Android :: Android Application Be Launched From Built-in Phone Call Log Application
Feb 21, 2010
I would like to know if it is possible to launch my application whenever a new entry is written to phone call log (i.e. out-going, in-coming or missed call). I wrote an application to manage the call log entries as per user preferences by listening to the publication of android.intent.action.PHONE_STATE events. My application is working fine as long as its process is running. However if the user has stopped my application with a task-killer application, then the log entries can not be managed as my app itself was not running. I need a way to make sure that my application is launched in the background if it is not already running when the android.intent.action.PHONE_STATE occurs. Or is it possible to launch my application as a service that always runs?

I'm trying to display a map using that rotates according to the phone's orientation. I have rewrite a part of the google sample to use a SensorEventListner instead of a SensorListener.
My Problem is when I try to use the findViewByID() method to display the map my application crashes on start. If I use MapView(Context, String) to create my view it works fine. Did I miss something to use main.xml layout file ? What's wrong with this ?
Here is my code :.......................

I have uploaded application to market and met weird problem which I never received before - when I click "Open" button when the application is installed I receive error dialog and the application is forced to close. I do not have this problem when start application from desktop launcher panel. I have already receive 2 stars for that though the exception even comes not from my cod - very unpleasant surprize from market app.
Application uses vibration and declares corresponding uses-permission "android.permission.VIBRATE" - this is what the exception tells me about, but I can't see such problem with other apps that use vibration on market.
Here the exception:

Here is application manifest:

Applications can have any number of launchable activities. I know how to get the list of these activities via PackageManager.
Is there a way to determine which activities can be launched via startActivity?
For example, the Documents To Go app has different activities that will start Word, Excel, Powerpoint, PDF, etc... I am able to launch all o these just fine.
However, it also contains some activities that I am not able to launch with startActivity... If I attempt to do this I get a SecurityException.
I want to be able to determine which activities I can safely launch and which I cannot so I only present the user with a list of activities that I can safely launch from within my application...

If I get an Android phone, such as HTC Hero or Nexus One (if it comes to Sprint), is the default "Contact" app "Gmail Contacts"? That is, will it automatically sync my Gmail Contacts to the phone's internal "Contacts" database? I like the idea of pushing everything to Gmail (including all my contact info) and I'd love it if the Android phone would sync with all the contacts in Gmail. That way, I will always be backed up and never have to worry about loosing the 500 or so contacts I've built up over the years on my current Palm Treo phone. If I don't like the built-in Contact app on whatever Android phone I end up with, are there better apps for sale that will also sync with Gmail's contacts?

After you select a word, you have the option to copy it, look it up or share it. I find the built in quick lookup app pretty awesome since it has wikipedia, translate and dictionary all combined into one. However, I can't figure out how to open the application directly to lookup other words. And typing in words in the quick search box doesn't look it up either. I'm on Droid Incredible.

I am using the standard gmail app that comes with the motorola droid. However password authentication is only required the first time the application is launched. This means anyone who picks up your phone can see your email with one touch. Is there a way to require password authentication each time the application is launched?

I've been trying to make my app implement the built in quick search, similar to how it is done in ApiDemos' "app/search/invoke search". I have tried everything from trying to follow different examples, to copying the code exactly as it is in ApiDemos. All I've found for the former have been concerned with older versions of the SDK, and simply not worked. As for the stuff that I can actually run and see working in ApiDemos, I've tried copying the following
com.example.android.apis.app.SearchInvoke.java
com.example.android.apis.app.SearchQueryResults.java
com.example.android.apis.app.SearchSuggestionSampleProvider.java
res/layout/search_invoke.xml res/layout/search_query_results.xml
res/values/arrays.xml res/values/strings.xml res/xml/searchable.xml
And everything under "Search Samples" in AndroidManifest.xml
This copying gets me a view that looks exactly like the one I'm facing when running ApiDemos, but when I click the search button, in the quick search box, Android always just opens up a browser window, with Google search results for the given query. I simply cannot find the critical component in ApiDemos that tells android that I want to use my own custom code for handling the search request. Both documentation and other online resources seem very lacking when it comes to this.

Suppose I wanted to design a cheap little app which lets you schedule fake phone calls to yourself, along similar lines as this app:
http://magictap.net/fakecalls/
I'd imagine using an AlarmManager would be suitable for this purpose, the question is how to generate a fake incoming call screen, complete with the slide to answer call option. My initial approach, the AlarmManager should launch a PendingIntent. However, I'm not sure where to go from here, in particular to get an Activity started which displays the fake call screen.

I have a task at sight but need some expert help: is it possible to place a phone call within an Activity without bringing up the native Phone app? I need to place a call from the app I am developing, so what I would like to do is to pass a phone number through an Activity that may or may not bring the Phone app up to screen.

Sometimes I keep on hitting a call out to someone and I have a freak out session and put the phone call in the background. I thought of putting this into the app section but since I believe the droid is the main athlete who needs this application. Anybody willing to put one on? Simple idea, have this kill all / single phone with a slight tap of the icon on the background.

Now i want my application to handle the incoming call instead of default android application. So for this, i am trying to kill the android phone process. Please tell me can i do so. If not, then how can i reject the incoming call.

I have someone who's calls I wish to block. No I don't want to forward him to voice mail (even though I already have). I want the phone's caller ID to recognize the caller and simply bloc the call (I don't want the phone to ring and I don't want it to accept any voice mails from this guy). I know google voice has this feature, but I don't want to activate the single number version of GV (I'm not ready to have only one number. I read a similar thread that was posted here some time ago, but there were no definitive answers on it: http://androidforums.com/support/6077-caller-id-based-blocking-call-forwarding.html. I was wondering if anyone was aware of any apps that could be used to block a specific incoming number, which could be installed without having to root the phone.

Is there an app that can show me call usage statistics for the phone? Particularly, I'm trying to figure out how many minutes I've spent talking to a particular person. Sure, I could go through and add up every single call I've made to them in my call log, but is there some app that does that for me?

Was trying to call another application using an *explicit* intent, but am finding it does not seem possible. I do not wish to use implicit intents. To test it out, try calling the YouTube main activity.
Intent i = new Intent(); ComponentName cn = new ComponentName("com.google.android.youtube","com.google.android.youtube.HomeActivity.class"); i.setComponent(cn); startActivity(i);
I get this error:
08-29 00:54:26.598: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(7332): Caused by: android.content.ActivityNotFoundException: Unable to find explicit activity class {com.google.android.youtube/ com.google.android.youtube.HomeActivity.class}; have you declared this activity in your AndroidManifest.xml? Does anyone know whether this is possible? (using explicit intents to call another application)
