Android :: Way To Do Groups In A Listview?
Jun 23, 2010
Is there a way to do groups in a listview? Like I have a list of certain states, each state has its own sublist. I'd sort of like to replicate the HTML optgroup/option setup where you have a parent group then child groups. Is there a way to do this built in or would I have to do something tricky with a custom view for Parent elements then switch the view back to the child element style.

In my app I have nice ExpandableListView. I would like sometime, depending of situation, to expand some or all groups. I would also like to be able to remove/hide groups, expand all and basically have (visually) ExpandableListView without groups. I looked at all available methods for ExpandableListView and couldn't find any that would do what I want to do.

Android developer is the only part of my life on google groups and call me thick but I can not for the life of me understand how it works ! I have the hardest time following a thread I'm participating in because I can simply not find it back when I look for it, even using the search engine at the top ! I'm not receiving email alerts to warn me when somenone answers in it. In my profile tab, there is a summary of my last messages ... Which lags by 2 weeks !! Sometimes message I sent never appear there at all. I'm subscribed to a "Gay Pictures" group I'm pretty sure I never applied to.

There must be a way to do this. How can you tell a ListView that has a header to not scroll it when the user scrolls the contents? I want it to stay in a "stuck" position so that the user can always see what column the content applies to.

New to android and really like it. However, seems like the maintenance of contacts is a common source of confusion. I have contacts from my Gmail displayed. I have a created a group of contacts that I have been able to add contacts to. However, not all contacts are available to be added to this group.
Under the general contacts page, all the contacts are there (including many imported from gmail that I don't care for since every email that has ever been used seems to be saved). When I go to edit the group and add a contact, not all the contacts are displayed as available to add. I have gone into my gmail contact list and made sure that the contact I want to add is listed under the "my contacts" heading.

I'm looking for a way to do two slightly different things:
1) I want to be able to assign different ringtones to different groups on the phone (ie based on the groups assigned within the Google contacts database).
2) I really need to be able to set the phone on silent overnight for everything (calls, emails, sms messages) EXCEPT for calls from people in a VIP list who I want to be able to wake me up.
I've been able to do this on "dumb" phones for the last 10 years! Can anyone restore my faith in this thing's smartness?

I am using the Samsung Galaxy S. I have sync working and all my Goggle contacts are listed in my phone. But they all appear in one group, called Google. I have my Google contacts in groups, and had hoped that the sync would bring down the group hierarchy. But it did not. However my phone is aware of the Goggle groups, because if I try to create a group in the phone with the same name as a Goggle group, my phone raises an error saying that the group exists. But I have no visibility to my Goggle groups on the phone. I only see a "Google" group. Is it possible to see my Google groups in the phone? If so, how?

I posted a detailed comment about typos in Android documentation several hours ago. My post is nowhere to be seen. Why did Google Groups hose my post? Maybe Google doesn't care that their Android documentation contains typos.

I was thinking, wouldn't it be great if all the android reference documentation was in the pages section of this Google Group, i.e. stick everything in here:
http://developer.android.com/reference/packages.html

I have looked around a couple forums trying to find an app or process that will allow me a way to select a particular group of contacts as a favorites widget. It would be great if I could have my work contacts as one widget on one screen and my personal favorites on another. I also tried to put the work group into the favorites widget without success. I am one of those people that has several different "scenes" customized depending on where i am and what I'm doing. The current widget just doesn't work for what I need. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have used the bettercut app to make shortcuts to individual contacts, but that is not really what I'm looking for.

Problem 1.
I have this class:
public class ContactGroups {
// Form an array specifying which columns to return.
String[] projection = new String[] { Contacts.Groups._ID,
Contacts.Groups._COUNT, Contacts.Groups.NAME, Contacts.Groups.NOTES };
public Cursor getList(Activity act) {
Uri contacts = Contacts.Groups.CONTENT_URI;
// using the debugger code kills here
Cursor managedCursor = act.managedQuery(contacts, projection,
null, null, null );
return managedCursor;
} public ArrayList<String> getColumnData(Cursor cur) { ArrayList<String> aa = new ArrayList<String>();
if (cur.moveToFirst()) { String name;
String notes;
int nameColumn = cur.getColumnIndex(Contacts.Groups.NAME);
int notesColumn = cur.getColumnIndex(Contacts.Groups.NOTES);
do {
// Get the field values name = cur.getString(nameColumn);
notes = cur.getString(notesColumn);
aa.add(name);
// Do something with the values. } while (cur.moveToNext())
} return aa;
} }
I am calling this as:
ContactGroups mGrp= new ContactGroups();
final ArrayAdapter<String> aa;
aa = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1,mGrp.getColumnData(mGrp.getList(this)));
myListView.setAdapter(aa);
And having:
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.READ_CONTACTS"></uses-permission>
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.WRITE_CONTACTS"></uses-permission>
I get a Source not found error and a Logcat error
ERROR/DatabaseUtils(617): java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid column _count
Problem 2.
Where do I create manually contact groups?

My app (first written for Android 1.6) reads groups and contacts but I have so far only been able to write code for 2.0 that compiles but I have never executed. Since the Contacts API and particularly the way groups work has changed substantially in ways that I haven't quite been able to find out I need to try it on a phone to see how it now works.So is there any way at all I can test contact groups in the emulator? I have looked all over for help on this and all I have been able to glean is that I cannot get groups into the emulator unless I create them in a Google (or other, Exchange?) account then sync with it. However I cannot seem to sync/open an account from my emulator - and this I have read may be impossible as you can only do it from a phone with a valid IMEI.

Is it true that if you have a ViewGroup, say a RadioGroup, you can't align items outside the group to ones inside the group (using toRightOf, alignTop, etc.) That is, does toRightOf, toLeftOf and the rest only work with views at the same hierarchy level? I was trying to label some vertical radio buttons today and find I can only align to the RadioGroup and not the buttons inside the group.
If I remove the RadioGroup, then I can align things OK. There are lots of workarounds, of course, so I'm not stuck. Just thought I'd ask and document. And, BTW, where is the hot sh*t resource editor for Android so I can bang out screens quickly like the iphone guys, using a visual interface designer that knows all these silly interactions? The tools I've seen so far have been toys.

I am looking for a good phone book app that would allow quick access to all of my contacts sorted by groups. All i want is a contact list with group name tabs at the top or something like that. But no... not a single app can do this. Come of them support groups, others dont, but all of them make you jump through hoops to change them on the fly.
So far I have tried:
The Original Android Contacts
Phonebook
aContacts
Contact Blast
Star Contacts

When I create a contact on the phone and assign a group, there are TWO 'friends' and TWO 'family' groups. All the contacts I setup from my GMail account show up in one 'friends' or one 'family' group. The duplicate groups are both empty. I went to an area where I can delete groups but the empty 'friends' and 'family' groups cannot be deleted. However, it looks like the groups I setup at GMail (where all my contacts are in) CAN be deleted. I'd rather not delete those groups because then those contacts will probably no longer be in a group, and the GMail/GContacts distinction will probably be lost. The reason this is annoying is because when I create a new friend contact from the phone I don't know which 'friends' group to add it to. Has anyone else noticed this? Checking my GContacts only shows one 'friends' group and one 'family 'group', but the way.
