Android :: Serializable Object In Intent Returning As String

Jun 16, 2010

In my application, I am trying to pass a serializable object through an intent to another activity. The intent is not entirely created by me, it is created and passed through a search suggestion.

In the content provider for the search suggestion, the object is created and placed in the SUGGEST_COLUMN_INTENT_EXTRA_DATA column of the MatrixCursor. However, when in the receiving activity I call getIntent().getSerializableExtra(SearchManager.EXTRA_DATA_KEY), the returned object is of type String and I cannot cast it into the original object class.

I tried making a parcelable wrapper for my object that calls out.writeSerializable(...) and use that instead but the same thing happened.

The string that is returned is like a generic Object toString(), i.e. com.foo.yak.MyAwesomeClass@4350058, so I'm assuming that toString() is being called somewhere where I have no control.

Some of my code

CODE:.........

This is in the activity that receives the search suggestion:

Android :: Returning From HTTP Intent.ACTION_VIEW

Mar 23, 2009

I have an application that needs to have a user visit a web page to authorize it. After spending time in the Browser the user should return the my application.

Currently, I'm launching the Browser with:

CODE:................

After using the browser, I can go back home and launch my application, which stacks a new Activity on top of the previous stack of Activities that were being used in the application. For example. If the user launches the app, they have Activity A in the stack. From there we navigate to Activity B which then launches the Browser. Then, the next time we enter the app, we launch Activity A, which is pushed onto the stack that already contains an A and B.

My question is then, how can I just go back to the previous stack? Basically, do I have to create a new Activity? Is there a better way to launch the Browser, and then come back to my application?

Also, I've been using the Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK when I start the Browser activity so that my app stays running.

Android :: Class That Turns That An XML String Into Java Object - ClassNotFoundException

So I ran into a problem today while working on my Android program. I have a class that turns that an XML string into a Java object (third party) and it works fine in as a regular java project but on Android I get this weird error:

CODE:.......

I hide my application name and my package for obvious reasons but I was wondering if anyone has ever encountered problems like this. Class is in the correct package, which is a library I have added. Other classes that I reference before are there and those can be made. Are there any other reasons a ClassNotFound Exception is thrown?

Android :: Intent Object Not Triggering Filter

Jun 25, 2010

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding how Intents and intent-filters work, but it seems to me that this should be a strait-forward case. However it's not working. Here is the Intent I'm sending:
Intent i = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW);
i.setType("vnd.android.cursor.item/vnd.connectsy.event");
startActivity(i);
And here is the intent-filter:
<activity android:name=".events.EventView">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.VIEW" />
<data android:mimeType="vnd.android.cursor.item/vnd.connectsy.event" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>

And finally, the error I'm receiving:
android.content.ActivityNotFoundException: No Activity found to handle Intent { act=android.intent.action.VIEW typ=vnd.android.cursor.item/vnd.connectsy.event }

Android :: How To Pass An Object To An Activity Via Intent.putExtra?

Aug 7, 2009

I am developing an app that connects to a server. For that connection I created a class Client that maintains info about the connection . My app consists of several Activities and each of that Activity needs access to the Client object to communicate to the server. 1) Can I put somewhere the Client object so that all Acitvities have an access to it? 2) If not I would probably need to pass the object to each Activity via Intent.putExtra(). But putExtra doesn't accept Object as an argument. It only accepts several types like int, long, String etc. So how can I pass an object to another Activity?

I have two questions:

Is there a way to serialize the object directly into the database. Is that the best way to do it or should I Write the object out to a formatting String and put it in the database that way and then parse it back out
Write each member to the database with a field that is unique to each object.

Android :: Bundles And Serializable Objects - What Is Actually Stored?

Mar 24, 2009

was wondering about the behavior of Bundles and serializable objects. If I put a serializable object into a bundle, what is serialized then, the reference to the object or the object itself? I always assumed that the object itself would be serialized to a byte stream when calling putExtra() and re-created from that representation when calling getSerializableExtra(), but I recently stumbled upon a piece of code that put an entire view into a Bundle in thread A, retrieved it from that bundle in thread B, performed a modification on it and this modification actually became visible. This can only happen if the reference to that view was stored, not the view itself, right? Otherwise, the modification had been applied to a copy of that view and would be meaningless.

Android :: Java Datetime Values From String To Long To String

Oct 1, 2010

In Android, capturing date from datepicker and storing as string in sqlite. Sorting by date doesn't work because they're strings (unless I'm doing it wrong.I've googled this issue for ~5 days, and it looks like there should be a way to capture the date from the date picker, convert it to a Long, store it in sqlite as a Long, select and sort on the Long date value, then convert the Long back to a "mm/dd/yyyy" string for display. I've tried various combinations of parse statements, Date, FormatDate, etc. with no luck at all.On activity start, get today's date and display it in button which calls the datepicker.Capture new date from datepicker (if one is entered), save it as a long to sqlite.On opening an activity showing a listview of records, select from sqlite with orderby on date (Long), convert Long to "mm/dd/yyyy" string for display in ListView.
