Android :: Support Our Local Business For Xmas Rant

Dec 11, 2009

just posting something I found out about last night while at the mall. seems that malls have been doing poorly during the holidays due to a large company who's first letter start W and ends in fart er I mean mart. even poor Santa who has to listen to the spoiled next generation while they relieve themselves on his pant leg had to pay daily rent to be in the mall. when I asked a few people about their kiosk rent, you know the little hut in the middle of the hallway, they said that the rent went from 1200/month to 4500 for the month of December. it's not a typo So maybe they gift we give this year could be a gift to ourselves by avoiding the 500+lbs wal****T women, screaming kids cranked out on octobers candy, and self checkout systems that freak when you put down your item too hard [COMPUTER VOICE] "[REMOVE ITEM FROM BAGGING AREA OR SECURITY WILL BE ACTIVATED]" [ CUE: Arnold Schwarzenegger from terminator] lets go to those malls and the $4,500 kiosk. don't forget to drink a 44oz and sit on Santas lap I would like some cheese with my whine sir.

HTC EVO 4G :: Rant - Shack - Pre Order

May 22, 2010

This is why I hate buying anything at Radio Shack, they pretty much make the majority of their people act like used car salesman. I went in and said I wanted to pre order the Evo to which the sales clerk tried to tell me I should get the iPhone 3gs. Seriously dude? So then I explain why I don't want an iPhone and the reasons I want the Evo. Listing multiple reasons making it obvious I have done my research and am not a n00b around phones. So what does this guy do? He asks me if I've seen a picture of the phone...now this was done because he was actually trying to be helpful and explain the size. But duh of course I've seen the phone if I know that much about it. I was even able to complete the sentence he was making about it being the size of the HD2. So anyways after trying to talk me out of it and then asking me those questions, he then tells me how he got to play with one the other day and it was amazing. Now if it was so amazing why were you trying to talk me out of it?

This leads me to another point. I then asked how the pre orders were going. At first he said they were great, then made some back handed comment about Best Buy doing better because they get more people. Which on one hand is probably true, but maybe it's because when you walk in you aren't upselled down your throat to buy every little thing in the store or told you should get something you don't want. I am dreading having to go in and for them to convince me I need some added on warranty through them when I already have insurance through Sprint. Then the guy asks my girlfriend (who has an iPhone) where she got her iPhone. She tells him the AT&T store, and then guilts her about it. WTF? Why do you think we went to the AT&T store? Because she is with AT&T. When I need stuff done for a existing phone with the company I am on I go to the Sprint store, not Radio Shack AKA The Shack AKA Wanted to sound hip so we copied KFC but it's not working.

The worst part of all of this, is this guy was just genuinely trying to do his job, which is a problem with management and the chain all together. They put so much pressure on these guys to "sell sell sell" that they end up scaring off customers. Of course this one incident is not indicitive of all Radio Shacks and I'm sure there are good people, in fact I had a good experience buying an HD Reciever there for an old T.V. The employee was nice and actually stopped me from buying a more expensive unit, then because he had to try to get me to do the warranty, he then whispered about how I didn't need it so I should just say no. That actually made tell a friend to go get the same one at Radio Shack that I had. However when someone asks about buying a Evo my first instinct will be to go to Best Buy or Sprint.

Ok Rant over. Now the numerous edits to correct my sloppy typing because I'm at the beach and too lazy to look it over.

I also should add I asked about the mini HDMI cable for the 20$ accessory since he kept shoving that down my throat as to why I was smart to pick Radio Shack (I wanted to tell him the truth that I was afraid Best Buy was out of pre orders). He said they didn't have them but would. I then mentioned how I probably wouldn't buy one there since the official ones would be like 30 dollars and I could get one online for 8. His response was it was practically the same price since I got 20 bucks free. Fair enough, but still not gonna happen dude. I assured him I would spend the 20 bucks and he needn't worry, but the HDMI cable was not in my future through Radio Shack.

