Android :: Way To Navigate App?
Nov 9, 2010
I'm developing a Twitter client for Android and i would like to know which is the better way to build my app. I want to have a listview that, when clicked, calls another listview to see details and so on but i would also like to be able to go back in my previous list. What is the best way to do this in Android? At every click i create a new intent associated to an activity and i do startActivity(intent) so that i can be able to go back with the Back button of Android. Is it the good way or is there a better approach? I would like to navigate onward and backward of n-levels.

I have a login page which has a Advanced button. The button sets a view where a user can add some information. When I click save, it goes back to my main view (loginpage) and all info is cleared? How can I save the state of the first view when navigating away and then back to it?

I just got a new Verizon Android by LG and it came with no manual. I mean there was something, but it was so basic, that it was practically useless. I kind of learned how to move around things and how to make it work, so now I have some concept how to work with my phone. However, there are some things I cannot figure out.
Is there a manual how to navigate and customize the appearance of the OS?
For now I have two simple questions:
1. There is a system bar with some icons on the top of the home screen. On the left there are three icons:
(a) one red with a white person in it,
(b) one with a sheet of bent paper going into something, and
(c) one I don't get and which came up right now - red phone handle and a white arrow bouncing of it. And the last one is puzzling me, because it just came up.
Is there a manual that explains all that?
Another thing - I am getting beeps every once a while, telling me that something is happening. I look - sometimes it's a missed call, sometimes a notification on Facebook, sometimes a new message, and sometimes it is something I have no clue where to find it. I really need a manual. Badly! Plus the phone goes black and locks after one second all the time, even when I am still not done with things, and makes me have to unlock it too often. Is there any complete and comprehensive manual that really teaches me how to use and customize the system?

My program creates a sqlite3 database. With the emulator I have been able to use adb shell and get to the file in /data/data/<package>/ databases/<database> to inspect data. But with a real phone, I just cant seem to find that file. I get some permission even doing an ls on the data directory. Any idea what I need to set up to navigate the filesystem?
$ Mac-202: adb shell $ cd data $ ls opendir failed, Permission denied $

I'm having trouble to figure out how to bring the paused Task back to foreground. As far as I understood, when I click HOME button while a task is running, the task will be paused (onPaused() of the current top-level activity will be called, right?). I think there might be a way to bring this paused task back to foreground since the task is still ALIVE, but I don't know how. Do I have to put some more codes in the activity (I mean the one that is paused)?

I want to set up some menu-like navigator for my app. There is a listView in the main page and it contains two items, click each one will show its child view with ViewFlipper, and if user clicked the back button, he will return to the homepage again. The question is how to make it, I can only use ViewFlipper to flip to next screen or privet screen, how to manage these child views here? How to put them in my layout XML file?

It seems as though the Android Market is not showing some apps. These apps are visible through 3rd party sites like AppBrain and Cyrket, but when you navigate to the Market on your phone, they are unable to be found. I've compiled a list of apps and devices that people across various support forums have posted that they've had issues with. I have a feeling this is a pretty major issue and Google doesn't seem to know about it yet. I'm advocating that everyone that has an Android device, to check the list of apps below. If you've discovered a missing app not listed, please post below.
Post here if you find an app through AppBrain, but cannot access it in the Market on your phone.
Affected Apps:
SlideScreen
LauncherPro
ADW.Launcher
Handcent SMS
People/Contacts Widget
WatchDroid
Where
Better Contacts
WeGolf

HTC Hero - 2.1 (Some apps are working)
HTC Desire - 2.1
Moto Droid - 2.0 and 2.1
Moto Milestone - 2.1

Going forward will Android maintain the sites for multiple SDKs that might be in use. For example at this very moment there may development teams that are working on 1.0, 1.1 and possibly 1.5. If the main site carries documentation only for 1.1 (current release) will Android make an effort to make the documentation available online for both 1.1 and 1.5 simultaneously when 1.5 is released? Or the online docs only reflect the current release?

I've been out looking at real estate lately and I was thinking how convenient it would be to have an app where I could enter 10 addresses then the app would use GPS and Navigator to plot the fastest route from property to property. This could be a huge timesaver.

