Android :: Peer To Peer Phone Application?
Sep 24, 2009
I am with a group of college students making a multiplayer game as a class project on the Android platform for the G1. Our primary goal is to allow multiple phones (or for the sake of initial testing, a phone and an emulator on a PC) to communicate with one another. Our game is turn based, and we've been looking into TCP/IP and VNC proxy servers to transfer data between the game clients on each phone, but none of them seem particularly simple to implement. We've been through many articles documenting how difficult peer-to-peer connections are on the Android platform. What would some viable network protocols to use for the sake of our project and how should we go about setting them up?

Is it possible to set up Android in ad-hoc peer-to-peer wifi mode? For example, I would like to have one phone broadcast a message, and have all peers in the network receive the broadcast, without having a server. I would like to use wifi since bluetooth range is more limited.

Is there anyone using git in such a fashion? I would like to distribute some multimedia content from a server to some Android remote devices. I would like them sending back a log file with device usage statistics (provided by an android app I will write). The server could be anything but I would prefer a linux box. I thought that since git handle and sych only differences between files, It would be a nice tool for this purpose and I would have content revision history as a bonus. I need some piece of advice on how the repositories architecture could be organized: does It have to be a star topology or something different? The remote end of the sistem don't need any interactivity, in other words the remote git repository could pull and push whatever It needs to, autonomously and automatically.
UPDATE: I've found here on SO the author of git internals (I'm downloading It right now), Scott Chacon talking about the architecture I would like to implement.
UPDATE 2: OK I read the chapter about "Non-SCM uses of Git" and here is what the author says about a Peer to Peer CDN:.....

Is there a voice / messaging app that will work via a wifi connection WITHOUT the need for an Internet connection? For example, two people with phones connected to the same router over wifi, but NO ACCESS to the Internet. I'm assuming apps like Skype would require both devices to be able to communicate with the Skype server to initiate the call, but might allow peer-to-peer afterwards.
I am not interested in making calls or texts to people outside of the wifi network. Does such an app exist?

I have a Motorola Droid X with PDAnet (2.42 installed on my computer). I am able to browse the internet and play some online games just fine, but if I open my Ares P2P program (on my computer), I am unable to stay connected to my phone. PDAnet Desktop just disconnects without any error messages. Does PDAnet block this type of software, or do I have something misconfigured? Or should I just use a different P2P program?

I am writing a proxy in Android. I want to know, how one may detect if the server or client has closed its socket? I am using pre-NIO sockets. It should be noted that, the YouTube App will connect with my Proxy server (I have installed proxydroid) and then data will pass between YouTube App and Youtube Server through my proxy.
I have used read() method for reading. When I am reading (with read() ) as a client (from the server) if I get -1, does it mean that the server has closed the socket?
In the same way, If I am reading (with read()) from the client and get -1, does it mean that the client has closed the socket?What is the best way to detect if a remote peer has closed the socket or not?If I use methods like isInputShutdown() or isOutputShutdown() ?My main goal is read into a byte array until the remote peer has closed the socket?

I would like to know if it is possible to launch my application whenever a new entry is written to phone call log (i.e. out-going, in-coming or missed call). I wrote an application to manage the call log entries as per user preferences by listening to the publication of android.intent.action.PHONE_STATE events. My application is working fine as long as its process is running. However if the user has stopped my application with a task-killer application, then the log entries can not be managed as my app itself was not running. I need a way to make sure that my application is launched in the background if it is not already running when the android.intent.action.PHONE_STATE occurs. Or is it possible to launch my application as a service that always runs?

I have a Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro - I hate it for several reasons! but I can't ever give it for several reasons!(Most important reason being it's really small + it's an Android phone)Probably the most annoying feature is not being able to put the phone down *instantly* oK, to be fair this a 'fantastic' feature of 95% of Android phones What's wrong with having a phyical button that ends EVERYTHING!Instead, I *have* to WAIT for the damn icon to appear after removing from the side of my head! It takes a LOOONG lifetime for the icon to appear - OK, it probably takes 1/2 - 1 second to appear - tooo long for me! And frustrating! How many hours of my life have I lost waiting for the button to appear so that I can end the call! AND what happens if you accidentally hit something else!! And end up going to another menu! You have to navigate your way back to the call - this take an enternity to do - and especially f u start panicing and want to do it quickly - the evil phone knows! and slooows you down!
1. What am I missing?? Is there a quick way to put the phone down with one of the keys?
2. Else, failing that, is there an application that will let me use one of the physical keys to put the phone down? Not sure how well this would work out - but can't think it would be hard to program?
I've come across one of the *best* applications the world has ever seen for Android! Actually... there's quite a few of these - I can put loudspeaker on by simply turning the phone upside down OR putting it flat face down! (Getting to the loud speaker to work is a pain in the **** for me otherwise!)is there a similar application to end my calls? Am I going mad? Does someone out there understand or appreciate my problems!

