Android :: What Is Best Unlockable GSM Phones?
Nov 12, 2010
My girlfriend is on Rogers with a Milestone. Both phones are great, but I am curious to know if there are better phones available and unlockable? The N1 is fantastic, but its painfully tiny storage space really kills the experience. Same goes for the Milestone. It would also be great to have a higher quality video capture and maybe even a front facing cam.So my question is, has anything recently launched that is the latest and greatest (and of course unlockable) or is anything coming out shortly.

Expanding on this thread that I posted a few days ago, I just want to cover all my bases. I am looking to buy an unlocked Hero so I can use it in Costa Rica by buying a SIM card. I am looking on eBay and the only ones that I see that are unlocked are ones that have the chin. Is this my only option? I don't really care one way or the other, I just want to make sure that these are the only ones that come unlocked/have a SIM.

what phones are available now on Verizon that come closest to the Nexus experience? I've been installing alternate ROMs since a week after I got my G1, and I'd never consider a phone that couldn't be completely unlocked. Out where I live, though, Verizon is the only option for decent service. Add to that the fact that I'm grandfathered in with unlimited data, and I won't be switching carriers anytime soon.

I'm looking at picking up a Moto CLIQ, with the primary intent of testing my own Android applications. The Android emulator doesn't quite cut it, as the app makes use of WiFi (which is not emulated). Not to mention that having an actual 1.5 device would probably be a very good idea to ensure a positive user experience on such devices.I'm basically wondering if it will work "normally" with an unregistered SIM card with WiFi turned on? I don't think I'd ever use this thing as a phone, except perhaps when traveling outside the US (hence the second question, can I unlock it and perhaps use prepaid sim cards from Euro carriers in it?

I'm as I'm deciding whether or not to get the iphone 4, and I'm wondering if any exciting Android phones will come to the AT&T 3G network. I'm planning on staying with AT&T as I'm grandfathered into the unlimited data plan and I do like their coverage and being able to use voice/data simultaneously.

I'm wanting to move over from symbian. Been a happy user for many years, but Nokia simply seems to be heading for a fall in all respects. This silly Ovi thing which will never take off, and the rapid decline of the quality and innovation of their handsets is the final nail in the coffin for me.However, I can't see any Android handsets that do it for me.While I think the operating system is miles better, there seems to be a massive drawback for Android phones - the imaging. There's not a single one with a decent camera - the hero and galaxy both have 5mp, but the images taken by them are nothing in comparison with all the Nokia generic 5mp CZ ones.So is there anything coming up that I would like? I noticed the Samsung behold 2, but that seems to be US only. Not to mention it might not be an better than the galaxy camera.I really don't want to go back to Nokia, but since I use my phone as my main camera, it has to be reasonably good. I know about the upcoming SE beast, but that's got a 4" screen, and I sold the i8910 because it was simply too big to comfortably operate.So.is there anything that could interest me? All I can see is the behold 2, and like I said, that seems to be US only (I'm UK).

I currently have the Nexus one but want something different like a qwerty sliding keyboard with similar screen size. I did a little search and the only thing that comes close to its screen size is the Motorola Droid? Droid looks outdate as I think its been out for awhile now, so my question is are there any new phones coming out with large screen with qwerty? Or any phone on the market now that is worth looking at? Must have larger screen

My understanding is that the GPS refresh rate for the Android phones (and most phones in general?) is 1 HZ (once a second). I read on a forum for a paid app that I use on my Hero that there's talk that 2.0 or 2.1 or possibly even just a future release will support the use of Bluetooth GPS receivers with will allow for the 5HZ GPS refresh rate or even newer standards as they come out.Has anyone else heard this or know of any more details related to this?

Is this correct?A user has reported this to me.I was wondering what the 1.5 public release date was since I haven't had a chance to update my software for 1.5 yet.I thought it would be end of May, but people already have it apparently.Furthermore, even if I download the 1.5 SDK,is there any way to test my code on my phone with 1.5 before the 1.5 upgrade is pushed to my phone.and when will that be anyway?I was surprised to have a user report that his new G1 was using 1.5.Does this not come as a surprise to others?

