Android :: Overriding Dialog Preference Default Back Keypress
Jul 7, 2010
By default, when in DialogPreference you press back button, it mimics that you've pressed NegativeButton. I'd like to override that but can't find an easy way except to recreate DialogPreference from scratch (which at the moment seems like an overkill), because I'd like that PositiveButton set something, NegativeButton to unset something, and back key to leave things as they were (i.e. to not unset something). I've even tried to override showDialog() but: a) its not simple, b) I don't think I should mess too much with internals of OS supplied code like a bunch of private "m" variables.

I use themes in my apps, which generally just extend android:Theme and then set a bunch of styles. I use dialogs made from layouts, but since I set the theme for the application, they have inherited all of the regular styles and no longer carry a border, etc. My question is: How do I say, "I want everything to use this theme which extends Theme, except dialogs, which should use this other theme that extends Theme.Dialog"? It seems like that's how things work by default but when you set the theme to your own, you lose the dialog theme!

I encounter a problem with a ProgressDialog in a PreferencesActivity in my application.What I want to do is pop up a ProgressDialog after the user has changed his username or password during the check on the remote server. In the onSharedPreferenceChanged() I call the ProgressDialog.show() method. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes not at all.

Wasn't sure exactly how to ask this, but here we go So, for example, I installed "Dialer One", a dialer replacement.So whenever I hit the "Phone" button, it asks how I want to complete the action. Using Dialer One, or Phone. And it gives me the option to "Use by default for this action".So, lets say I want to use Dialer One by default, but then I change my mind. How do I set it back to the default Phone.Obviously, this question applies to more than just the phone app. After writing all that I think the simple way to ask my question is- I really just want to know how to undo the 'use by default for this action' choices I may make in the future.

If user repeatedly presses back button, I need a way to detect when they are on the very last activity of my task/app and show "Do you want to exit?" dialog befor they return to Home Screen or whatever previous app they had running.
Its easy enough to hook onkeypressed(), but how do I figure out that this is a "last" activity in the task?

I have a weird problem on progress dialog: I have 2 views: Login View and say, Display View. In Login View, when I click the 'Login' button, a progress dialog is created (new ProgressDialog(...)), shown and stored in a variable 'mProgressDialog'. After login, the dialog is dismissed and some information are displayed in Display View (Login View hides). Now I want to display another progress dialog when 'Update' button is clicked and when the update is done, dismiss the dialog and display new information. So I use: the Display View for a blink and then shows the Login View. I tried to change the view etc. but same problem happens over and over again. So I am thinking it might because one activity can only be assigned to ONE progress dialog and no matter how you re-create it you still get the same progress dialog. And the dialog is linked to a certain view which will be shown automatically when the dialog dismisses.

I would like the users of my android app to have the option to email me the stacktrace of any uncaught exception that crashes my app. Originally I thought I would just wrap every entry point to my app in a try/catch block, but there are far too many of these even in my tiny app for this to be reasonable.So what I am really looking for is a way to specify some method to be the default handler for any uncaught exceptions.

greetings, We are trying to produce a custom communication product that is based on android 2.2 source tree. This product has only one physical button (will be assigned as Home). Is there a way to override the functionality of this Home button so it can pop-up three button activity that simulates the actual Back, Menu and Home button on a regular android phone. Is there any specific configuration when compiling the 2.2 source tree to achieve the desired behavior without modifying the source code? If not, can anyone please provide some hints on how or which portion of the source to modify?

I am trying to override the home button in my application. I am aware that this is not recommended behaviour and all links I've found about this says that it is actually not possible. However, the native dialer of HTC Sense as well as the dialer for Sony Ericsson (tested on X10 mini) both ignore the home button press on incomming calls. How can I do the samein my app?

