Android :: Default Behaviour Of The Back Button

Sep 17, 2009

what the default behaviour of the back button is, as far as the Android platform is concerned.

For example, in the Contacts Application, if I am creating a contact, I just key in a name, and the press back button, the contact is saved with only the name. Fair enough. But, I then edit this contact to include a phone number and press back button. This contact is updated which now includes the phone number. I again edit this contact. This time I remove the name, as well as the phone number and press the back button. I get a message saying, "Contact doesn't exist". In this case, it deletes the contact. :(

In the mail appllication, while composing, when I press back, it goes to the drafts folder. Thats good. But, if I just have to cancel this, and I don't want this to go to drafts folder. For this, I have to open the menu, and select "Cancel".

Sprint HTC Hero :: Using Back Button While On The Internet Doesn't Default To Last Place

Jun 18, 2010

The problem - when viewing a webpage such as craigslist, if I click into an ad and then go back to the previous page my location on the previous page always defaults close to the top of the page instead of that last link I clicked. This is a very annoying problem if your a hardcore craigslist junkie like me because you can be you have to scroll back thru all of the ads you looked at just to get back to where you originally were.

Trying to fix the problem using two kinds of soft resets, a hard reset, resets followed by reinstallations of 2.1 ,etc etc, I finally went to a sprint store to get it checked out and the rep had a Hero that did the same damn thing! Apparently he didn't have a problem with his phone doing this because he just kept giving me some dumb blank stare.

1.5 never had a problem with web pages forgetting their locations when using the back button. Yet I haven't seen anybody else complain about this. Is anybody else able to recreate this problem? One thing to look for, after I reset the phone, reinstalled 2.1 or cleared the internet cache, the phone will do fine for a few minutes, recognizing pages like its supposed to, but after usually 4-6 times of clicking links the phone goes right back to forgetting locations.

I upgraded to 2.1. With 1.5 I had a phone I loved that worked fine and the only problem I had was a laggy phone-book, now I have a phone with a laggy dialer and that doesn't do web pages correctly. BTW, it does this with all browsers, not just the stock browser and Dolphin.

Motorola Droid X : Back Button Functionality - Cannot Simply Go Back One Menu Using The Back Key

Jul 15, 2010

This is my first android device and i'm loving it... but one thing that irks me is the use, or lack thereof, of the back button.

As I am navigating menus and options in the Settings, I cannot simply go back one menu using the back key. For example, if I go to Settings->Battery Manager->Battery Profile Options and want to go back to the Settings screen, I cannot.

Pushing the back button does nothing and I can only go back to the Settings menu by going Home, then re-entering.

Another quirk regarding the back button is when reading emails. Using a regular email account such as Hotmail, I cannot simply read an email and go back to the inbox using the button.

It makes navigating the phone very tedious.

Android :: How To Control Activity Flow - Back Button Versus Home Button

Sep 2, 2010

I have 3 activities in my app: Activity1 -> Activity2 -> Activity3. Inside Activity3, if the user presses Back, I would like to return to Activity2. In Activity3's onPause event, I added a finish() statement. That's probably not even necessary, but I wanted to make sure this Activity gets cleaned up. This works fine.
However, while in Activity3, if the user presses Home or starts a new app (through notification bar or some other means), I want both Activity3 and Activity2 to finish. If the user returns to this app, he should resume with Activity1.

I have figured out how to do one or the other, but I can't figure out how to handle both cases, if it's even possible. Can I trap the "Back" button in Activity3 and send a message back to Activity2 telling it not to finish()? It seems like the Activities follow the same lifecycle flow (Pause, Stop) regardless of what you do to send them to the background. Just to answer the question of why I want this behavior, imagine that Activity1 is a login screen, Activity2 is a selection screen, and Activity3 is a content screen. If I press Back from the content page, I want to be able to make a new selection. If I exit via any other means (Home, notification bar), I want the user to be "logged out".

Android :: WebView.clearHistory() - Don't Want Back Button To Allow User To Go Back Further Than Current Session

Mar 31, 2009

I call WebView.clearHistory(), but I am still able to go back after doing so. I want to reuse a WebView, but I don't want the back button to allow the user to go back further than the current "session" of using the WebView. Anybody know what is the best way to handle this? I thought for sure that clearHistory() would do it.

Android : Back Button - Disable In Buffering Or Should Prevent The Player Tostart If Back Is Clicked

Oct 11, 2010

In my android application i have a video list screen,a buffering screen and a videoplayer screen.
As soon as the user clicks an item from videolist screen ,he is navigated to buffering screen and then to videoplayer.
In the buffering screen i am using Async task and doing the loading process in on background process.

Now my issue is like the user if has selested a video then gets navigated to buffering screen. But if the user clicks back when he is in buffering screen then initially he is getting navigated to videolist screen but immediately after that again he is navigated to videoplayer screen.

What i would like to have is either the back button should be made disable in buffering or should prevent the player tostart if back is clicked.

HTC EVO 4G :: Changing Default Action Apps Back To Default?

Jun 7, 2010

Wasn't sure exactly how to ask this, but here we go So, for example, I installed "Dialer One", a dialer replacement. So whenever I hit the "Phone" button, it asks how I want to complete the action. Using Dialer One, or Phone. And it gives me the option to "Use by default for this action".So, lets say I want to use Dialer One by default, but then I change my mind. How do I set it back to the default Phone.Obviously, this question applies to more than just the phone app. After writing all that I think the simple way to ask my question is- I really just want to know how to undo the 'use by default for this action' choices I may make in the future.

