Android :: Some Users Can't See My Location Limited Droid App In Market / Why?
Jun 27, 2010
I have published an app on Android Market which is limited to Norway. I'm able to find and install it myself from Market, as can several other Norwegian users. A colleague (Android 2.1) and a friend (Android 1.6), on the other hand, cannot find it. They both have phones bought in Norway, with SIM cards from Norwegian providers.
Why are some Norwegian users able to find it, and others not? How does Google determine the location of Market users?
The app works on Android phones with v1.5+.

We have an app that needs to be distributed to a large but limited audience.We are doing this through our own web site.Now that AT&T will not allow any downloads to the Flip except through the Android market, we need to have the capability to have a limited distribution on the Market.Can this be done on the Android market?Will the Android market include this in the future?

Haven't seen this posted yet so here it is. 3d launcher 2 for non root users running OTA 2.1. Search for "Clockwork mod Launcher" Or "launcher 2" on the market. It will cost you but the devs deserve the donate cause it's not an easy task to get a working 3d launcher on droid let alone one that runs good.

EDIT: I only watch in HQ. but that shouldn't be an issue with 3G speeds.
I'm on Verizon 3G with 700-900kb DL with the most recent version of the "official" Youtube app and the video will take 30 seconds to load, play for 30 seconds, load for 30 seconds, and play 30 seconds and on and on...
I even pause the video for 2 minutes and when I press play it still only plays like 30-60 seconds and stops to load.
I can play flash videos and they will only load once and play right through to the end but with this app it seems like they are purposely loading the videos in 30 second increments to discourage watching videos on 3G.
Is everyone else having this issue? Is there a better youtube app in the market?

Is there any way that a webpage can make a request for the users location from the android / iphone device ? Since all I need is the users location, I am trying to figure out if there is anyway I can bypass developing a native app and use some nifty html5 call to just get the users location so all a user would need to do is visit my webpage and provide permission to access his/her location?

I have a quick development question. I have an application that displays an image. You can pinch zoom/move the image around easy enough. What I'm wondering is how would I go about mapping the location of the users touch to the coordinates on the image itself, and not the screen?

I've had more than one user say they have trouble when they "upgrade" new versions of my app in Android Market. One woman says it takes her several "days" to successfully do it (I presume that means multiple attempts spread out over time).Can this be on my end? I upgrade my database on each rev - basically I retreive the user data and stick it in the new database that ships with my app. But I think the complaint is about something different. Has anyone else received comments about anything similar? I am concerned people uninstall my app just because of this issue,

I want all the users of my application to rate it in the Market. I want to place a small TextView in my application which says: "Please rate my application" but this TextView should only be there if the user has not already rated it. How can I realize this?

I am getting several weird emails a day from users who have clicked on the 'send email to developer' link in the Market app where either the mail has not contents or is just rubbish such as zbxnbcvnxbnb. Are other devs getting similar and is this just users typing rubbish accidentally or is this another problem with the market interface?

I have an application published in marketplace and its not updating the active users/number of downloads on the phone display or the developer console. My other application appears to be fine. Anyone else seeing this? Also when the application was uploaded over the weekend there were issues with setting the location targeting. I could not restrict it to US only.

I've looked all over this forum and others and haven't found anyone with this issue. Got my Droid Eris last week and love it so far. When I use Wi-Fi it finds my router and connects with no problems. I open browser and can go to Google.com, do searches from there, etc. and everything works fine and pages load quickly as long as I stay on Google.com. But when I try any other site they either never load ("web page not available") or they take several minutes to load.
Browser works fine on all sites when on 3G. I tried Wi-Fi with 3G turned-on and turned-off, but same results. Tried clearing browser cache, deleted cookies, etc.
I'm stumped...I can't think of anything that would prevent non-Google sites from working only when I'm using Wi-Fi.

i've had my phone about 3 weeks now. up until last week, the htc weather widget would update to my current location. when i was home, it would show the town i live in. i also had the google internet option to use my location and this would also work perfectly until last sunday.now, the weather location was stuck on miami no matter where i went (as far north as west palm beach) and the internet shows up 'location unavailable'. i have found out that the gps is picking up where i am in goggle maps but it seems that the cell towers are not as far as weather and internet location are concerned. i have tried all of the obvious settings.i did a factory reset and now my weather says ft lauderdale which is closer to me but still not my town. it does not update (manually either) as i move. the internet location still says location unavailable although for a fleeting minute after the factory reset, it DID locate me....then it was gone so i called verizon, they didn't have a clue. then i took it to the store and it turns out EVERY phone the tech tried in the store had the same problem, including his. he told me it was a google problem and there was nothing he could do about it. i felt if i tried explaining how that would make it a verizon problem as well, it would be a losing battle

I've been pulling my hair out trying to achieve smooth scrolling in an OpenGL-based app on Eclair. It seems that no matter what I do, I cannot get more than 36 events per second (the rest is sent in history data which is useless in my case). This happens on both the emulator and the Motorola Milestone.Is this a hardcoded limit or am I doing something wrong? I'm implementing onTouchEvent on the activity and recording how many events are received per second and then send that info through Log.v to Eclipse. I also tried implementing onTouchEvent on the view instead of the activity and the results are the same.

