I just signed up for these forums because soon I will be an HTC Desire owner in Canada. Having never owned a smartphone before I do have a few questions. The plan I intend on signing up for is the Telus Student 40 and that will come with only 100mb of data. Now I don't see myself being too data using heavy so I feel like I will be able to live with it. However I do have some questions regarding my data consumption.
1. Is it possible to completely stop all data usage by somehow disabling the data connection if I find myself reaching my limit?
2. What are ways to track my data usage to make sure I don't use too much data?
3. What are good ways to conserve data usage? I'm getting the feeling that there are some applications that will constantly be sending data back and forth updating themselves, is it possible to have these applications but stop them from constantly updating and only have them update when I want to access the application?.........

So I've had my DHD for 3 days, done a little 3G browsing the usual stuff Facebook, emails etc., but nothing more as I used my home WiFi for the widget and app downloads. But today I got a text from Vodafone saying I was near my internet usage limit for the Month! Within 3 days!? I have a 750MB limit, which the chap in the shop assured me was enough to keep me happy as 'no one ever goes over that.'
I was happy with that even though my previous contract was unlimited internet as he said it would be ok. All I can think of is the email syncing, so turned that off. But what else could be causing me to go over the 750MB limit within 3 days? Surely thats a huge amount to be used?

Maybe a rookie question, but here goes.I've seen a lot of posts about where to find an app/widget that allows you to switch between 3G and 2G. My question is: why would I want to do this? Does switching to 2G lessen the amount of data usage (which could be important, considering I'm on AT&T's 200 MB plan)? Or is there some other benefit/reason for doing this?Related: I have the SwitchPro widget, which has a 3G-2G switch available -- does this mean I am able to switch if I want to?

I want to make a trial version, where the application functionality works a limited amount of times. The consumer will then be given the option to buy the complete version on Android market. How can I implement that?
I could write some info to the sdcard after each start of the app and then read that info on the next start or reinstallation of the app. But would that work? This thread
http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa... :
says that there's no 100% sure way to keep someone from reusing a trial version. That seems strange. It is possible to make a functionable trial version in J2ME with the RecordStore class. Why shouldn't this be possible in Android?

I was wondering if the weather app that Moto has built in still uses the same amount of battery/data regardless of whether or not it is on the home screen. I took the widget off the home screen and stopped the weather process and it just comes back anyway. So the weather process is still running in the background. I'd like to use the weather widget, but don't want to deal with battery drain. Bad enough my phone has reset itself twice in the last 24 hours.

I've looked all over this forum and others and haven't found anyone with this issue. Got my Droid Eris last week and love it so far. When I use Wi-Fi it finds my router and connects with no problems. I open browser and can go to Google.com, do searches from there, etc. and everything works fine and pages load quickly as long as I stay on Google.com. But when I try any other site they either never load ("web page not available") or they take several minutes to load.
Browser works fine on all sites when on 3G. I tried Wi-Fi with 3G turned-on and turned-off, but same results. Tried clearing browser cache, deleted cookies, etc.
I'm stumped...I can't think of anything that would prevent non-Google sites from working only when I'm using Wi-Fi.

Has anyone been able to adjust the amount of rings on their phone? My phone rings about 6 times before it goes to voicemail but my girlfriend's phone rings only 4 times. I brought both numbers over from T-Mobile where they each rang about 4 times but now w/Verizon mine went up to 6. Tried calling tech support about it and they said there wasn't a setting for this on the phone itself and they gave me an answer like some phones just tend to connect to the network faster.

Does anyone know how to change the amount of times their phone rings before the caller is sent to voicemail? When I call my phone from another phone it only rings four to five times before it goes to voicemail. However, when I call my wife's eris it rings six to seven times before sending to voicemail. My phone is on v3 leak and my wifes is a stock 1.5.This is really frustrating because it already takes at least two rings from the other end before my phone even acknowledges someone is calling...and yes i've changed my slot cycle down to zero...so by the time it starts ringing the ringtone only lasts about five to ten secs.not enough time at all to even try to answer.

I am building an application for Android (1.5) that, after quering a webservice, shows to the user a big amount of data that should be displayed in a "grid" or "table" style.
I must show a result of about 7 columns and 50 rows (for example a customer list with names, addresses, telephone number, sales amount last year and so).
Obviously, the 7 columns will not fix in the screen and I would like the user would be able to scroll up/down and LEFT/RIGHT (important because of the number of columns) to explore the grid results.
cell selection level is NOT necessary, as much I would need row selection level.
What is the best approach to get this interface element? Listview / GridView / TableLayout?

I'm new to Android platform but not new to software development. We want (in our company) to create Android software to compliment our truck management software. Basically, it will do couple very specific tasks.
a. Send GPS updates to server.
b. Receive trip information.
c. Send pickup/delivery confirmation to server.
After evaluating i.e. platform and Windows phone 7 platform we came to conclusion that only Android has multitasking that works for us. So, Android it is but I have some specific questions.
1. Data plan we want to use will be very limited. Probably 5M/mo and no voice/text. I figured 5x1024x1024 = 5242280 bytes will give me 1k per transmission every 15 minutes (3000 transmissions per mo). It will leave 2M for other stuff that will happens every couple of days. Does my math look OK or there is lot of "waste" traffic? Our server going to be XML SOAP and messages sent will be just Lon/Lat in XML package. 1K will be OK? If I just calculate bytes it will be even less but I wonder if there is "minimum" packet size, etc. Any insight on this data limitation appreciated.
2. Because of #1 we need to "lock" device somehow so there is no other software that uses network. Possible? If so, what do I need to look for? I found already created app - firewall and it says phone has to be rooted for that.
3. Receiving trip information. What's the best way to accomplish that given my situation? Should I run some kind of listener? Will my phone have IP address or something? Or should I get small text plan and use that for this specific functionality? Can I receive text message in my own application?
So, as you see we trying to shrink $80/mo service to $15/mo service that will do big savings to our company but not sure if it's all possible with constraints we have. Also, we may just give discounts to drivers who have Android phone and will install our app but we don't count on that.

I have decided to go to a smartphone on 13th June when my present contract expires. My Query is, I am in the U.K. and if I look at contracts for the iphone they normally include unlimited Wifi and 1Gb of wireless data, whereas the Desire seems to come with only 500Mb of wireless.
I would much prefer to get a Desire, but I am concerned that I could be lumbering myself with excess charges if I go over the 500Mb limit.
I have never had a phone with an Internet connection before so I'm sure that there will be a lot of playing going on at least to start with.

Got my phone a couple weeks ago and absolutely love it! Problem is I'm playing with it too much and already got a text saying I am at 65% of my data usage plan well before the billing cycle will be complete. How can I turn off completely/minimize the data stream? So far I've done (Home> All programs Tab> Wireless & networks and uncheck the box for Mobile Networks) and (Settings> Accounts and Sync> Background data "Applications can sync, send, and receive data at any time"). I wanna just be able to use it at WiFi spots so I don't accrue any fees.

The database of my application need to be filled with a lot of data, so during onCreate(), it's not only some create table sql instructions, there is a lot of inserts. The solution I chose is to store all this instructions in a sql file located in res/raw and which
is loaded with Resources.openRawResource(id).
It works well but I face to encoding issue, I have some accentuated caharacters in the sql file which appears bad in my application. This
my code to do this : Code...
The solution I found to avoid this is to load the sql instructions from a huge static final string instead of a file, and all accentuated characters appears well.
But Isn't there a more elegant way to load sql instructions than a big static final String attribute with all sql instructions?

Just wondering if anyone has found a good app to keep track of data usage. Curious because I know Verizon only allows 5gigs and want to keep track of my usage to better manage it. I use a lot of data because im tethering my droid to my desktop for internet - saves me $35 a month, no more giving comcast money for internet.

I am trying to write a streaming application.I have my own decoder and I am playing PCM audio using AudioTrack. At any point in time I want to know how much data is buffered with the device. I want to use this so that if the data with the device go below a level, I want to go into a buffering mode where I will buffer 2-3 seconds of data before continuing playback again. Can someone please tell me how to do this?

From one activity, I want to pass a lot of data (about 1MB of Strings).I tried sticking it in Intent.putExtra(ArrayList<String>), but if I put in too much data, I get "FAILED BINDER TRANSACTION".What's the easiest way? I don't want to publish a service, or use the file system. I really want a pipe that can write data from one end and read it from the other end. I can handle the case where the starter Activity dies while the "startee" activity is trying to read from the pipe.

I will be making a mobile application in Android. My application is like Google Map's Get Direction feature, but a lot more complex, so I need to store data about points in the map. So I'm worried that SQLite may not be able to handle these large amount of data(or considering the limited storage of the phone). I have no background in SQLite so please bear with me.

Under 1.5, I can't see the new videos of my subscriptions on the YouTube app. Is this just a problem under 1.5 and does 2.1 fix this? Also, the YouTube app only shows like 15 of my subscriptions.

It is absolutely ridiculous that the eris can't play 95% of the online videos I want to watch.
Is youtube seriously it? WTF!? No fox.com, NBC, adult swim, comedy central?
I had a Motorola flip phone that could play almost any video, including from the above sites. I thought I was upgrading when I bought the eris. Am I missing something?
