View 4 RepliesIs there any portrait QWERTY models coming down the stretch besides the already announced...?
I know Motorola have several models (CHARM, DROID PRO, SPICE) but I want an open phone (custom ROMs).
The other current/announced models are basically non-existent.
I currently have the Nexus one but want something different like a qwerty sliding keyboard with similar screen size. I did a little search and the only thing that comes close to its screen size is the Motorola Droid? Droid looks outdate as I think its been out for awhile now, so my question is are there any new phones coming out with large screen with qwerty? Or any phone on the market now that is worth looking at? Must have larger screen

I'm planning on staying with AT&T as I'm grandfathered into the unlimited data plan and I do like their coverage and being able to use voice/data simultaneously.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm wanting to move over from symbian. Been a happy user for many years, but Nokia simply seems to be heading for a fall in all respects. This silly Ovi thing which will never take off, and the rapid decline of the quality and innovation of their handsets is the final nail in the coffin for me.However, I can't see any Android handsets that do it for me.While I think the operating system is miles better, there seems to be a massive drawback for Android phones - the imaging. There's not a single one with a decent camera - the hero and galaxy both have 5mp, but the images taken by them are nothing in comparison with all the Nokia generic 5mp CZ ones.So is there anything coming up that I would like? I noticed the Samsung behold 2, but that seems to be US only. Not to mention it might not be an better than the galaxy camera.I really don't want to go back to Nokia, but since I use my phone as my main camera, it has to be reasonably good. I know about the upcoming SE beast, but that's got a 4" screen, and I sold the i8910 because it was simply too big to comfortably operate.So.is there anything that could interest me? All I can see is the behold 2, and like I said, that seems to be US only (I'm UK).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had an HTC Desire (actually I had 4) before I got a refund due to a whole host of technical problems. Given that the problems I encountered don't seem to be widespread (mostly concerning the vibrate mechanism failing), I am thinking I may have just got caught up in a bad batch and am considering trying again.I tried other phones but nothing really compares to the Desire at the moment. The iPhone 4 looks nicer, but the OS bores me to death and it seems there are far more technical problems with the iPhone than the Desire at the moment.I have looked around for other upcoming phones and, aside from the Evo 4g which is not in the UK, I can see no other alternatives to the desire. Am I missing any other options?I don't consider the Galaxy S an alternative as it looks and feels like a cheap plastic toy.
View 15 Replies View Relatedjust about 3 weeks ago I went from an iphone 4s to the Galaxy S4, and literally up until a couple days ago everything has been going smoothly. Even texting. But recently , texts from an important number (a number that used to have no problem coming through) are not coming through. So I found since the other phone is an iOS device, and my previous phone was iOS, I had to turn off my iMessage and disassociate my Apple ID from my iphone. I did both of these things, but now this number that is trying to text me is saying the texts won't even send.

View 21 Replies View RelatedJust picked up the EVO 4G and looking to root in order to remove the Sprint apps and other bloatware (Peep, Footprints, etc.). I'm just trying to find out if it will be possible to use OTA Sprint firmware updates (i.e. the inevitable 2.2 down the road) once the phone is rooted, and if so, will it reset the phone (delete all data) or merely revoke root access? Down the line, I'm not so concerned about having root access, mostly right now with removing the excess.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOkay I love android and def will never go anywhere else. With that said I am really missing the nice qwerty keyboard that I used to have on my palm. Ive tried the slide out keyboards but i hate them more than i can explain. I was wondering if there is any rumor or phone similar to the Moto Charm style that could be hitting verizon. Ive searched and havent been able to find a whole lot so im hoping the knowledge here will help.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have found descriptions of 3 different default keyboards on my HT-03A but can only find the phone one i.e. ABC = 1. Do I need to download an app? View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got a activity with one AutoCompleteTextView with associated 'doit' and 'clear' Buttons and a read-only TextView that displays the result of 'doit'. These results are being partially obscured by the QWERTY keyboard. I'm trying unsuccessfully to shift focus from the auto complete text view to the clear button (or the read only text view) thinking that as soon as the auto complete text view loses focus, the keyboard will go away.
