I use google navigation which I think is a brilliant navigation system seeing as it's completely free! The only downside is that it doesn't pick-up speed cameras. Does anyone know of any good speed camera apps that can run in the background or in conjunction with google navigation?

Anyway to have the navigation application display speed? I have larger than factory tires/rims and my speedo is off by 6mph. I loved to see the speed on my storms garmin app.

I like all those high speed camera shoots and i was thinking if would it be possible to make an app to use the camera to shoot high speed videos. I am not thinking like professional high speed video (those go up to millions of fps) but more like up to 1000 or 500. The desire should be able to shoot hd 720p video (lets hope with the next update) and may be would be possible to to make lower resolution high speed videos. I think the cpu is enough, but would the camera be able?

That is odd because it doesn't seem like it would be that difficult to do, especially if Google Maps already gives turn-by-turn directions. I'm guessing it might have to do with the language or pronunciation of the streets. I don't mind using it in English, though.

View 3 Replies View RelatedApparently auto focus in a phone camera isn't all it's hyped up to be. To get faster performance (the time from pressing the shutter button to the picture being taken is usually slowed down by the camera trying to find focus in autofocus mode (and sometimes missing completely and giving up if the subject is dark or lack contrast). I'm not sure about all Android phones, but my Acer Liquid has a focus setting either 'infinity' or 'auto'. From what what I understand about photography, on a small lens such as on a camera phone, the DOF (Depth of Field) is very large, and when the focus is set to the hyperfocal length (the 'infinity' setting), everything from infinity to about 2.5 ft is in focus. I confirmed this with my phone (set focus to infinity, see what the closest thing that's in focus). So what this really means is for almost all regular picture-taking, it should be set to 'infinity' for faster performance, and only set to 'auto' when one needs to take pictures of objects closer than about 2.5 ft, like a 'macro' mode. So it would've actually made more sense if Android Camera app were to label the two settings '0-2.5 ft auto focus' and 2.5-infinity fixed focus'. If your camera has this setting, give it a try and see if it's snappier.

The next most relevant aspect is the ISO setting, but the Android SDK does not have a way to manipulate it. I wanted to put the google navigator icon (the blue arrow) on her home screen but could not find it anywhere in her apps. I did find the google navigation (map icon) app and set that up for her. So, my questions are: What is the difference between the two? How come I couldn't find the navigator app on her phone (on mine, it's under "programs")?

I found the camera on my old iPhone 3GS much better in this department (although the picture quality overall was not as good). Most of the people are clear, but usually someone is moving which leaves a big blur.Before people say it's camera shake, I know the difference between shake and shutter blur. It seems the shutter is staying open too long to allow enough light in for proper exposure.
View 15 Replies View RelatedWe planned a trip to Kemah Boardwalk and I thought this would be a perfect time to do a small review of the Evo. So here is what I experienced with the Evo 4G. Please bear in mind that my focus was to have fun and not make this as an in-depth review of the phone.
1. 4G Coverage: Although Sprint's maps says that on our area (Sugar Land, Missouri, and Stafford) it has almost complete 4G coverage. My tests from different part of the vicinity only shows mostly 3G connectivity. And if it does show 4G, I don't notice any major change in speed, then again, I haven't timed it so please bear in mind the word - "notice".
2. Navigation was excellent! I prefer Google Navigation then Sprint's because of the satellite viewing while navigating... Even full-fledged navigation devices do not have this capability! There were a few times that google navigation would give a longer/slower route, but so does all other GPS devices. Over all, I'm pretty impressed with Google Navigation!
3. For a phone's camera, this thing is impressive! It won't replace a regular point and shoot camera. But this camera is excellent for internet viewing. Reduce the size to 25% of it's original size and almost all it's image quality issues will be greatly reduced. Here are some pictures I took at Kemah (Please take note, the pictures have been reduced 25%):
4. Lastly - Battery life... The battery didn't last long for me, yes I did put brightness to auto-brightness, turned off 4G, GPS (When I wasn't using it) and wifi. It barely lasted 3 hours, good thing I got my Seidio 1750 mAh extended battery, and no, I didn't notice any major difference between the OEM battery and the extended battery. Again no scientific and in-depth review here. My focus is not to review this phone, but to have fun. My second battery pretty much held out till we got back home, with me posting on FB on transit.
Overall, I have not too much to complain about, I just found some solutions to my issues. The only solution I haven't found yet, is the 4G coverage. From Sprint's map, it says we're fully covered, but as I go from place to place, the 4G coverage was spotty at best.
I have tried many of those camera apps from market, like camera 360, but non of them can adjust shutter speed/exposure way I wanted. Say, I want a long exposure for night photo. For example I would like input exposure value to app, so that it would expose photo for 10 seconds.know app to change exposure/shutter speed?

I really like this application for iPhone, but it doesn't seem to have an Android port. It seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. It has a database of speed limits and notifies you when your phone's GPS reports you have exceeded those limits. The database is user-updated so it should be fairly accurate and current. It also has a really classy GUI.
Is there anything currently in the Android market that can help me? I've tried Trapster, but it doesn't have the functions I'm looking for. It also was pretty annoying as it constantly went off for every potential copper hiding place.
Is there an app that can test a WiFi speed like the iphone version of speedtest.net. I have this application for 3G connection but I want to be able to test WiFi connection?

Does anyone know of one that is GPS enabled, and tracks the speed limit by your gps location? I'm trying to use Google Maps Navigation from within my application. I've found on the net it can be done with this intent : Intent i = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse("geo:"+lat +","+lng)); where lat and lng are the latitude and longitude. Unfortunately, I get a SecurityException :'(. Can someone tell me which permission I should ask ?

I like no-map Garmin GPS handy navigators, so I created software, that has most functions of such navigator. TripComputer records tracks of your trips and stores your interesting waypoints. You can view them on map view, see stats like distances, speed, time, altitute graph, bearing, azimuth, and many more. Also, if you have internet connection, you can send your selected waypoints and find waypoints sent by others,to use in you own trips.
At this time, TripComputer does not use maps - because in off-road areas, maps are useless. However, topo maps will be supported in future versions. Also, I'm working on GPX files and some geocaching support.
Is there any way to put a shortcut on your homescreen that would open Google Nav with directions to that point?
IE putting an icon on the home screen that says "Home", tap on it, and Google Nav opens up with directions to your home that you've previously programed.

I made the switch to Google Navigation after using Sprint's Navigation application for a few years on my previous BlackBerry and love it! It's my primary GPS application. So, here's my query. While I was tinkering with it today, I noticed the option to choose an alternate route. We are going to be driving to LA a little later this evening and the default route Google Navigation chose was longer in both time and distance compared to one of the alternate routes (total of three routes). The default route gave said it is 332 miles and 6hr/9min. When I pulled up alternate routes, the second option was 325 miles and 5hr/49min. The third route was over 7 hours long. Do you guys know what methodology Google Navigation uses to pick the default route? Why the longer route?