Motorola Droid X : Back Button - Swipe Left To Right On Maybe The Top Bar It Goes Back

Jul 19, 2010

I'm finding that I'm using the back button A LOT whether browsing the web or just navigating the OS. It kind of sucks because the buttons on the droid x are well, really small, and sometimes hard to press because they are so narrow and flimsy feeling. And depending on how you are holding the phone, it could be a good bit of distance for your thumb to travel or I'm finding myself having to reposition the phone in my hands just to reach the back button, which you seem to need very frequently.

Anyone know of any kind of back 'swipe' implementation ? Like some software you can install that makes it if you swipe left to right on maybe the top bar it goes back?

Android :: Android - Override Back Button To Act Like Home Button

Jan 4, 2010

On pressing the back button, I'd like my application to go into the stopped state, rather than the destroyed state. In the Android docs it states: not all activities have the behavior that they are destroyed when BACK is pressed. When the user starts playing music in the Music application and then presses BACK, the application overrides the normal back behavior, preventing the player activity from being destroyed, and continues playing music, even though its activity is no longer visible

How do I replicate this functionality in my own application? I think there must be three possibilities.

1) Capture the back button press (as below) and then call whatever method(s) the home button calls...........

Android :: SetChoiceMode - GetSelectedItemPosition & Inconsistent Behaviour

Feb 18, 2009

Got an activity that extends ListActivity. The list is backed up by a custom adapter that extends BaseAdapter. -- getListView().setFocusable(true); getListView().setChoiceMode(ListView.CHOICE_MODE_SINGLE); -- I do a simple (getSelectedItemPosition() == == ListView.INVALID_POSITION) check in onPrepareOptionsMenu() to disable the items that require an item to be selected.

Now, what I do after launching the activity (the action takes place under emulator, ver.1.1) an what it looks like: 1) Hit menu - the menu items are disabled - OK 2) Select an item with mouse wheel and hit menu - the items get enabled - OK 3) Click anywhere outside the list, repeat 2). The items don't get enabled - WTF? 4) Start from scratch, select an item hitting Del and moving mouse. The result is the same as for 3).

Why do these (3, 4) things keep happening to me?

Android :: SensorManager Strange Behaviour Of GetOrientation

Jul 7, 2010

I need to retrieve the orientation of my phone. At the moment i wrote this :

CODE:................

This code allows me to get the orientation of the phone if i leave the phone on a flat surface and i rotate it over the surface.

What i did not understand is why if i move the phone upwards the value of this.actual_orientation[0] ,which is the rotation on the zed axis as described [here][1], the value increases although there was no rotation.

Did someone know what happens?

Another strange thing..

I tried my application in the office at work and it had the strange behaviour i described before..
I tried in the same office(same situation) a compass app that i took from the market and it has the same behaviour of mine..when i moved the phone upwards the value changed consistently..
I tried in the same office(same situation) the i-phone compass and it didn't have that strange behaviour!

Then when i arrived at home i tried both, my application and the compass app of my android phone, and they worked!even if i move upwards the phone the value are stable...

Android :: Default Media Button Application

Nov 11, 2010

I wonder whether there is a concept in Android that allows a user to define which application should be launched if a headset media button is pressed..? This would be something similar as the concept of a "default browser" or "default e-mail application" that is launched when a website should be opened or a mail needs to be sent. As far as I know such a concept at least exists for a browser on Android. Is there something like a "default media player" that is started when the user hits the headset's play button? If so, how could my application inform the system that it is a potential candidate for the "default media player" application?

Android :: Odd Behaviour With Launcher's Task Stack Handling

Aug 6, 2010

I have an application with two activities, A and B. A is the root activity, which then starts B.When the stack looks like this: HOME > A > B and I select A from the launcher, I want it to resume the task without clearing the stack, so B is shown. Right now this is mostly working. However. In certain circumstances this occasionally does not work. What we see in this situation is that invoking A from the launcher will create a new instance of A and add it to our task's stack: HOME > A > B > A If we go back to home and select A again, we'll get another one: This happens if, and only if, we uninstall the application completely using the application manager, and then reinstall it, via a file browser. Installing the application with adb does not cause this problem to appear. In addition, when this problem manifests, if we then reboot the device, the problem goes away and everything starts behaving correctly! This is smelling suspiciously like a launcher bug can anyone shed light on this? This is using Eclair on real hardware (not the emulator).Update I have more information. It seems this is an Android core bug; see http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=5277 in the Android bug tracker. Apparently running an application just after it's been installed by pressing the 'Run' button will run the application in a subtly wrong way. It's also still extant on Froyo, not just Eclair. Does anyone have any suggestions as to any possible workarounds?

Android :: Intent Activity Crash Behaviour - App Restarts Halfway Through The App

Oct 13, 2010

I have a pretty standard iPhone app that creates a series of around 7 unique Activities initialised by Intents.

However if the app crashes on the 7th Activity, the app restarts on the users phone around the 5th activity. The problem then is the info gathered from activities 1-4 is null, meaning the app is useless and the only way to get the app working again is to either continually press back or else kill the process.

Why does this behaviour occur, and is there a way to force the app to start back at the first activity when it crashes.