How should I go about identifying an android user to a server.
Should I get the IMSI number and some salting algorithm?
Considering androids space and performance limitations is there a library that isn't too heavy that I can use to do the calculation?

We were told that, as of Android 1.6, background processes were put in a Linux process scheduling class that limited how much CPU they would use. A few weeks ago, I ran a benchmark test that seemed to validate this claim.I have run more tests, and I am no longer confident in my earlier conclusion. I can get a background process to significantly impact the foreground process, more than would seem to be possible if the background process was, indeed, CPU-limited.

We want to develop an application which should be the only one our users should use. So we need to PREVENT them using other applications. (Mainly to make the maintenance support possible - we plan to buy at about 1000 phones, so the maintenance is tough task!) Is there any way to restrict the users?
For instance, is ADW Launcher able to do such things? Or is it possible to achieve this by coding our specific replacement of Home Launcher? And what about using some ASE scripts?
I am a beginner to Android OS, please do not assume any specific knowledge in your possible answers.

I have a listview with two labels, title and subtitle. I want to have dark and light background as user options. Title has textAppearanceMedium and subtitle has textAppearanceSmall. I want the style, MyTheme.Dark to have white color text and MyTheme.Light to have black color text. Is there a way to define multiple textAppearance attribute for the same TextView widget?

@color/black

@color/black

@color/black

@color/white

--cannot put textAppearance here since it is different for title and subtitle

I've seen a lot of applications that utilize this view, but in my region (Israel) it seems to show a different view than what the Google Maps application shows. Google Maps shows everything you would expect from Google Maps except street view. However map view does not. It never shows streets and details, just a big blotch of gray. Satellite view works, but not with the best resolution the Maps application offers.Can anyone point me to documentation of this matter?

I'm new to Android platform but not new to software development. We want (in our company) to create Android software to compliment our truck management software. Basically, it will do couple very specific tasks.
a. Send GPS updates to server.
b. Receive trip information.
c. Send pickup/delivery confirmation to server.
After evaluating i.e. platform and Windows phone 7 platform we came to conclusion that only Android has multitasking that works for us. So, Android it is but I have some specific questions.
1. Data plan we want to use will be very limited. Probably 5M/mo and no voice/text. I figured 5x1024x1024 = 5242280 bytes will give me 1k per transmission every 15 minutes (3000 transmissions per mo). It will leave 2M for other stuff that will happens every couple of days. Does my math look OK or there is lot of "waste" traffic? Our server going to be XML SOAP and messages sent will be just Lon/Lat in XML package. 1K will be OK? If I just calculate bytes it will be even less but I wonder if there is "minimum" packet size, etc. Any insight on this data limitation appreciated.
2. Because of #1 we need to "lock" device somehow so there is no other software that uses network. Possible? If so, what do I need to look for? I found already created app - firewall and it says phone has to be rooted for that.
3. Receiving trip information. What's the best way to accomplish that given my situation? Should I run some kind of listener? Will my phone have IP address or something? Or should I get small text plan and use that for this specific functionality? Can I receive text message in my own application?
So, as you see we trying to shrink $80/mo service to $15/mo service that will do big savings to our company but not sure if it's all possible with constraints we have. Also, we may just give discounts to drivers who have Android phone and will install our app but we don't count on that.

My droid incredible seems to be limited to 2046 friends on facebook in my people's list. It seems that new friends aren't added anymore automatically (that is synced up) ... is there such a limit? my people's list is a mix between my google contacts and facebook contacts (most of them linked so I can add phone numbers, etc.) I have no such limit with my google contacts. my contact storage is at about 50MB right now.

I'm developing a mapping app using Eclipse 3.5.I'm setting the minimum update period with the LocationManager's requestLocationUpdates method, via a configuration activity. When I set the property I see in Logcat that the system process sets the value OK.When I actually send a new location from the DDMS emulator control and the location changes on the map view, I see that the system process then sets the minimum time to zero.Below is a capture of the system's log messages. You can see that I'm setting the period to 32 seconds, then 16, then, after I've sent a simulated location change the system sets it to zero.The map responds to location changes to location changes instantly even if they are sent only a couple of seconds apart.
