HTC EVO 4G :: Enable Both Landscape Orientations?
Jun 14, 2010
From what I've tried, the EVO only has portrait and left-oriented (aka turn the phone on its left side) landscape viewing. Is there any way to enable right-oriented landscape viewing (aka turn the phone on it's right side)? It is very difficult to hold the phone in left-landscape when it's charging and nearly impossible to type with two hands.

I've seen references to being able to specify two separate layout xml files for an activity, one for Portrait and one for Landscape. I've not been to find any information on how to do that though. How do I specify for each activity which xml file is it's portrait layout and which is the Landscape layout? Is it also possible to specify different layouts for different screen sizes? If so, how is this done?

I am finding that my layouts tend to look great in one orientation but if I change the phone's orientation, things are a mess. For example on one screen I have 6 large buttons that look great in portrait orientation but if the user changes phone orientation, those buttons get cut off in portrait.
Do I need to code two layouts for every screen - one for portrait and one for landscape? That would be such a waste of time.

Hi developers, As I'm just an Android user, I might be illegally here. But I just found out that being left handed, I have a slight problem with my recently purchased HTC Magic. I have searched Market already, but could not find anything to help me. My problem is this: as I am left handed, I like to turn the phone to landscape orientation with the buttons to the left (turning it clockwise). As you will probably all know, this won't work. To get landscape you have to turn the phone counter clockwise. Would it be possible for one of you to develop something to enable left handed people to turn the phone to landscape like they would intuitively do, that is clockwise?

Was wondering if it were possible to have it set so that Swype would be the default keyboard for portrait & whenever you switched to landscape, the default Android keyboard would pop up as the default?
I did read this post here & was wondering if the info still stands. Figured I'd start a thread here since my question's not Incredible-specific.

Let's assume i got two activities "Main" and "Sub" Activity "Main" is forced into portrait orientation using setRequestedOrientation At some later point "Main" runs "Sub" using startActivityForResult.Somehow "Sub" also starts in portrait orientation while i would expect the call to setRequestedOrientation only to affect the calling activity. How do i get "Sub" to respect the system orientation while keeping "Main" locked in Portrait?

In a previous question I asked how I could display two different layouts for portrait and landscape orientations:
Problem switching to landscape orientation
Now I would like to know how I can save the state of my application before it goes into another orientation? I seem to lose this data any time orientation changes.

How does Android handle scaling of a video being played within a VideoView?
So for example if I have a video that is say 480 X 270 (width and height), aspect ratio 16:9. And, say the VideoView is added to a LinearLayout with LayoutParams of (480, 270). What will be width and height of the rendered video in portrait orientation in a device that is 320 X 480? In landscape? In another device that is 320 X 550?

Since the FROYO update some stuff is only in Lanscape and it's what I would call upside down. Is there a fix for that? Like Gmail and internet and some others I noticed. Other than that it's smokin fast and everything is working fine for me.

I've tried all the browsers and checked the settings for all. You can permanently put it in landscape but can you do it just by flipping the phone? Oh by the way, I breaking love this phone.

I've had my phone for a few days now, and love it! However, I can't seem to get it to go into landscape mode when testing or performing other functions. It's slipped into landscape maybe twice accidentally since I've had it. Any ideas?

I decided to give everyone an easy question. I already check for landscape via this method: if (getResources().getConfiguration().orientation == Configuration.ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE) But how do I tell which landscape? My Nexus One, at least, has two. Left and Right Handed. And yes, it does matter. If you are trying to relate a compass sensor to the screen, for example.

For some reason landscape mode seems to be broke. I have uninstalled almost every app that I have downloaded and restarted the phone several times and nothing seems to have fixed it. Anyone else know what might cause this? As of now no app works landscape unless it is landscape only.

My Evo seems to have a very strong preference for landscape view. Any time I am not holding the phone completely straight up it drops to landscape. Then even if I do push it back straight up it doesn't wanna go back to portrait view. Has anyone else experienced this and are there any tricks to get rid of the problem?

With all these other advancements why is it that even all these new super phones won't allow even an option to landscape the homepage. Seems the only phones that do it are the sliding and flip phones, and even then they usually have to be open. I find it rather ridiculous that I have to have a 3rd party app to do this. Any ideas?

I have a major problem with my Desire. When flip the phone sideways (to write messages), the writing doesn't appear when i hit the buttons. They appear when i flip the phone back, or when i send the message. But while writing in landscape, they don't appear. I have the stock rom. It's one week "old", so it haven't been "tempered" with (That's what my Hero is for)

Sorry if this has been addressed, I haven't found anything yet.I've seen screen caps on the web (I'm sure) of the G1 with the home screen in landscape mode, but when I turn my Magic to landscape, the Home screen stays vertical. Is this a limitation of the Magic? Will the home screen not switch to Landscape (horizontal) when the phone is turned?