Is there a way to replace the scrollbar drawable in an application (i.e. I have a customized scrollbar view that I would like to use instead of the default gray scrollbar that comes with the Android framework). I looked through I believe all of the android attributes and none seem to support it (at least the simplest way I know how which I would assume would be setting a drawable to some android attribute). If not and say it requires a change in the framework, where would I start looking for it (in the framework)?

what the default behaviour of the back button is, as far as the Android platform is concerned.
For example, in the Contacts Application, if I am creating a contact, I just key in a name, and the press back button, the contact is saved with only the name. Fair enough. But, I then edit this contact to include a phone number and press back button. This contact is updated which now includes the phone number. I again edit this contact. This time I remove the name, as well as the phone number and press the back button. I get a message saying, "Contact doesn't exist". In this case, it deletes the contact. :(
In the mail appllication, while composing, when I press back, it goes to the drafts folder. Thats good. But, if I just have to cancel this, and I don't want this to go to drafts folder. For this, I have to open the menu, and select "Cancel".

My girlfriend recently got the HTC Tattoo (running Android 1.6) and she's having major issues with the alarm on the Clock application. Whenever she sets the alarm to wake up in the morning, it doesnt go off at the desired time. There's no sound or not waking of the screen. The alarm does finally sound when the screen is woken, and this can be 20 minutes or so after the alarm *should* have sounded! It works ok if the alarm is set to go off in 5 minutes time or so, but it seems like Android forgets to ring the alarm until the screen is woken and then does it.Can anyone provide any insight into this issue? I have seen that there are other threads where the alarm doesn't work but they dont cover this behavior.

I am struggling with the done button on the soft keyboard. I can't get the soft keyboard Done keypress to hide the keyboard. From another button, it works perfectly with imm.hideSoftInputFromWindow(editText.getApplicationWindowToken(), 0);
but the onKeyListener does not function the way I want. When I hit the editText, the soft keyboard shows up and its content is cleared from characters. The main.xml:
<EditText android:id="@+id/answer"
android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal" android:textSize="36px"
android:inputType="phone" android:minWidth="60dp" android:maxWidth="60dp" />
The Java file:
private EditText editText;...
editText = (EditText)findViewById(R.id.answer);
editText.setOnClickListener(onKeyboard);
editText.setOnKeyListener(onSoftKeyboardDonePress); ...
// method not working: private View.OnKeyListener onSoftKeyboardDonePress=new View.OnKeyListener() { public boolean onKey(View v, int keyCode, KeyEvent event) {
if (event.getKeyCode() == KeyEvent.FLAG_EDITOR_ACTION) {
// code to hide the soft keyboard
imm = (InputMethodManager) getSystemService( Context.INPUT_METHOD_SERVICE);
imm.hideSoftInputFromWindow(editText.getApplicationWindowToken(), 0); }
return false; } };
private View.OnClickListener onKeyboard=new View.OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View v) { editText.setText(""); } };
The working method using a button (in the same java file):
private View.OnClickListener onDone=new View.OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View v) { ....
// code to hide the soft keyboard
imm = (InputMethodManager) getSystemService( Context.INPUT_METHOD_SERVICE);
imm.hideSoftInputFromWindow(editText.getApplicationWindowToken(), 0); } };
When I press key no "9" the keyboard hides.

For some reason, and only on my Dell Vostro 1000 laptop, the Android emulator keeps thinking I have the = key pressed and continually emits a string of "=====" equal signs. This happens no matter what I'm doing in the emulator. It responds to my manual keypresses as well, interspersing them. It happens no matter which version of the Android system I run (2.1, 2.2, etc.) Strangely, it happens even running the Android emulator via a remote desktop session where the remote desktop client is the laptop and the server is another PC running the emulator. If I run the emulator on the other PC locally (not remote desktop,) the emulator functions fine!
This problem didn't occur when I first installed the SDK and as far as I know no other software has been installed since then. I tried clicking the "clear user data" from the emulator launcher and still no effect. I have also tried deleting the SDK directory and reinstalling it, but the effect is still there.
Update: I found another application that exhibits this behavior. ScummVM when opening a dialog to save the game also receives these phantom keypresses. It persists in Windows 7.