HTC Droid Eris :: Voice Dialer Rant

Dec 14, 2009

OK I see there are a few threads on this so called "voice dialer".However, if you're driving along and activate voice dialer (which is simple enough, no problem there) what's the point of having to say "Call Robert Smith" and then have to look at the screen, see if it's got the correct name and touch it to make the call?Doesn't this defeat the purpose of voice activated dialing? My older Motorola Krave had a real touch free voice dialer that responded to you and asked if it's choice was correct at which point you could say "yes" and it would dial it.Now we have the latest greatest Androids that can't do that.Whoever developed this app had no clue about the dysfunction and potential hazards involved with this "feature".I love my Eris but was completely disappointed with this app.

HTC Desire HD :: Phone Stuck At Naming Phones Rant

Sep 15, 2010

Are they that lazy that they cant even give any of there new phones a real name. they just take the name of an older phone and just add the letters "HD" or "Z" to it. and the Desire HD and Z dont even resemble the original Desire is any way at all. also same thing with the Mytouch HD, wich is just a Mytouch 3G slide with out a keyboard. speaking of the Mytouch 3G slide that is another crappy named phone, why couldnt it have been called just the Mytouch Slide instead? did they really need to have "3G" in the title when 99.9 percent of all other android phones have 3G support? and now the Evo 4G and Epic 4G, are they going to have to make EVERY single upcoming 4G android phone have "4G" in the name too? and another thing that pisses me off is the "DROID" name. what idiot at verizon decided it would be a good idea to just rename all of there major androids to have the word Droid in front of it? why couldnt the Droid Incredible and the Droid Eris just be called the HTC Incredible and Eris just like they were originally planned to? and HTC did not even make the original "Droid" phone, so HTC shouldnt even be naming there phone Droid in the first place, ONLY motorola should. what is next? are they going to release another phone for verizon and call it the "HTC DROID Incredible HD"?

Android :: Publish An Application Update On Android - Market Without Deleting Local Database And Local Files

Nov 11, 2010

I published an application that stores data in a local database.

Now I have to publish an update to this application to fix some little bugs, but I am afraid that downloading and installing the update will delate the local database associated with the previous version.

I would like to know how the update system works. Will installing an update completely delete all the apk, files, databases associeted with the previous version?

If so, how can I avoid this in my code?

Android :: Openly Hostile Rant To Android Developers On Apps That Won't Shut Off Or Stay Shut Off

Jun 28, 2010

What possible reason could there be for you to code your apps so that they switch on in the background when the phone is turned on and use up precious battery life?

Or, why would you code your apps to stay on after I, the user, have hit the back button because I no longer want your app to run?

I mean, REALLY! Yes, I own up to being a newbie Android user, and what I don't know could fill the Library of Congress. Still, this is common sense we're talking about here. I've done some industrial app development and Enter/Exit, On/Off are basic pieces of logic in the main loop of an program in any language.

The only reason that we phone users need task killer apps is because you developers insist on creating apps that don't know when the f**k to turn themselves off.

And, it seems to me like you, the app developers, are one of the main reason why these phones have such crappy battery life. I mean, my Samsung Instinct, as bad as it was, got 18 to 24 hours of life off of one charge. With the Hero, I'm lucky if I can get 10 hours, and that's even with configuring my email download to only three times per day!

This is not hard, people. You code the app to stay off until, I, the user, manually turn it on. AND, you also code it to turn off when I, the user, hit the back button.

Yes, I understand that there are certain apps that it is advantageous to keep running in the background. So, fine, make it so those keep running. BUT, there is no possible reason for apps like Flashlight, or BBC News, or Camera, or SprintTV to have to run all the time in the background!

I am so tempted to just trash the lot of you. If I did, maybe I might not have as much functionality, but my teenager would be able to reach me late in the day because my phone battery would still have juice.

HTC EVO 4G :: New To Android - Is It Good For Business Use?

