Android :: Git For Peer To Peer Content Distribution Network

Aug 4, 2010

Is there anyone using git in such a fashion? I would like to distribute some multimedia content from a server to some Android remote devices. I would like them sending back a log file with device usage statistics (provided by an android app I will write). The server could be anything but I would prefer a linux box. I thought that since git handle and sych only differences between files, It would be a nice tool for this purpose and I would have content revision history as a bonus. I need some piece of advice on how the repositories architecture could be organized: does It have to be a star topology or something different? The remote end of the sistem don't need any interactivity, in other words the remote git repository could pull and push whatever It needs to, autonomously and automatically.

UPDATE: I've found here on SO the author of git internals (I'm downloading It right now), Scott Chacon talking about the architecture I would like to implement.
UPDATE 2: OK I read the chapter about "Non-SCM uses of Git" and here is what the author says about a Peer to Peer CDN:.....

Android :: Peer To Peer Phone Application?

Sep 24, 2009

I am with a group of college students making a multiplayer game as a class project on the Android platform for the G1. Our primary goal is to allow multiple phones (or for the sake of initial testing, a phone and an emulator on a PC) to communicate with one another. Our game is turn based, and we've been looking into TCP/IP and VNC proxy servers to transfer data between the game clients on each phone, but none of them seem particularly simple to implement. We've been through many articles documenting how difficult peer-to-peer connections are on the Android platform. What would some viable network protocols to use for the sake of our project and how should we go about setting them up?

General :: Peer To Peer Calling Without A Server?

Aug 19, 2012

Is there a voice / messaging app that will work via a wifi connection WITHOUT the need for an Internet connection? For example, two people with phones connected to the same router over wifi, but NO ACCESS to the Internet. I'm assuming apps like Skype would require both devices to be able to communicate with the Skype server to initiate the call, but might allow peer-to-peer afterwards.

I am not interested in making calls or texts to people outside of the wifi network. Does such an app exist?

Android :: Peer To Peer And PDAnet

I am able to browse the internet and play some online games just fine, but if I open my Ares P2P program (on my computer), I am unable to stay connected to my phone. PDAnet Desktop just disconnects without any error messages. Does PDAnet block this type of software, or do I have something misconfigured? Or should I just use a different P2P program?

How To Detect If Socket Is Closed By Remote Peer

Jul 11, 2012

I am writing a proxy in Android. I want to know, how one may detect if the server or client has closed its socket? I am using pre-NIO sockets. It should be noted that, the YouTube App will connect with my Proxy server (I have installed proxydroid) and then data will pass between YouTube App and Youtube Server through my proxy.

I have used read() method for reading. When I am reading (with read() ) as a client (from the server) if I get -1, does it mean that the server has closed the socket?

In the same way, If I am reading (with read()) from the client and get -1, does it mean that the client has closed the socket? What is the best way to detect if a remote peer has closed the socket or not?If I use methods like isInputShutdown() or isOutputShutdown() ?My main goal is read into a byte array until the remote peer has closed the socket?

Android : Content Provider Implementation - Original Data Stored On Network Or Local/remote File Systems

I'm now trying to implement my own content provider. My original data was stored on network or local/remote file systems, so I want to provide data via input stream. I know that client may call ContentResolver.getnputStream to retrieve the input stream to access data. But I don't know how to implement content provider in this situation, I searched the Internet but all the tutorials for content provider are talks about how to expose data that stored on local database. how to expose data that stored on file systems using a content provider? what happened when client call ContentResolver.getnputStream? I want to know how to return an input stream to my client.

Android :: App Ad-hoc Distribution And Code Signing

Jul 16, 2010

Is there a way to code-sign (to allow it to open only on a device with specific ID) your Android app when using ad-hoc distribution (sending app to testers or clients as a subcontractor)?I know I can share apk file pretty easily, but what if I don't want other people to redistribute the app before it is ready? I don't want testers to be able to distribute not finished and buggy version of my app for example. Or I would like to show my client the final version of the app, but not allow them to distribute it until the payment is made.

Android :: Polite Discussion Of Lite / Trial Vs Pro Distribution

Mar 19, 2009

First I will explain my situation. Then, I would greatly appreciate constructive dialog on how other developers feel similar situations should be managed.I wrote a simple app in November.I offered it for free on the Market for two reasons. One, Google hadn't implemented paid apps yet, so I had no choice. Two, by my own admission, v1.0 was too simple too garner payment. However, in the app's documentation, I requested donations toward future development.Out of thousands of installs, I received nothing. This week I finished a considerably fancier version of the program. Given hundreds of hours of unpaid development, I decided to charge a few bucks for the new version.I split the app into lite and pro versions. The lite version has all the new fancy features enabled but is limited in how large a document can be created (spread sheet, I limited the number of rows/cols, admittedly unlimited in the earlier version). The pro version went to Market as a new app, the lite version on top of the old app to retain the long feedback history.

