Android :: Work With Large Bitmap - Rotating And Inserting To Gallery
Feb 19, 2010
I need to take a picture with the camera and, if depending on the picture size, rotate it before saving it into the gallery. I'm using
Intent imageCaptureIntent = new Intent(MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE);
imageCaptureIntent.putExtra(MediaStore.EXTRA_OUTPUT, uri);
startActivityForResult(imageCaptureIntent, IMAGE_CAPTURE);
To take the pic and save it to a temporary file. Then
Bitmap bmp = BitmapFactory.decodeFile(imagePath);
String str = android.provider.MediaStore.Images.Media.insertImage(cr, bmp, name, description);
To save it. This is the code i have tried to use to rotate the bitmap.............

I need to insert approximately one million rows of data (spread over 4 tables) - each row has one or two numeric fields, and two or three text fields (normally quite short). Single-column indexes on all the fields. After doing some tests on the emulator with a small test set, I extrapolated (assuming the last row will be inserted with a similar speed to the first row) my results to figure out that this would take about 15 hours (I have a Core 2 Duo running Vista). However, then I tried running the small test set on my Hero and I was surprised to see it run more than four times faster. I would guess it would take about 3 hours on the Hero. Alternatively, I could make the pre-populated database available as a download on the first run but this is likely to be a 120MB download. I have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help me with: 1. SQLite performance on the actual device being 4-5 times faster compared to the emulator - is this normal/expected? 2. Do the figures above generally sound fast/slow/normal (sorry this is so vague)? 3. From a user perspective - would it be best to provide a 120MB download or a 3 hour "first-time initialisation" step (plus 6MB download)?

I am trying to build an Android application which can take several photos taken by the camera, and merge them into one giant image. For example, I might take three photos and arrange them in a vertical stack for output as a single image. Ideally, I'd like to be able to keep the images at the original size. Unfortunately, using Bitmap.createBitmap() causes an OutOfMemoryException before even approaching the size of one photo of camera dimensions. Is this possible? Or do I just need to resort to scaling the photos before trying to merge them into a single Bitmap?

I'm developing an image editor for Android. When I do some operations with small pictures (600x600 - 1024x768), the program work well. But when I do some operations with big pictures, I always obtain an OutOfMemory Error. I read read many post trying to have the image in memory. Also I looked at the Android's Gallery, trying to simulate the effect of loading the image with lower quality and get the complete quality after a while. But I doesn't get to work with large images.
I thought of using the parameter inSampleSize but I raised the problem of having to perform operations on the image and save it with the original size, so it no longer serves me. The only thing I've done is use the parameter inJustDecodeBounds and display an error to the user if the image exceeds the available memory.
Is there any possibility of working with large images with no memory problems? I need urgent help.

When I take a picture with Android's camera app, it is inserted in the gallery with a name identical to it's creation date/time, like "2010-02-04 16.36.15.jpg". In my app I take my own pics, and insert to the gallery them using:
android.provider.MediaStore.Images.Media.insertImage(
ContentResolver cr, Bitmap source, String title, String description);
However, in the gallery they appear with a name that seems to be the time stamp of their creation in millis, like "1265323665851.jpg", no matter what I put in the tittle argument. I need them to have the same name they would get from Android's camera app, so that they will be properly ordered.

I've added an inserted in Gallery using android API as following:
Images.Media.insertImage(ctx.getContentResolver(),
"scard/test.jpg", "Hello", "description");
Actually the image that I passed its full path (scard/test.jpg) is already successfully inserted in the DB, but when you open the gallery you can't see it unless you switch off/on the device or Mount/Unmount the external memory. It there any way to refresh the gallery on demand?

I have a large bitmap (say 3888x2592) in a file. Now, I want to resize that bitmap to 800x533 and save it to another file.I normally would scale the bitmap by calling Bitmap.createBitmap method but it needs a source bitmap as the first argument, which I can't provide because loading the original image into a Bitmap object would of course exceed the memory (see here, for example).Is there a way to read a large image file with 10MP or more and save it to a new image file, resized to a specific new width and height, without getting an OutOfMemory exception?I also tried BitmapFactory.decodeFile(file, options) and setting the Options.outHeight and Options.outWidth values manually to 800 and 533, but it doesn't work that way.

I am simply trying to get the path of an image that the user selects and then convert it into a bitmap. The problem is, only some of the images in the gallery work when selected (by "work" I mean they are found to be a file that exists), while the others claim the file does not exist (even though the image is showing up in the gallery?). Even more strange is that this doesn't seem to be consistent, an image that was at one point considered to "exist" now claims to be nonexistent..............

I have a very large image and I only want to display a section the size of the display (no scaling), and the section should just be the center of the image. Because the image is very large I cannot read the entire image into memory and then crop it. This is what I have so far but it will give OutOfMemory for large images. Also I don't think inSampleSize applies because I want to crop the image, not lower the resolution.
Uri data = getIntent().getData();
Input Stream is = getContentResolver().openInputStream(data);
Bitmap bitmap = BitmapFactory.decodeStream(is, null, null);
Any help would be great?

I am 1) taking a picture and 2) then draw another Bitmap on top of it 3) then I store it
I am doing it as follows and it works on the emulator.
On the device I get a OutOfMemoryError: bitmap size exceeds VM budget android.graphics.Bitmap.nativeCopy(Native Method) android.graphics.Bitmap.copy(Bitmap.java:199) in the line copy the Bitmap to get a mutable Bitmap.
CODE:...........
What I am asking:
a) Is there a better way to do what I am doing? 1) take a picture 2) draw another Bitmap on top of it 3) then I store it
b) What is the best way to create a mutable Bitmap from the picture I just took with the camera?
In my app, resolution is not an issue. If it works better for small photos that would be fine.

I have two questions actually:
Is it better to draw an image on a bitmap or create a bitmap as resource and then draw it over a bitmap? Performance wise... which one is better?
If I want to draw something transparent over a bitmap, how would I go about doing it?
If I want to overlay one transparent bitmap over another, how would I do it?

I'm looking for a way to insert data into a cursor that is separate from the SQL database it retrieves the rest of the information from. Is there any way to to this, or is there a different way to add more information to a list view item? What I'm trying to do is to use a date column for each entry in the list to calculate the number of days until that date (and then put that number in the list item). I know how to get the value, but I just cant find a way to put it into the list without it being in the cursor.

My problem lies already in the first three lines. The contact does not seem to be stored. However, consecutive runs of this show, that the internal ID is increased nonetheless.
Is there something I am missing? Do you have to "commit" the changes?

How can i rotate a view and keep it like that. I have tried the Animation method discuss in the following discussion thread.
http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa...
this works fine for the animation, but it does not handle the key press events itself.my requirement is simple, I need to show a text on a button upside down. Somewhat as if the parent view is drawn landscape and button is portrait.

I'm trying to find a way to rotate a View, or (more conveniently) an entire layout, upside down and have it stay that way. I found the rotation and animation classes in the SDK, and these come close to what I want, but at the end of the animation I want my Layout to stay rotated; repeating the animation or just flipping back right- side-up doesn't help me with my app unfortunately.The only thing I can think of so far would be to find the source code for the rotate class, and override it such that the "...and then flip it back around to be right-side-up" code never happens. I'm not sure exactly where I'd find the original rotate code for reference if I were to do something that extensive however.I've found references online to the full android source - is that basically what I'd be looking at downloading to be able to attempt something like this? Am I missing a simple option on the rotation that would let it just stay put after I rotate it? Any help would be very much appreciated!
