Android :: Java Rare And Impossible Exception Causing Force Close

Apr 19, 2010

I have an interesting problem being reported to me from an android application I have published. I have a two-dimensional array that I am iterating through using two for loops like so:

for (int i = 0; i < arr.length; ++i)
{
for (int j = 0; j < arr[i].length; ++j)
{
if (arr[i][j] != 0)
// does stuff
}
}

The problem is, somehow arr[i][j] != 0 is throwing an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException. But very rarely. I have thousands of people use the app on a daily basis and get maybe twenty force close reports. Is this something I can't avoid, maybe a problem with the phones memory, etc. or is there something I can do that I haven't thought of yet?

Android :: HTTPClient Causing App To Force Close

May 25, 2010

I get this error on my Android emulator: Sorry The application has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. [Force Close]

I think the code that is creating the error is this: HttpClient client = new HttpClient();

I have imported the following from JARS:

CODE:............

Is there a way to get more details on what the error is? The message described above isn't very helpful...

Stacktrace:

I've looked at this and I think this is the problem. (it was too long to post all on here..)

Android :: Force Close After Renaming Package / Causing This?

Nov 13, 2009

I have modified a sample app, and it works fine. When I rename the package though, it force closes. I have modified the package name in all the .Java files, as well as the manifest, in addition to the physical directory structure. I've even tried to create a project from scratch and copy the relevant code in. Any ideas what could be causing this? Am I missing something?

Android :: Exception - Attempt To Acquire A Reference On A Close SQLiteClosable

Sep 27, 2009

I posted this back in May on the [android-developers] Google Group. I never heard back and was not able to reproduce the problem until one of my students did last week. I figured I'd post it here and see if it rang any bells for anyone.

In one of my code samples, I have the following method:

CODE:..............

When I run it, sporadically, I get this:

CODE:......................

This makes no sense to me. The database is definitely open. The SQLiteClosable is the SQLiteQuery created by SQLiteQueryDriver, and I see no evidence that there is an object pool or something going on here that might explain how a "new" SQLiteClosable is already closed. The fact that it is sporadic (meaning the same UI operations sometimes trigger the exception, but not always) suggests some sort of pool, race condition, or something...but I'm not sure where.

The code in question is from the LunchList tutorials out of my Android Programming Tutorials book. It's a bit spread out and not terribly suitable for posting directly in SO. You can download the code for that book from the above link if you want to take a look at it. I do not recall exactly which edition of the tutorial the student was working on at the time, though it was in the Tutorial 12-Tutorial 16 range. I was mostly hoping to run across somebody who had tripped over this problem before and had a likely culprit. I'm fairly certain my database is open.

HTC Desire :: Stock Phone Browser Force Closing / Whats Causing This - Fix It?

Jul 2, 2010

Really odd one this. It closes if I type a capital A. Nothing else. All other letters are fine.

The application Internet (process com.android.browser) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

I have factory reset, uninstalled everything, still the same. If I clear the cookies, cache, etc, and remove my homepage of google.co.uk, it seems fine. The T-Mobile default homepage works fine if I type a capital A. If I set Google.co.uk, and type a capital A, it force closes.

Hmm....and after a bit of digging....it only seems to do it on Google Mobile sites. Classic Google.com and .co.uk are fine. Google force loses, as does .com/m.

Anyone have the same issue, or know whats causing this?

Game :: Android Java.net.Unknown Host Exception

Jul 20, 2010

I have android code that uses a background process to routinely (e.g. hourly) connect to a content source on the web to check for updated content. As new users download the app and run it for the first time, it seems (and this is just a "seems at the moment) that in this first-run situation, because the DNS for our servers are not cached already on the device, those first series of connections fail with dreaded UnknownHostException: Host is unresolved. And of course, the application tries again later and (again, "it seems like") it is all working -- perhaps because the OS has had time to actually resolve the address. So, my question(s) are: (1) Do other Android developers see this behavior with their deployed applications as well? First time, a series of "host unresolved" issues that work themselves out later. (2) Does anyone have a better strategy for "warming up the DNS" so-to-speak so that the first real connections work? or perhaps do you just re-try with some back-off looping when you encounter this exception? I was contemplating having a separate thread that tries to fetch a small text file from our server and have it just loop until it gets it and maybe (not sure about this part) block the other outgoing network connections until it succeeds.

Now I come to class B where I will call this method like the below:

I was asked a question in an interview as follows:

Why does the method have a throws Exception in its declaration? Is it that on of the methods called in the implementation throws the base class exception? Also If we get a exception during calling the method (fileConnect( )) control goes to catch block. After executing catch where should the control go, what should be sent to base case?

Android :: Force Close Just Restarts App?

Feb 13, 2010

I've noticed that whenever I introduce some new awful bug to my app and it crashes, Android just keeps starting it up over and over again. I eventually have to hit the dial button on the phone just to make my app lose focus. I searched this group's posts and the developer documents.I can't find anything about this. Is this usual behavior? If so, is there some way to disable it? Maybe it's just my coming from a desktop background, but I kind of think that when something is closed, it should stay closed, especially if the reason it was closed was that it crashed. And of course, I hope my final app never force closes, but with all the different hardware you never know.

Android :: Davlik Bug - UNEXPECTED TOP-LEVEL EXCEPTION: Java.lang.IllegalArgumentException

May 10, 2009

I am attempting to integrate some previous libraries that we have within my new android project.

I have made several attempts including:

Importing the code as sub-projects (that are built using the android.jar)

Importing the code as jar files (from the built code)

Adding the files directly as part of my project

Reordering the dependencies

However for each one of these scenarios I keep getting the following exception thrown by the davlik compiler.

It is always picking the first class in the package (ie if I remove that class, it picks the next and so on).

It would appear to me that this is a compiler bug - somehow it's getting it's dependencies in a twist.

Anyone else experienced this? And/or have any ideas on how to get around this one?

Android : Need To Start Bluetooth Settings Activity Force Closes With Null Pointer Exception

Nov 19, 2010

I'm trying to bring up the standard window for Bluetooth Settings (with Device name, Discoverability etc). However, general approach with startActivity(intent) ends with NullPointerException pointing to BluetoothSettings.java onCreate:135. Checking with the Android code, I've found that at line 135 they get some extras from the intent. So I prepare the same extras (names I've found in android core BluetoothDevicePicker interface) and issue it -- the same effect with NullPointerException. Might be the wrongs names of the extras I prepare? So is there a way I can see those extras (with names especially) from the intent the system itself submits when I open Bluetooth Settings manually acting like a user. Code...