So my question is really two questions:
1) Once I succeed in programmatically arranging for my auto complete text view to lose focus, will the keyboard go away?
2) Focus is stuck on my auto complete text view. I've setFocusable (true) on the clear button and the other read-only text view, and called requestFocus() from each (I've tried both). Also setText("") in the auto complete view. No love. Can I not set focus to a read-only textview or a Button?
key board question: I just got my HTC hero and love it and the android os. I am not used to the qwerty onscreen keyboard. Is there an android market app that might make this easier for me?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI admit this is my first phone with a text keyboard. I was stunned to see it still laid out in QWERTY fashion. Why haven't you young people made mfrs switch to a straight alpha keyboard? Why are we still stuck with a keyboard layout designed for proper functioning of the mechanical levers of a typewriter rather than an English-speaking human? Why aren't the ten most commonly used letters put in the easiest spot to use them? Will this remnant of history ever go away? Has anyone under the age of 30 even SEEN a mechanical typewrite (not an electric or selectric, but truly manual)? And will DROID ever have an option for a non-qwerty keyboard?

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe prediction mode on the keyboard only seems to work in certain apps. It's definitely switched on and works fine when writing a text message or email, however it doesn't work when in the internet browser (e.g. when using google search) or when typing in the search box in the Android Market.
Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? It's really annoying! I have the latest firmware and haven't modified it, etc.
At first I was a little dissapointed with the slide out qwerty the droid provides, but after a bit of use I have become quite fond of it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo out of all the keyboards I have tried so far (swype, shapewriter, default HTC qwerty keyboard) The only one that seems to work for me is the compact qwerty keyboard that comes with HTC. However one annoying thing about this is that whenever typing in the google box or the address bar in the browser and certain other application the the xt9 feature is disabled. Hence I have to double tap each button. For example typing "qwerty" with XT9 feature disabled takes ages and annoying as heck. Do I have any free options for compact qwerty keyboards that work with word prediction and XT9 feature everywhere?
View 2 Replies View RelatedNow I'm not a professional reviewer, but I think I have some good insight to share. Also you may be wondering why this is in the EVO 4G forum, well the EVO is considered one of the best phones out there and I happen to own an EVO myself. I think the phone is great, but I'm usually critical of my devices and I like to take a look at the keyboard as I'm an avid texter. I see a lot of posts of people wondering why one keyboard is not as accurate as another phone. If you're a big texter and you're looking for a really good text phone, I promise this is a good read. So what makes the best touch QWERTY keyboard? Well we would have to look at the criteria of what makes the best QWERTY keyboard:
Keyboard layout
Capacitive touch screen quality
Multitouch
Accuracy of predictive text
If a phone can do all of these things perfectly, you'll have a phone that will be a texting monster. Lets take a look at what I think is the most important criteria, keyboard layout.
Portrait Keyboard Layout
Unfortunately, I think the EVO comes in last for keyboard layout. It has the largest screen, but it wastes most of it with its oversized cursor buttons. The cursor buttons need to be smaller for the other keys to breathe and need to be in a D-Pad layout. If the keyboard is top notch, we shouldn't be using the cursor keys so frequently to fix errors. Also why the keyboard takes up 2/3 of the screen confuses me. This is purely opinion, but I would rather have the "hide keyboard" button not take up space and move it in the upper right like the Nexus One and iPhone as a "Done" button. Lastly the EVO has the shortest "width wise" space bar. The space bar is used frequently and shouldn't be gimped like that. So that leaves the Nexus 1 and iPhone. If you look closely, the iPhone has the most space between keys. Most typing errors are from keys being so close together and hitting the wrong key.
