realized I had no idea.

I've talked to a lot of people recently who say they are expecting to stop writing native mobile apps and start writing web apps once HTML5 gets more fully baked in mobile OSs. I just finished my first HTML5 deep dive, and I'm not yet convinced.
Will HTML5 work as a replacement development platform for native apps, or are there certain things that require targeting the native runtime?
