Android :: De-Binging Verizon Phones

Nov 10, 2010

I'm a Verizon user, and happy with the network but I'm still using a Droid Eris which is getting a bit on the old side (okay, maybe a dinosaur in the technology world). So I've been researching a newer phone, I'd like an Android world phone which leaves me with 3 options, D2 Global, Droid Pro (not all that appealing to me) and the yet to be announced HTC Merge (basically the G2). I like HTC phones, I think Sense is a good skin, the Merge will easily handle my uses from a hardware standpoint. So naturally Verizon went and made it a Bing phone, without bashing Bing, Google integration is huge for me. I use search and maps more than I actually talk on the phone, so being stuck with Bing is a deal breaker.

This of course brings us to Root, I generally understand the concept but leave the programming to those smarter than myself. After those smarter people manage to Root the Merge, how difficult would it be to get the phone to the point where I get full Google integration back? I mean the whole deal, to the point where the soft search key brings up a Google search bar (I use that a lot). Is it just a matter of someone cooking up a ROM and I simply load it and go on with my life? If I'd have to use to convoluted work around where I have to download a new launcher, some google apk and what not just to use Google on my Android phone, I may just go with the D2 Global although it's not my preferred form factor. Sorry that's so long for a basic question, just wanted to be clear on what I'm looking for.

Android :: Choosing Verizon Phones

Nov 18, 2010

Some of you may recognize me from having decided on going with the EVO. Well, it turns out my girlfriend gets a better deal on handsets with Verizon's network. She can get Droid 2 Global, Droid Incredible, or Droid X for free with $25 "all you can eat" lines. They are a bit more pricey per month than sprint ($5), but with free phones that seems like the network to go for. Her line doesn't require a contract either (although mine will).She is pretty much decided on the Incredible I believe. She likes the size (moving from iPhone 4s), likes the fact that there is no slide-out keyboard, and likes the nice quality of the screen.I am torn between an incredible and the Droid X. The big selling feature of the Incredible right now (since most specs are really similar) is the fact that Best Buy will have them for $1 at the black Friday sale. The other two phones will each run me $150-$200 out the door.

I guess I just wanted some incite on what you all think would be the better/best choice. The worst thing about the incredible for me is the tiny battery in it, although I know we can go aftermarket. My nunderstanding is that a 1600 mha battery wouldn't increase the bulk, but add a little weight, which is fine. Also, the incredible doesn;t ship with an SD card (I don't think?), though it comes with 8GB on board, so I could get an 8-16 gb card for our music for far less than the difference (of $150-$200) for the other droids.

Motorola Droid 2 :: Verizon Sent Me 2 Phones

Nov 5, 2010

My Droid 1 failed within it's one year warranty. Went through quite a hassle with Verizon trying to get it replaced.They kept telling me a new one would be here by "Tuesday", no phone, call again, should be here by "Friday", no phone...OK, now i'm frustrated. Finally on Monday, a box from Verizon, and surprise, it's a new Droid 2 YAY. Now on Tuesday, another delivery with a box from Verizon, with yes...another Droid 2. That was almost 3 months ago. The second Droid 2 has just sat on my desk, no charges from Verizon, no phone call or anything asking for it back.Today, my son drops the in use Droid 2 phone and it shattered and it's not working. So, I say to myself, no problem I have a brand new one on my desk. My concern is that if I activate it, it will trigger some thing with Verizon and I will then be charged $500 bucks for the phone. What do you all think? Have I actually got a free 2nd phone, or is it just a pretty paper weight.

Motorola Droid :: Does Verizon Match Prices On Their Phones?

Dec 8, 2009

I've never been interested in verizon in the past, but I must have a droid now.I noticed that the droid is $119.99 on TigerDirect.com (w/ 2 yr contract) and the activation fee is waved, and I'm wondering if Verizon stores will match the price? Verizon is currently charging $199.99 and a $35 activation fee.I will be going in to the Verizon store after work to try to get them to match the price and looking for some advice in the meantime. Has anyone had any luck getting them to match the price? Or, should I just order from tiger direct?

HTC Incredible :: Warning About Verizon Charging Retail For Returned Phones

Jul 7, 2010

This thread won't be up long as mods always delete/lock my threads, but here is my experience with returning my Incredible and cancelling my order.

The CSR at Verizon, who was finally able to cancel my Inc replacement, mentioned something about my card being charged full retail when it goes back to the warehouse. I was like "WTF?". I ordered my original for $199.

She told me that when they are shipped back to the warehouse, they don't read the notes on your account and people are being charged the full retail price. She offered to monitor my account to ensure this does not happen.

Not sure about the whole dynamics of this, but its salt in the wound for me.

Just a heads up for anyone returning a defective Inc. that see a mysterious five hundred and some dollar charge from Verizon.

Motorola Droid :: Can't Setup My Verizon / Yahoo Mail Account (verizon.net)

Nov 10, 2009

For some strange reason I can't seem to set-up my personal e-mail account on this Droid phone. I click on "e-mail", I type in my e-mail address and my password, and then I click "next". And then I get a message that says my username and/or password does not match. But I am positive it does, as I have gone online to test it. I have tried retyping my username and passwrod over and over again without any success. I can't get passed that screen.
I have Verizon FiOS at my house, so my e-mail is set-up through Verizon/Yahoo.

Android :: New To Verizon And Droid

May 31, 2010

Last week I switched from att and the iphone to verizon and an HTC Eris. loving the phone and android. However being new i did not research too much and saw the HTC incredible is the latest and greatest. Yes it will cost me more for the phone but maybe I shoulda sprung for it. After all I will be stuck with it for the better part of 2 years. Is there that much of a difference in the 2.I am aware of the 8.0 camera and the faster processor. don't mind spending the extra $$ if its worth it.