Since the Market provides no way to downgrade, I put the old unlimited version on my website and put directions in the new lite version in multiple places explaining how to revert to the old version. Thus, any user dissatisfied with the rol/col limit could restore the EXACT functionality they had before upgrading to the lite version.Incidentally, the 325 character blurb allotted on the Market was insufficient to list the new features and the lite version's limitation and the caveat that the lite version could be reverted through my website.I simply could not communicate these facts to users to help them decide whether to upgrade or what to expect after upgrading.

The complaints about the new lite version have been diverse. Most pertinent to this discussion are complaints that the lite version now limits the rows/cols where the previous version didn't.I find such complaints unjustifiable since I explicitly permit reversion.I literally don't see what they have to complain about. Another irksome genre of complaints is that the program is still too simple to ask any money for at all. I am infuriated. It costs less than an ice cream cone. So, as discussion, how would other developers handle this situation: initial app is simple so offered for free, later version is complex so split into lite/pro. You don't want to limit the lite version by not showing the new fancy features, so the limitation must be something else, a time limit, a forced delay splash screen, something.I chose limited rows/cols on a spreadsheet app, but also permitted reversion to the old unlimited version.

Android :: Required Minimum Distribution Calculation Not Working

Nov 13, 2010

I am trying to make an app for the Android that does RMD calculations. The program, however, keeps giving 0.0.

I think that my problem lies in this code:

CODE:......................

I tried using .equals(), but it complained that I was trying to dereference the long value. Also, I am aware that java.util.Date is deprecated, but I don't want to try the other classes. From my first Android app, I figured out the "==" does not work, but I am not sure what to do here.

I have verified that the input for a balance and the birthdate values were accepted, so that is how I limited it to this particular class.

Android :: Switching Content Providers For Same Content URI

Aug 12, 2009

This may seem like a stupid question but I need to be sure. I was wondering if it was possible to pro-grammatically change the Content Provider used when making a query given a Content URI. The reason being I need to know if it's possible to force the Calendar/Contacts applications to read from a different database via a different Content Provider temporarily while my application is running, so that I can reuse those applications to display my own data. Since the Content URI s are hard coded in each of these applications the only way it might be possible is if we could somehow temporarily change the Content Provider used for a given URI. I know this probably isn't possible, I just need to show it isn't. Could someone confirm this can't be done?

Android :: Android To Open Network Connection On Specified Network Interface - Network Type

Mar 6, 2009

I have been looking at the ConnectivityManager class documented at http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/ConnectivityManage... .

I would like to know if an Android application can open a network connection (socket) on a specified network interface [on a device supporting multiple network interface types WiFi, Cellular, WiMax etc] ? I am looking for the capability for an application to open a socket on a given type of network for example over WiFi network or over 3G Cellular Data network.

If this is possible in Android, how would I code this requirement within the API Framework ? The ConnectivityManager enables an application to learn about available network connections and currently categorises them as either TYPE_WIFI or TYPE_MOBILE.

There is a member function in the ConnectivityManager class called requestRouteToHost(int, int) [url] which "Ensure that a network route exists to deliver traffic to the specified host via the specified network interface. An attempt to add a route that already exists is ignored, but treated as successful." Sounds like this would install an IP routing table entry to reach a given host via a specified network interface type (WiFi or Mobile). After calling this would it be sufficient for an application to open a socket and connect to the desired destination address ?

Or perhaps the application needs to bind() a socket to a local address of a network interface of the desired type (WiFi or Mobile) Or by setting a socket-level socket option of SO_DONTROUTE ?

Android : Content Provider - No Link Between Content Provider And Its CONTENT_URI Declared In Another Class

Mar 1, 2010

I am having a hard time understanding content providers. In the notepad example and others, the content provider never even declares its CONTENT_URI anywhere inside itself, yet the docs say to publicly declare this. It's declared in a different class. So when an activity queries a content provider with a CONTENT_URI, how does Android know which one I want. I see no link between a content provider and its CONTENT_URI declared in another class.

I also don't how to think about intents and content providers. I know that you don't call an intent on a content provider. But an activity queries a content provider without an intent, and an activity has a mimetype attribute in the manifest that would seem to tie it to a content provider.

HTC Droid Eris :: Mobile Network ON - Can't See That Have Any Network Traffic Or Any Apps Running In Background That Are Syncing Data At All

May 29, 2010

My eris has always has pretty alright battery life, what I would expect out of a smartphone, if unplugged at 9AM it usually was running on its last leg around midnight. I've had it for over 5 months now, I've always had it activated on alltel, I installed the 2.1v3 leak before the official OTA was out and just lately it seems like there something very wrong with my battery life...

If I unplug my phone at 9AM within the past week and occasionaly check and respond to a text message, my battery had been down to almost 30% by NOON... what?..

I have noticed that if I disable Mobile Network (3g/1x data), the thing lasts all day and some... If I turn mobile network ON, I can't see that I have any network traffic or any apps running in the background that are syncing data at all... I've had google account sync mess up on me before and have to reset my google account because it gets stuck in a syncing loop, but its not doing that, already checked. Very weird.

Anyone thing it could be something wrong in my ##PROGRAM#/##778# provisioning menu, maybe something got changed?.. Maybe it could be do to Alltel's AT&T merger that's happening right now, maybe some 3G tower's radios are turned off or something...