About the only thing I miss from my old WinOS phone is the arrow keys on the keyboard. I don't see that on my Dinc. So, how do you navigate inside a text field? If I want to correct a letter in the middle of a long piece of text, how do I get there? Currently I am using my big fat finger to try and place the cursor where I want but that is certainly not very accurate and usually takes several tries to get it where I want.Earlier today I was editing an email addr in contacts and the long text exceeded the text window. I couldn't figure out how to even see the beginning of the text.

This may be a silly question, but is there a way to slow down the 'female' voice on the Navigate app? It talks way too fast, (no reason to) and mispronounces street names.

With Google's voice action (or voice search), I can use the "navigate to" command to start the navigation app directly. However, this seems to work only with address, name of places. For example, I tried "navigate to 1234 main street" or "navigate to san jose airport" or "navigate to Starbucks on oakland road". The commands were recognized in all cases. For the last one, it prompted me with a list of choices for the end points, and once selected, proceeded correctly with the navigation.
However, if I say "navigate to John Doe home", although it also recognized the command correctly (i.e. it came up with the prompt "navigate to john doe home" and asked me to choose "go" or "cancel"), it would not come up with the correct address from the contact list as the end point to navigate to, but instead it would come up with a list of end points not related to John Doe at all, even if I have John Doe in my contact list (with the home address).
I googled around and it appeared that other users have also experienced similar problems, with some dating back 2-3 years ago. I just discovered this since I just switched from iPhone to a Samsung Skyrocket (with Gingerbread v2.3.6). Seems to be a simple problem to resolve. I can't believe that this problem is not (AFAIK) getting the attention of Google as I think this would be encountered by a lot of people.
Also I am wondering if there is a way to get around this beside giving the full address in the voice search command.

I am using an LG Enlighten, not as a phone but simply something to connect to hotspots with, check my email, and such things. Since I was not doing anything vital with it, I didn't put much thought into backing anything up.
Now, irritated with the default web browser, Bing and suchlike, I downloaded a bloatware remover and deleted the browser, along with two or three programs that looked like Verizon bloatware. As it turns out, one of those was my home launcher.
I did back these apps up in the program itself, but that isn't much use since I can't even access the program without a home screen.
I realized what had happened when I pressed Back to get out of the app. Instead, it went to the last app I had used. And then the one before that, and before that, and so on. I tried to keep pressing back until it would take me to the market, where I could open up the bloatware removal app and restore the backups, but eventually I came to a black screen where I could do nothing at all.
I turned off the phone, and was unable to turn it back on without performing a factory reset. Now, the phone goes to the Activation screen, and I am able to connect to USB, but that's it. The escape sequence won't bring me to the home screen - the launcher is apparently still gone.
Is there a way that I can restore the home launcher?

Last week I started using LauncherPro Plus - excellent app and everything has been working well. until I installed Beautiful Widgets this morning.
1. Takes a long time to navigate from one menu screen to the next, often with a FC due to timeout.
2. When the widget finally appears on the Homescreen, it can't find my location (yes, I've tried all combinations of geolocation, GPS, town search, etc)
3. Weather will not update and the moon is always showing even though it's midday here.
I was so impressed with the skins for Beautiful Widgets - it's the last thing I need to complete my custom look using LauncherPro, and I'm very disappointed that they don't seem to work together

I have addresses saved for many of my contacts and but there doesn't seem to be a way to use a voice command to initiate navigator with directions to their address (i.e. "navigate to John B"). Has anyone figured out a way to do this?I know I can pull up the contact list manually and click the map icon for them and then get into navigator that way, but hoping for a simpler, voice driven way to do this.

After upgrading to 2.1, I had the Google navigate widget on my homescreen. It worked nicely and I used it a lot. I did a factory re-set to cure my Internet sharing problem (it worked) but now I cannot find the little blue triangle Google navigate icon anywhere. I can still get to Google navigate via Google maps, but would like my blue triangle widget back.

I'm brand new here and also just recently rooted my Droid. I installed Fabolous' NexTheme ESE81 R2 ROM using the SPRecovery method, and everything is running great except for one thing. When I search in Google maps and find my destination, the navigate button is greyed out and is unclickable. If I do a voice search of say, "navigate to [Destination]", the navigation app loads up and works fine.
What I am wondering is if possibly I missed something when installing the ROM that caused some conflict with Google maps? I searched around here and also other forums and didn't find much of an answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Here is a picture I took with drocap2 so you know what I'm talking about:
