Android :: Share An Object Between A Running Service And Activity?
Aug 8, 2010
I have an API Object that I made, and I would like to share it between a running Service and various Activities in my app, almost like if I was to make the class static. How could I go about sharing the created object between the two?

I want to create an app that contains a Service S and an Activity A. The Service S is responsible for preprocessing, such as preparing the data shown on the UI of the Activity A, before the Activity A gets invoked.I want to be able to invoke the Service S from outside the package, say from another Android app's Activity class B, do the preprocessing, and then when the data is ready, invoke Activity A. What is the best way to share data between the Service S and Activity A?How can the external activity B communicate with the Service S to determine if it has completed with all its preprocessing, and the Activity A is ready to be invoked?

I'm trying to create a program with a service that runs every 10 seconds, puts the camera preview, taking a picture and then leaving the user to continue his work (closing down). Currently I have two problems:
1. After I'm taking the picture, the preview still there. There's no function like close() to return to the previous activity. How can I return to the previous activity?
2. I'm trying to run the above described activity from the run() function (from the timer class that execute the run() function every 10 seconds). When I do that, a runtime exception is raised. But when I start the above described activity from a button clicked (not from the timer) it works fine.

I have been looking for this for a while but I can't find any way of doing it. A contrived example would be a service that simply displays the name of the current running activity as an Ongoing Notification. For instance, when the user is reading a particular email, the name of the activity (hopefully the email title!) would appear in the notifications window and when the user switches to read a text message, the notification would change to show the name of the new activity. Is there a way to do this in Android?

I've created my first service, and it's all gone fine, except when the main activity is stopped. What I want is for a user action (button press etc) to start the service, which it does. Then I want the user, some time later, to press another button to stop the service. Which it does. But if the main activity loses focus (i.e. I go to the home screen) when I return to the activity it has no knowledge of the service anymore - even though the service is still running. When the activity resumes, how do I find out a) if the service is running, and if so b) re-bind to it, so that I can then stop it and collect the data I'm after.

I have an application in which there will be a service continuously running in background and on certain conditions service should call an activity or pop-up a dialog. I think this is possible. The question is, in case device keyguard gets on say after 2 minutes of idle time then will the service continue running in background. And what will happen when the condition of opening pop-up or Activity is reached.

I currently have a service called ConnectionService. It instantiates a Connection object that gives me access to a controller of TCP.
I start the service from a splash screen activity, which sends and intent and starts my "main" activity once a connection has been established. In the "main" activity, I can access my Connection object and communicate with the controller. However, when I start a new activity from the "main" activity and bind to the service, I get a NullPointerException when I try to call methods in the ConnectionService.

I have followed the Local Service example provided by Google, but my Context::bindService(...) always returns false and there is Service Connection::onServiceConnected is also never called. I understand that Context::bind Service() returns immediately, but my Service Connection object is never triggered. I don't know if these apply My activity is running inside a tabHost and I was wondering if that can affect service binding in any way. The Service itself may have a problem, but I can call start service to the same service with the same Intent and it works as expected. Does anyone have experience with this? Please help me out.

I want to get the current focus view in my Service to check the view is a EditText and append some texts in it (for all EditTexts, not only in my application).
I found some methods to do this, like Activity.getCurrentFocus() and Windows.getCurrentFocus(). But these methods are used in a Activity.
How can I use these methods in a Service? Or is there another way to do?

However, I need to pass some objects from MyActivity1 to MyActivity2 --
I see there is an Intent.putExtra() for all the basic types, and I even see a Bundle which is a collection of basic types, but how can I pass a generic "Object" to MyActivity2 ?

This is a followup to this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3897176/findviewbyid-in-a-subclassed-surfaceview-throwing-runtimeexception Based on Romain Guy's feedback (which I'll accept shortly as it is a solution), I'd like to obtain the calling Activity from within the View, so that I can use it to obtain the desired Text View resource. I don't see any methods in View that return Activity. What is the proper way to do this? Or is there a better alternative for working with TextViews from within another View context. Basically, I am calling setContentView(R.layout.xxx) in onCreate() (as usual), so I don't really have a way to pass in references to additional TextViews unless I awkwardly retrieve the View after setContentView and then make calls on it.

I have read posts on passing arrays from and to activities, but I am confused as to how I would do it for my specific case.
I have an array of objects called DaysWeather (a DaysWeather[] array) where the objects have several String attributes as well as a bitmap attribute. I read somewhere that you have to make it serializable or parceable or something, but it seems messy at first glance.
Could someone lead me in the right direction?
Is there a simple way to do this?

I created an application which enables the user to set whether he wants to receive notification while the application runs in background mode. If the notifications are enabled an activity should be started (the dialog should appear on the screen).
I tried to enabled it the following way:
CODE:...........
This is the method from main activity. When onPause() is executed isRunningInBackground is set true.
When I tried to debug it when the main application was running in the background the line
startActivity(intent) had no effect (the activity didn't appear).
Does anyone know how to midify the logic in order to start an activity from the main activity when the main activity is running in the background (after onPause() is called)?
