Android :: Way To Receive WiFi Calls Without Running Special App?
Aug 29, 2010
Question: My wife and I both have an Evo 4g. We live in the US. She will be traveling Europe for three months and I would like for her to be able to call me free through WiFi access. What app would be best for this situation? Something that is most like a normal phone call would be ideal. Also I would much rather be able to receive calls without running a special app. Simple and easy is important.

I saw somewhere that you can supposedly turn off your 3g (mobile network radio) and use wifi to make/receive calls. Is this true? I've attempted to test this out by using the mobile widget and turning it off. I can make and receive calls with only wifi on, but I still find it hard to believe. I'm assuming that I haven't fully turned off the 3g radio. Looking for options, as I work in a bad reception zone (basement).

I work in a hospital so I'm surrounded by many thick walls and it seems to drain my battery a lot. If I turn on wifi and turn off mobile network, will i still be able to receive texts and phone calls?

I understand the concept behind not needing to use them when it comes to ram usage; if a program isn't active its ram can be released so it can be used by other applications.however, how does the android OS deal with cpu use by applications not active? this is the only reason i would think apps should be killed; there's nothing preventing them from using up cpu cycles while in the background.do they need to make special api calls to use cycles if not active?

Does anyone know of an app (for hero) that would allow me to make and receive calls on my desktop when my phone is plugged in via usb? I have desktopSMS going and was wondering if there is something similar for calls. I have unlimited voice/text so i don't need anything to avoid that, my problem is that where i sit in the office i can't get a signal on the phone, but plugged in via usb my phone can sit on the window sill and get reception so it would be handy not to have to run across the room every time it rings! i tried searching the forums for this but on and pc are too short to search so you can imagine how many hits for "receive calls" there were!

I have just installed Donut version 1.6 on my HTC Dream. The install went smoothly. But when I try to start my WiFi I get the "unable to start wifi" message. Never had a problem in 1.5. I see wpa_supplicant doesn't have access to others, I tried changing the permissions of the directories and wpa_supplicant.conf file to 777 but they keep getting set back again so that other doesn't have access. Do I need to set up a special user?

I have started developing a tool, which should react on an outgoing call or sms and also to be started at boot time. The start at boot time does work properly, but I'm not able to receive the broadcasts for the outgoing calls.
Who can tell me, what is wrong with my code? For this, I added two receivers in my manifest and implemented the broadcast receivers:
manifest.xml: <receiver android:enabled="true" android:name=".BootUpReceiver"
android:permission="android.permission.RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED">
<intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.BOOT_COMPLETED" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" /> </intent-filter> </receiver>
<receiver android:name=".TelephoneViewer" android:enabled="true" android:exported="true"
android:permission=""> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
<action android:name="android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED" />
<action android:name="android.intent.action.PHONE_STATE" />
<action android:name="android.intent.action.NEW_OUTGOING_CALL" />
</intent-filter> </receiver>
TelephoneViewer.java: public class TelephoneViewer extends BroadcastReceiver {
@Override public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) {
Log.d(this.getClass().getSimpleName(), "Telephoneviewer.onReceive()");
Toast.makeText(context,"TelephoneViewer.onReceive()", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); }

My Hero has been playing up recently. Drops calls as I try and make them and will not receive calls. I did a factory reset and it all worked again earlier this week but it has just gone back to no calls.

Noticed this the other night. Calls go strait to voicemail. As soon as it goes into evdo, calls resume as normal. If I turn off the network, I never have an issue. Any idea?

There's actually a phone made by Fujitsu that's similar in that it can be booted into the full desktop windows 7 32 bit by the switch of a button. The downside I see to it is that when you are running it the phones radio is turned off so you can't receive calls or texts also the phone UI is some proprietary Fujitsu software. Needless to say it looks pretty lame compared to Android but nevertheless it's still pretty awesome looking. Here's a few links: URLs....

I?ve had my HTC desire for about 3 weeks until now not had any problems, but now i can?t seem to make or receive calls or text. When I try to ring someone it just beeps and ends the call. When someone rings me it says unavailable. Nor can i send or receive texts. I?ve spoken to my network operator and everything is fine on their end and also got a new sim card from them just in case it was a sim card fault. Anyone know what the problem could be?

I rooted my phone successfully last night and installed MoDaCo.
Everything worked OK. Today I tried Cyanogen and it seemed to work OK. I've tried to install a couple of themes. One worked and one didn't.
I don't know when, but my phone will now not send or receive texts or calls. I still have a 3G data connection (back to MoDaCo) and the internet and Market work fine.
I really don't know what to do. The recovery image "recovery-ra-nexus..." seems to have disappeared from the bootloader. The phone isn't bricked so I guess that there is a way out of this?
SO I've restored my first Nand Backup which is the recovery image ra-nexus-v1.7.0.
It quoted restore complete. I backed up and rebooted. Weird thing is it boots up into Cyanogen ROM!!! And now I have no service, NOTHING!

