Android :: Pop Up Dialog Or Activity From Service Running In Background When Keyguard Locked?

Nov 19, 2010

I have an application in which there will be a service continuously running in background and on certain conditions service should call an activity or pop-up a dialog. I think this is possible. The question is, in case device keyguard gets on say after 2 minutes of idle time then will the service continue running in background. And what will happen when the condition of opening pop-up or Activity is reached.

Android :: Start Activity When Main Activity Is Running In Background

Jan 10, 2010

I created an application which enables the user to set whether he wants to receive notification while the application runs in background mode. If the notifications are enabled an activity should be started (the dialog should appear on the screen).

I tried to enabled it the following way:

CODE:...........

This is the method from main activity. When onPause() is executed isRunningInBackground is set true.
When I tried to debug it when the main application was running in the background the line

startActivity(intent) had no effect (the activity didn't appear).

Does anyone know how to midify the logic in order to start an activity from the main activity when the main activity is running in the background (after onPause() is called)?

Android :: Running Background Service That Would Disable SMS

I'd like to include a feature in my application that would include a running background service that would disable SMS, if certain conditions were met (location for instance). Is there a way I can intercept the user wanting to open any SMS app and block it? Would a Broadcast Receiver be able to do the trick? Maybe a different way to go about this?

Android :: Memory Leak - Service Stays Running In Background

Oct 15, 2009

I start a Service from an Activity, the user presses back, the Activity goes away and the Service stays running in the background. However the activity (and it's views) still stay in memory. I tested this with cupcake and G1. To reproduce I've made a simple program.

The activity:
package com.android.service_test;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.os.Bundle;
public class StartService extends Activity {
/** Called when the activity is first created. */
@Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
startService(new Intent(getApplication(), RunningService.class));
} }

Android :: Activity.finish() With AsyncTask Still Running In Background?

Apr 28, 2010

What happens on Activity.finish() with an AsyncTask still running in background?

Does it just pop the Activity off the Activity Stack, but wait to destroy the Activity object until the AsyncTask fully completes (since the AsyncTask is an inner class of my Activity)?

Also, would it act any differently if the AsyncTask were a public, non-inner class that held no references to the instance of the Activity?

Android :: Update Information In Activity From Background Service?

Mar 18, 2010

I am trying to create a simple Android application that has a ActivityList of information, when the application starts, I plan to start a Service that will be constantly calculating the data (it will be changing) and I want the ActivityList to be in sync with the data that the service is calculating for the life of the app. How can I set up my Activity to be listening to the Service? Is this the best way to approach this problem? For example, if you imagine a list of stock prices - the data would be being changed regularly and need to be in sync with the (in my case) Service that is calculating/fetching the data constantly.

Android :: Running Activity From Local Service

Sep 13, 2010

I'm trying to create a program with a service that runs every 10 seconds, puts the camera preview, taking a picture and then leaving the user to continue his work (closing down). Currently I have two problems:

1. After I'm taking the picture, the preview still there. There's no function like close() to return to the previous activity. How can I return to the previous activity?

2. I'm trying to run the above described activity from the run() function (from the timer class that execute the run() function every 10 seconds). When I do that, a runtime exception is raised. But when I start the above described activity from a button clicked (not from the timer) it works fine.

Android :: Way To Find Out Current Running Activity From A Service?

Aug 4, 2009

I have been looking for this for a while but I can't find any way of doing it. A contrived example would be a service that simply displays the name of the current running activity as an Ongoing Notification. For instance, when the user is reading a particular email, the name of the activity (hopefully the email title!) would appear in the notifications window and when the user switches to read a text message, the notification would change to show the name of the new activity. Is there a way to do this in Android?

Android :: How To Find Service Running When Activity Resumes?

Dec 9, 2009

I've created my first service, and it's all gone fine, except when the main activity is stopped. What I want is for a user action (button press etc) to start the service, which it does. Then I want the user, some time later, to press another button to stop the service. Which it does. But if the main activity loses focus (i.e. I go to the home screen) when I return to the activity it has no knowledge of the service anymore - even though the service is still running. When the activity resumes, how do I find out a) if the service is running, and if so b) re-bind to it, so that I can then stop it and collect the data I'm after.

Android :: Activity Which Downloads Data In Background With Service - Doesn't Get Destroyed On Hitting Back Button

Nov 9, 2010

I need to develop an application with downloads the data at the background and update about the progress in the front.

I guess this can be achieved using services and activity and passing data in between the. But, what I need to do is even if I hit back button and then start the activity again. It should check if the service is running or not. If service is not running it should start one else it should display the data from running service.

Something like music player where music is played by a service at a background and activity displays the information. Even on browsing through other activities of the application or hitting back, state of the music player is maintained.