The EVO faces the same problem, although the keys are bigger, so are the keys that are right next to it. Bottom line, keys not only need to be bigger, they need more breathing room in between each other. Another close detail is the "q" and "p" key. The EVO has those keys farther away from the edge of the screen than the iPhone and Nexus 1. The edge of the screen is the least responsive area, so is this space a benefit or a negative? My take on it is that one of two things happen, you either hit the neighboring key, or the key doesn't register at all. If you hit the neighboring key, it takes much longer to edit, rather than to just try and hit the key again. So even though the edge is less responsive, its more beneficial to have the "q" and "p" key closer to the edge and away from its neighboring key. Portrait Keyboard layout goes to iPhone, 2nd Nexus1, 3rd EVO 4G
Landscape Keyboard Layout
Next is landscape mode. I thought this deserved to be addressed as it changes everything. Although the iPhone still has more space between the keys, I'm gonna have to give this landscape mode to the EVO. Unfortunately the space bar on the EVO is STILL the shortest out of the three. So why does landscape make such a big difference even though the keys on the EVO are tightly packed? Well the difference is that the keys are now squares, instead of thin rectangles. This increases accuracy a lot and pretty much negates the disadvantages of having narrow spaces in between the keys. Again HTC could of capitalized on more space for the general keys by not taking up so much space with the cursor keys. As for the Nexus1, the keys are slightly bigger than the iPhone, but are still really tightly packed, so I would say its a tie.
Landscape mode goes to EVO, tie for iPhone and Nexus 1
Capacitive Touch Screen Quality
What good is a keyboard if the screen can't even read your touch actions? I know that the EVO is not tested in this, but we can still use this as a base of comparison. I really believe that the quality of the screen plays a very big role in the responsiveness of your touch actions. Nothing is more annoying then having your touch actions not being registered correctly or not at all. Right off the bat, the Nexus1 is out. So its now the iPhone and EVO 4G. From what I have read, but I can't seem to find the article. The EVO 4G uses a much higher quality capacitive touch screen compared to the Nexus1, most likely very close to the iPhone. So I'll say its a tie between the EVO and iPhone.
Capacitive Touch Screen quality goes to, EVO 4G/iPhone tie, 2nd Nexus 1.
Multitouch
With a multitouch keyboard you're able to type faster. All those fast typers out there can really appreciate a multitouch keyboard. I'm not sure if the Nexus1 supports this, but I don't think it does, so correct me if I'm wrong. So in this case you either have multitouch keyboard or you don't and the iPhone is the only one to have it.
Multitouch goes to iPhone, tie for EVO 4G and Nexus1
Accuracy of Predictive Text
I don't have any experience in this on the Nexus1, but only on the EVO 4G and iPhone. So anyone can chime in if I'm incorrect on this matter. I would think the EVO and Nexus1 would be the same considering they're both Android devices. From my experience and watching many videos, it seems like the iPhone does a better job at correcting and predicting text input compared to the EVO.
Predictive text goes to the iPhone, tie for EVO 4G/Nexus1
Misc
So the last thing I think all the phones adds a little something to make texting easier that doesn't quite fit the criteria. The iPhone OS has a pretty neat magnifying glass where you can move the cursor. I found this extremely handy. The EVO 4G has the cursor buttons instead, which isn't as slick, but can prove to be more precise. Then finally both the EVO 4G and Nexus1 has the voice to text feature from Google, which is pretty dang accurate.
MISC goes to the EVO 4G, tie for iPhone/Nexus1
So what phone do you think has the best, most accurate touch QWERTY keyboard? Is it one of these three, or another phone out there. Also what do you think makes the best touch QWERTY keyboard phone? I appreciate those who took the time to read, took me a while to type up.
Its very difficult to type in qwerty keyboard, Is there any other way to install old phone styple keypad in Sony Ericsson Xperia x8 mobiles? I tried HTC_IME.apk but its not working in x8 .I also tried BetterKeyboard6.6.apk