Android :: A Verizon Droid Puzzle

Jul 11, 2010

I am based in Germany and publish the "Last Call Widget" on the Android Market.I have been steady improving it over time, but one group of users still complain about it not working on their devices.My widget listens for the "android.intent.action.PHONE_STATE" intent, and then sets an alarm to update the last call UI in 20 seconds, then 60 seconds, then 5 minutes, 1 hour, etc.This works reliably on all my test devices, even with aggressive task killers (try it yourself). Unfortunately I have a cluster of users with Motorola Droids on the Verizon network who complain that the UI does not automatically update. I believe Verizon is a CDMA network (we have GSM here in Europe), though the Android API docs don't specify any implementation differences.This could also be a driver issue on the Motorola Droid (we have GSM Motorola Milestones in Europe).

Android :: Verizon Or Sprint / Droid 2 Or Evo

Jun 3, 2010

This summer i would like to purchase my first smartphone. I'm out of contract with Verizon so switching carriers is a possibility (not att) I did all the research I could handle and I came to two conclusions or possibilities. Jump ships to sprint for the HTC Evo (I like the mobile hotspot feature, the hdmi feature, and eventually the possibility to stream netflix).Wait for Verizon to release the Droid 2 or Shadow that would have similar specs, (I'd like to have a physical keyboard though with droid 2)Is sprint's cheap plans and bang for your buck really as enticing as it sounds or will i regret leaving verizon's coverage?? I live in rural Kansas btw, everybody here has Verizon. I don't know anybody with Sprint.

Android :: Is Droid X Enough Of A Reason To Go Verizon?

Jul 5, 2010

I am a fan of T-Mobile. I like the ability to pop out my SIM card, and pop it in the next phone of choice, bringing everything with me. This is especially handy due to the fact that I work on a naval base tha does not permit cameraphones of any kind. I like T-Mobile's customer service. They are always polite and know what the hell they are talking about. I'm pondering getting a Galaxy S for T-Mobile.On the other hand, Verizon's new Droid X looks amazing. I love that 4.3" screen. (had the HTC HD2 with the 4.3". Loved it) I would mention the processor and other features, but it seems these two phones, minus the physical keyboard I don't care about, are close to par.Verizon, I must begrudgingly say, also have better coverage where I live. This Droid almost looks appealing emough to stay with Verizon and upgrade.So, do I get the phone I'll probably like more, or get an almost as nice phone with the ability to remove my SIM and have a crappy phone at least at work. ( keep in mind that I have access to a landline at all times at work, anyway.)

Android :: Stay With Verizon And Get Incredible Or Get Evo?

May 23, 2010

looking forward to getting my first android. I currently have an LG Dare with verizon and my contract isn't up until October. So I'm due for an upgrade and can get the Incredible whenever I want. I have been reading up on the Evo (still don't know a lot, but I do know some of the differences between the phones) and can't decide if the Evo is worth getting to pay $80 for ETF.I just started working at Walmart so I can get a 20% discount at Verizon, not sure on Sprint as of now, I live Springfield, MO (3rd largest city in MO) Sprints site says it has "best" coverage, but I don't see 4G being in the picture for a while.Should I stay with Verizon and get the incredible and just get a 4g phone next year? or make the leap to my 3rd carrier in 6 years?

Android :: Verizon Dropping Google Search

Sep 9, 2010

EXCLUSIVE: Verizon Dropping Google Search From All Future Androids? Android Phones, Android Tips, Android News Thedroidguy.com. "We've been working on this story since yesterday in regards to the Verizon Samsung Fascinate, A Galaxy S Phone. After the Samsung Galaxy release event in late June we discovered, as the rest of you did, that Bing would be the search on the fascinate. We pinged Verizon spokeswoman, back on July 1, 2010 who gave us this reply: We also have a great relationship with Microsoft and Bing is the default search engine on our feature phones. Customers may change the search engine on their phones if they like. However after careful review of the Samsung Fascinate we found that the Google Search" bar is not in the Android Widgets menu, nor can you access it from market. Also we tried several of the Google Seach bar and have not been able to get those to work either. These are working on the Captivate, and Vibrant as side loads. Here where the story gets interesting. 2 of our Verizon tipsters, including the one who substantiated those HTC Merge photos back on August 4th, have told us that Verizon is dropping the Google Search from all future Android Devices and offering Bing in it place. We were under the impression that Verizon is committed to the entire Google/Android experience."

Android :: Sign A Contract With T-mobile For A G2 With Verizon?

Nov 25, 2010

I like both phones a lot. Each has something that it can do better than the other. Now I'm just kinda picking by the carrier. With Verizon, I will most likely have better coverage everywhere I go, which is important because my dad is a truck driver. I will be paying $180 for for 2 lines with 1500 mins, web on both phones, and unlimited texts I will be stuck on 3G, not 4g. i heard that verizon's 3G is still pretty fast though. With T-mobile I will prob have worse coverage everywhere I go. Paying for 3000 mins, unlimited texts, web on both phones, and will be getting DOUBLE the amount of minutes from Verizon AND 30 BUCKS CHEAPER. I will also have access to t-Mobile's "4g", which isn't too good, but will get better over time. So at first glance, it's obvious I should go with tmobile, but because my dad travels all over the place, I don't think he'll always have coverage compared to Verizon. I am located in North New Jersey and my dad usually goes to PA, NY, VA, ML, and CT. So which carrier is best for coverage in the North East?