I've been a Blackberry guy for 5 years. I made the switch from Storm 2 to the DX. I miss two things from my Blackberry. 1) PHONE ONLY. I would switch my BB to "phone only" at night when I went to bed. So I wasnt awakened for any messages, but did if I received a phone call. I am a State Trooper and I get called out every so often so this worked great. CAN'T FIND ANY APP OR SETTING TO MIMIC THIS FROM MY BB. 2)BB messenger. Wish I still had the "d" or "r" when I sent a message to someone to know if they got it or if they read the message.

Has anyone had an error along the lines of "(application) cannot be installed on this phone.", where the application name is in place of (application). This is on cupcake, I have my version minSdkVersion set to 3, and I've had no problems prior to this new version. Runs fine in the emulator, so I'm stumped?

I just rebuilt an application to use some new assets, and now I get this message on my phone when I try to install it: "Application not installed" "UnitTests could not be installed on this phone" Anyone know what's going on? I've checked and I've definitely got "Unknown sources" ticked on the application settings. This is just a self signed application to run my unit tests on an actual phone (the emulator doesn't cut it for real testing). I tried creating a new keystore, and they didn't help. What on earth? The only thing I can think of that I've done recently is accept a google security update.If they've silently done some other updates that prevent self signed applications running, I'm severely upset.

Yesterday i bought a HTC Magic, and it's awesome. But there is one thing i miss, and it is to control the phone through the PC. When i'm at the office, it's so great to have the mobile in a window on the desktop when it's connected through the USB. Does anyone know if there is an application that make this possible? Like with the WinMo-application MyMobiler?

I really wanted GDE to work but today it made my phone all but useless. It locked up my phone for 5 minutes, so i pulled the battery to reset and for the next 45 minutes the phone app would not work at all, it would open but would not dial any #, and the rest of GDE was so slow i couldnt do anything. I couldnt turn wifi on or off, gps on or off, close open programs or open new ones. I finally had to uninstall it cause it was just too much for the phone. Its a shame cause i liked it, i installed home ++ today and seems to be doing ok.

I know the tabs have only been out for a short time, but has anyone seen an app for sync between an Android phone to the Tab? I would love the ability to have my phone in the other room and have my tab ring or show me I have an incoming/missed call or waiting text, on my phone. Even better would be the ability to read that text and respond via my tablet.

I am trying to toggle the microphone of Android mobile. App. freezes if I run the mute and unmute in a loop, With a delay of say 500ms. Is there a specific reason mobile behaves this way? (Motorola Droid is not even able to mute the phone) however all other mobiles are able to do it. This runs in a loop for 20 times
audioService.setMicrophoneMute(true);
if(audioService.isMicrophoneMute())
{
Toast.makeText(getBaseContext(), "MUTED", 1).show();}
try {
Thread.sleep(1000,90);
}
catch (InterruptedException e)

I made a mistake and I still had the debug version of my app (from Eclipse) on my phone when I tried to install a signed version. The install failed, but I could no longer access the debug version in Manage Applications to un install it. I was at work and couldn't reinstall the debug version in order to uni nstall, so I did a complete factory reset of my phone (using My Backup Pro to backup stuff). Now I can install my app. However, now I notice upon reboot that my app loses all of its data from shared preferences. I'm not entirely sure that it's not a problem of mine somehow, but does anyone know why it is doing that and how I can fix it? I may have left the debug gable. true on in the version I'm trying to test. Would that cause this problem?

Suppose I wanted to design a cheap little app which lets you schedule fake phone calls to yourself, along similar lines as this app:
http://magictap.net/fakecalls/
I'd imagine using an AlarmManager would be suitable for this purpose, the question is how to generate a fake incoming call screen, complete with the slide to answer call option. My initial approach, the AlarmManager should launch a PendingIntent. However, I'm not sure where to go from here, in particular to get an Activity started which displays the fake call screen.
