Android :: Rotated Screens Compared To Accelerometer On Dell Streak

Sep 16, 2010

I have update our game to be able to handle devices with rotated screens (http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/09/one-screen- turn-deserves-another.html#links). I used a Motorola Flipout as a reference device and that one works great. The problem is that when the update with that fix came out I started to get reports that our game had stopped working for Dell Streak.

Do anyone know if there are special problems with screen rotation related to accelerometer output on Dell Streak?

And do anyone know what Dell Streak returns on the android.view.Display.getRotation() function call?

Android :: 4 Screen Phones Are Getting All The Hype - When 5 Dell Streak Takes Backseat

Jun 24, 2010

I used a Nokia 770 for over a year, and the difference between a 3.5"-3.7" screen and the tablet's 4.1" screen is pretty glorious. Now that such a screen size is making it's way to the modern fold (first with the HTC Evo 4G, and now the hotly anticipated Motorola Droid X), I can't help but feel the humble increase isn't enough to feign serious interest over your run-of-the-mill screen size. Certainly, it's bigger, but is it enough? When the Dell Streak first showed up, I instantly knew I wanted it. 5" is the perfect gap between large screen pocket device, and 9"-10" non-pocket device.

Yet, it seems the Streak's coverage is little, even though it's already out in the United Kingdom, and showing up here stateside in under a month. Why is it? Am I beyond the fray, and am alone in thinking that 5" is perfect rather than overkill? Or are people afraid Dell might jump the shark (since this is their first phone, and is putting a lot forward)? Or am I not seeing the bigger picture here, at all?

Why are the 4" phones getting all the drolling mouths and oh-la-la's, while a 5" phone is coming in no time at all to shut down the competition?

For comparison, a little evidence before I sound like a look spouting off:
Here, even on this forum it seems evident:
Dell Mini 5 (32/265)
Motorola Droid X (126/2,940)
HTC EVO 4G (5,132/92,865)
The Droid X forum has more than ten times the post activity, even though the Dell Streak has been a tangible product for twice as long. The EVO 4G forum has well more than that, but excuses to it, since it's been available to the public for longer than the Streak has.

Google Trends: http://www.google.com/trends?q=Dell+Streak,+Motorola+Droid+X,+HTC+Evo+4G
Streak's popularity on the internet has nosedived down after it's hands-on at D8, and quickly Droid X's searches are taking it's place. Meanwhile the non-Dell phones increase in both news and search activity.

General :: Dell Streak 5 - Market / Google Play Unavailable?

Jul 2, 2012

I've recently won a Dell Streak 5, but it appears to have been shipped without the Market or Play apps - when trying to download through the Google Play site, it tells me to open the shopping bag icon on my device - unfortunately, their isn't one!

I had a Dell Streak previously (until some git stole it on a train - I will find you Mr Thief, if you're reading) so i know market is available on the device - my g-mail account even contains all the old apps i have paid for when i was last using the same device

i'm aware i can probably install non-market apps using apk files, but due to laziness i really want to avoid this.

Android :: Where To Store Data

Jun 22, 2009

I'm writing an application that needs to store some small jpeg or pngs. Looking at the documentation i have seen that databases are stored under /data/data/package_name/databases I decided to store my data under /data/data/package_name/files. With the emulator i can see all these files (databases and images) under the proposed directories but moving the application on a real device and installing a file system browser i cannot see any file under /data. Can anyone explain me why? My application works perfectly on my mobile (HTC magic) so i think that data is downloaded and stored. If this is a security constraint,do i need to put the application under debug on the mobile in order to inspect file system?

Android :: Best Way To Store Images Within App?

May 5, 2010

I'm just looking for some insight into what would be the best way for me to store images as part of my app.

I have an activity that represents a 'Job' which has a couple of edittext's and underneath was planning on using the Gallery component to show images relevant to this job.

The job data is stored in a database (on the sdcard) so was also thinking of creating a table to store 'JobImages' and having each image stored as a byte array.

But I'm not sure if it would be better to store the images directly on sdcard under a folder structure specific to my application and the job. E.g. using the job ID number as a folder name.

Depending on which method I use will greatly determine the code that goes into an 'adapter' that allows me to bind to the gallery component so before I begin I was wondering if anyone has had the same design problem and what option they chose.

Android : Way To Store Values?

Apr 6, 2010

That's a lot of code... no time to read it over now.. but off the top of my head: look into either using a database, an Application class (that will run the whole time your app is alive), or adding extras to the Intent bundle before starting your subactivity. These are all methods to pass data around between activities.

Android :: Best Way To Store Data That Needs To Be Displayed?

Feb 23, 2010

For a particular activity - what is the best way to store data that needs to be displayed. The issue is that when the user changes orientation, you need to be able to re-render your activity which means you need to get back at that data that you use to render. I understand the MVC design pattern, but I guess I'm wondering where the M should be stored. Global variables? Static members of your activity? Serialized to private storage?

2. Store all images in single xml. Concern here is XML will be too big and takes time to parse.