I used my phone with no problem yesterday (made and received calls), then went to sleep and charged my phone overnight. When I woke up this morning, I tried to make a call and just got "this number is not in use", thought it was something to do with that persons number. Tried to call some other numbers and always got the same thing. I asked my brother to call me and it just went straight to voicemail. Then, when I opened "Phone" I noticed that there was something wrong with my last few calls made. Phone numbers here in Iceland are 7 letters, for example 1234567.. but all the recent calls I made looked like 6171234567, that 617 always got added before the number I tried to call and that made it fail. I only see 1234567 when trying to make the call, when I look at the phone while listening to "This number is not in use", I never see that 617 until I've hung up and check the call log. I did try to call +3541234567 though (354 being the Icelandic country code) and that went through fine. But if I don't use it, the 617 gets added. Has anyone ever experienced this problem? I thought it might be some setting so automatically add a country/area code before a number or something like that, but didn't find anything in settings.

My wife's phone can't get calls - it can get texts and data fine. At first, calls would go straight to voicemail, and now there is a message stating "The number or code you have dialed is incorrect". Nobody who has tried calling is marked "straight to voicemail", and I had a friend who is not on her contact list call her and he go the same thing. I rooted and removed some bloatware over a week ago, and had no problems. She had adialer installed, and removing that did nothing. I can make calls from her phone, although earlier she said she tried calling me (I was holding the phone because I just texted her to do it) and she said I went straight to voicemail. Sitting here, I called my phone and several other numbers with her phone with no problems.

Somewhere in a period of 24-36 hours of being turned on continuously, my phone (a Sony Xperia Go with Cyanogenmod 11 running on it, but the problem was there before with stock rom too) needs to be rebooted, else I can't receive or send text messages or call. The text messages simply won't be sent and I don't get a waiting tone (or any sound for that matter) when I try to call and it'll eventually fail.
Now when I still used a stock rom, I'd see that I had lost network connection, but on the current Cyanogenmod build I still have full bars. This issue I then have to fix by rebooting my phone, as I stated. I have not tried setting it to airplane mode for a quick fix, but in all honesty, I'm looking for a permanent fix, not a temporary one. And this also seems to be an issue that isn't just with my type of phone.."

I updated my Eris to 2.1 about a month ago, and it's been running fine up until about last week. Lately, the battery hasn't been lasting me more than 12 hours, and I've done everything I can to save battery life, plus the battery cover usually gets hot enough to cook some eggs on top of. The problems I've encountered lately is with making and receiving calls. When trying to call someone, it seems to take forever. I know my phone isn't the fastest Android, but it used to work fine. It takes a good 30 seconds just to type in a 10 digit number; the phone usually freezes a couple of times, its just generally laggy.
When I try to receive a call, the same basic thing happens. The phone freezes up while I am trying to slide the bar down on the lock screen, etc. Here's the main issue. After sifting through the freezing and lagging, and finally get to the call, I cannot hear anything, and they cannot hear me. The call is connected; I see the notification up top, and I have got the vibrate to tell me it's connected.

All the incoming calls I've received since 2.0.1 update look like this: and it slides right/left not up or down like the arrows point. The whole animation graphic is rotated. No forced update, I waited till I got the OTA. Not rooted, no custom unlock or homes.

When my phone is on the dock and I receive an incoming call there is no sound, either through the stereo speakers or from the phone. The only notification there's an incoming call is the trackball lighting up. Obviously this could lead to missed calls. Is there a setting i'm missing so that I can actually get an audio notification of incoming calls when on the dock?

Just got my refurbished Captivate in the mail today, charged and activated it as per the instructions. It worked just fine for about 30 minutes or so. I put on a few apps and showed them off to my roommate, and things were going fine. Then all of a sudden I couldn't send or receive phone calls, nor was I able to get/send text messages. With no pattern or logic I would go from 3g to edge to neither of the two symbols (just full signal strength) to the international no sign where my full bars just were. If I typed and tried to send a text while the no sign was visible it would send and receive texts as soon as I got signal back, but that would only last a few minutes.
I've tried hard and soft resets and restoring the phone to factory settings, all to no avail, as well as checking my message center number. I've looked around in the forums and can't seem to find anyone who has had this problem, and I was hoping someone would have some advice or could point me to a thread that I may have missed. I'd talk to AT&T but chat hours are over and I have to be up early for work tomorrow and need my phone for that, so I'm not sure I can ask customer service tomorrow beforehand.

So recently I havE had people tell me they tried calling me but the phone never rang or said I missed a call. I get the voice mail if they leave one but no signs of then calling besides that. I love my captivate but I have trouble sending and receiving pic messages too. I've never had any other problems either. Anyone know what may cause this? If its the phone will they replace it for free?