I've been looking around to see which brands have Android phones available that can run plain vanilla 2.1 or 2.2 Android.
So far, haven't found many:
- Google: Nexus One (2.1/2.2)
older versions:
- HTC: Magic (1.6 if I'm not mistaken)
- Samsung: i7500 Galaxy (1.5/1.6)
If any of you know other phones running vanilla Android, please help me update my list.
I'm also interested to know if a vendor's custom shell can easily be switched off to get the 'vanilla experience'. I've heard that that is no longer the case at least for HTC Sense.
I found a video which showed that by just turning off the Sense process, and then hitting the home button, you can stop the sense interface (though this may apply to the launcher only). In that case, HTC's Sense-equipped phones may qualify

Is it true that ANY Android phone can be used for App development and testing? I'm trying to find some inexpensive off-contract hardware for development and testing of our Apps. I've found some devices I can buy New with No Contract for $150 to $300 (like the HTC Aria or the Huawei Ascend). Is there anything that would prevent me from using these devices for USB debugging and app testing? I guess I'm concerned because I've read how the HTC Aria has been locked down by AT&T to limit applications. I suspect this won't affect me loading apps using ADB, but I'd like to be sure.

I have a GS3 for work and a LG Optimus G Pro for my personal. I'd love to just carry 1 phone. I found an app to forward text messages, I know I can forward calls, so all incoming communication works great.
Out going I use MightyText for send text messages from my computer. But is there a way to spoof my caller id of my other phone? For example my work phone? So that I can place calls from my personal as my work number?

I have a HTC Incredible and my Fiancee will soon be upgrading to an Ally. I want to share my calendar on her phone, and vice versa. In essence I want my entries to show on her phone or hers on mine so we don't set appointments or end up with conflicting events. I know people have done this, but I'm just not sure on the steps needed to do so.

This is not an EVO vs Epic discussion thread. You can find that thread here: Evo 4G vs Epic 4G. This thread is my point of view. If you have comments on my point of view, that is fine. Any comments that start an argument or debate will be reported and asked for removal.
What I am trying to accomplish here, is a non-biased, detailed review that I can update at will for both devices. I will lay out the good, the bad, the ugly, and the great for everyone to see. If you don't like hearing/reading bad things about your phone, you should not read this thread.

Some of you may recognize me from having decided on going with the EVO. Well, it turns out my girlfriend gets a better deal on handsets with Verizon's network. She can get Droid 2 Global, Droid Incredible, or Droid X for free with $25 "all you can eat" lines. They are a bit more pricey per month than sprint ($5), but with free phones that seems like the network to go for. Her line doesn't require a contract either (although mine will). She is pretty much decided on the Incredible I believe. She likes the size (moving from iPhone 4s), likes the fact that there is no slide-out keyboard, and likes the nice quality of the screen.I am torn between an incredible and the Droid X. The big selling feature of the Incredible right now (since most specs are really similar) is the fact that Best Buy will have them for $1 at the black Friday sale. The other two phones will each run me $150-$200 out the door.
I guess I just wanted some incite on what you all think would be the better/best choice. The worst thing about the incredible for me is the tiny battery in it, although I know we can go aftermarket. My nunderstanding is that a 1600 mha battery wouldn't increase the bulk, but add a little weight, which is fine. Also, the incredible doesn;t ship with an SD card (I don't think?), though it comes with 8GB on board, so I could get an 8-16 gb card for our music for far less than the difference (of $150-$200) for the other droids.

I'm a Verizon user, and happy with the network but I'm still using a Droid Eris which is getting a bit on the old side (okay, maybe a dinosaur in the technology world). So I've been researching a newer phone, I'd like an Android world phone which leaves me with 3 options, D2 Global, Droid Pro (not all that appealing to me) and the yet to be announced HTC Merge (basically the G2). I like HTC phones, I think Sense is a good skin, the Merge will easily handle my uses from a hardware standpoint. So naturally Verizon went and made it a Bing phone, without bashing Bing, Google integration is huge for me. I use search and maps more than I actually talk on the phone, so being stuck with Bing is a deal breaker.
This of course brings us to Root, I generally understand the concept but leave the programming to those smarter than myself. After those smarter people manage to Root the Merge, how difficult would it be to get the phone to the point where I get full Google integration back? I mean the whole deal, to the point where the soft search key brings up a Google search bar (I use that a lot). Is it just a matter of someone cooking up a ROM and I simply load it and go on with my life? If I'd have to use to convoluted work around where I have to download a new launcher, some google apk and what not just to use Google on my Android phone, I may just go with the D2 Global although it's not my preferred form factor. Sorry that's so long for a basic question, just wanted to be clear on what I'm looking for.