May 28, 2010

Considering (heavily!) the Evo but the boss just asked me how well it handles things like pdf's and .doc's and such. We're coming over from blackberries and I'm having trouble finding anything definitive about whether the Evo (or android in general) can handle those things natively. I see that there are apps that do it but come with mixed reviews. Just wondering what your experiences and/or expectations are.

Android :: Need To Sync Business Functions

Oct 7, 2010

New to android..been using WM 6.1 sync with outlook obviously seemless. Need the same type of functionality but it doesn't have to be with outlook. Looking for options to use for business. Being a small company I can go anyway I want, don't have any restrictions other than need to sync all with phone, laptop and desktop. Beginning to travel more so contact, calendar and task must sync (notes and a Today front end would be nice). I have tried Dejaoffice but I end up with 2 sets of contacts and calendars (Samsung and Dejaoffice) not to mention that the UI is lame (had just as good 15 years ago with Instant Recall). Don't mind rooting the phone if needed. So what options exist in the open source world? Love my captivate phone but need to be able to do business to keep it. Anxious to hear how the rest of the Android world does it.

Android :: Google Apps - MS Office Integration For Business

Aug 24, 2010

Just wondered if anybody here has fully committed their business (or works for a company that has) to the Premium Edition of Google Apps. If so can you give me any feedback on any real world issues that it has. Specifically I'm wondering how well it integrates with MS Office products. For example I receive a lot of Excel documents with embedded photos and .pdf files and will need to access and amend them. Similarly most of my customers use Excel and will need to be able to open a spreadsheet created by me in the Google system? Also can I migrate existing documents into Apps? I know these are fairly basic requirements and I would be surprised if Google haven't covered them, but are there any other issues that I need to consider before committing to the Gcloud?

Android :: Good Mileage Tracker For Business Owners?

Dec 14, 2009

I travel on the road a lot for work, and traveling expenses are probably my largest tax write-off. Yet, I've been unable to find a nice app in the marketplace that allows me to simply input my starting odometer and my ending odometer when I get home, and arrive at a simple calculation as to how many miles I traveled on that particular trip and what my approximate tax write-off would be.

On the Iphone, I used to use an app called "MileBug". It was great. Sadly I haven't been able to find anything that compares to that app in android. Do any of you know of a good app for such a purpose? I'm not interested in the plethora of apps available to monitor my gas mileage or my MPG. I just want a simple application that allows me to quickly record my miles traveled per trip.

Android :: Need App For Business Travel Expense Tracking / Reporting

Dec 21, 2009

I just got a Moto Droid for business use. If I can't find a workable travel expense app I may have to return it and find something else The biggest problem I'm having in finding what I need is that everything I've tried so far assumes that all expenses will occur in a single currency. Many offer "multiple currencies," but that just means that all expenses are tracked in dollars or euros or pounds, etc. What I need is the ability to enter an expense for a meal purchased in dollars at the airport in Atlanta, and then the next day enter a meal purchased in euros in Paris. I need to be able to have the euro expenses tracked in euros for the same report as expenses tracked in dollars. And I need to be able to record expenses in at least 4 or 5 currencies per report.

HTC Desire :: Sync With Vista Business Not Working

Jun 26, 2010

I have just bought an HTC Desire but i cant make the sync with HTC sync work. After af search of approximatitely 15 seconds a popup on the phone says that it can't find HTC sync on the computer. The USB connection works fine for file sharing. In my hardware monitor (dont know the english word for the window, but that in Control Panel -> System ->??? where you can see all attached devieces) i see a deveice called "My HTC" with a yellow exclamation triangle. I suspect the problem is here, but dont know has to solve it. The HTC sync has all button disabled so i cannot access the "Repair tool" i think there is in the sync manager.

- Disable all firewall(none), antivirus (Norton) and Spyware protection (AdAware) before installing HTC sync.
- Used "Run" -> "msconfig" to disable all non-MS processes and remove all starting app. Then restarted the computer and reinstalled (suggest to HTC to another user)..........

Can have a physical keyboard or a decent touchscreen keyboard. I don't care as long as it works better than my HTC Touch did. Once I got my Droid.
