Android :: Opera Is Developing Version
Oct 31, 2008
Does anyone know if Opera is developing a version for Android? I don't mind the current browser but its not really that great. Opera has the best mobile browser available and I'd really like to see it on my G1.

I am very interested in getting an android phone soon but I need to use a certain browser which for some reason is the ONLY mobile browser that works with my home security cameras.I have tried them all (opera, skyfire, iris etc) the only one that works, and works well, is opera mini 3 or mini 2.4.
Any newer versions of opera mini don't work. Go figure. So far I have used it only on windows mobile 6.0
If Opera mini 5 works on the android platform, do you think earlier versions,IE. 3.0 or 2.4 would also work? does it have to be downloaded as an app or can I install the version I have saved (it is not available from opera anymore}
I don't know where else to post my question. I am a new member.

Im sure that there must be a few using Opera Mini 5 beta out there.I was just looking through the settings and im wondering a bit about this "Opera Link".I signed up and well nothing happened. What exactly does "it" do and how exactly do I get "it" to do"it"?I had to re-read that to make sure "it" made sense.

First of all, I just want to say I am a software developer, but I am not an Android developer. However I usually walk around and think on stuff. AndI've been recently thinking all the news concerning how fragmented Android is getting, with different Android versions and tweaks by different phone manufacturers, and then for developers you have different size formats. An example would be that HTC Tattoo might not be able to run everything that another phone might run, due to different screen formats, etc. And now the Android tablets are coming with different Android versions and different screen sizes, all from 5" to 11". Will this make developing Android applications harder? Apple has it safe here since they manufacturer all devices that run the iPhone OS: the pods, phones and now the pad so they can easily control and make sure not to loose any customers by introducing a new device. When Apple introduced iPad they had to make sure that all the old iPhone applications would work on the iPad. They solved that neatly by saying that iPhone applications will simply be stretched out to the double size and it would fit on the iPad. Unfortunately Android does not have the same luxury to do this. As I said, I am not an Android developer. Just a curious software developer For you guys who work actively in the Android community, does Google have a solution for this? Will you be able to run phone applications on the tablets? Is there a bridge between the devices? Are there any standardizations or will Android development become even more fragmented? you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Developers" group. When I go to gmail in Opera Mini 5, I am presented with a webpage that is "basic" (for lack of a better word). When I go to gmail in the stock browser or Dolphin, I get an "enhanced" version of gmail. It has tabs across the top and is quicker to navigate around. Is there a way to get this enhanced version when using Opera Mini? Hopefully I am clear enough on the differences.

Or any other application, why do tehy require GPS permission for that matter? I am slightly concerned how certain apps want to know all about us. So what's the deal with this one and others? And what's new in yesterdays update? I can see absolutely no difference.

I used to be a C/C++ programmer before getting in to android. I am not sure how people maintain 2 versions of a program without using #ifdef preprocessor macros. Right now I am changing the package name in eclipse and changing the code manually, but this seems really inefficient. Can anybody suggest a good way of having 2 or more projects that share most of the code?

I'm planning on getting LockBot when I get my EVO and I was wondering, what's the difference between the free version and paid version. I basically want the Moto Droid lock screen on my EVO for the slide to toggle sound on/off feature due to the lack of an external switch on the EVO. Would I be best to get the paid version or will the free version do that?

Been trolling for a while but decided to register today. I have a question to some of you guru's. Opera seems to load very fast as does Dolphin, is there any differences between the two? Haven't tried Youtube on Opera but works fine in 3G on Dolphin (because I know the Youtube app on 1.5 doesn't). I do love the pinch zoom that Dolphin has. Question if and when we ever get the OTA to 2.x, I heard the pinch zoom will be disabled, is this true? I hope not.

Is there any web browser aside from Opera that has tab switching on the BOTTOM? I find it much more convenient to switch tabs on the bottom, since naturally that is where my fingers are, especially on larger phones.

Anyone else having problems with entering text while using opera mini? To clarify: about 1 out of every 3 times I enter text on any type of web site, or forum such as this, after entering and pressing POST, it erases all of the text. I am using 2.1v2 and had this problem before I updated. I am also using swype lite.

Opera Mobile 10.1 Beta Brings Turbo-Powered Browsing to Android. This is supposedly different than what's in the market. This forum is stale lately, so let's mix it up.I still like XScope, but Firefox is promising, and though I have NEVER been a fan of Opera, I am gonna try it.The one touch pinch zoom on Xscope is really tough to give up

I can't get a fully functioning data connection on my Galaxy S through my current SIM card. I can browse with Opera (which doesn't seem to care what the APN settings are) but nothing else works, (unless I get a wifi connection, which works fine). The problem may or may not disappear when I move countries soon (to Indonesia) but I'd like to understand what's going on.
I bought it in Singapore - it's got a SingTel setup (sticker on the back, boot screen, links on home) but it's supposed to be unlocked (and SingTel say they sell them unlocked too). A guy at the Samsung service center in Singapore said it was "locked" for other countries though because they don't yet have the Galaxy S - but once phone companies have the right settings for the phone it should be fine. I used it with a different Singapore phone company (StarHub) with a data plan for a couple of days that worked fine. I browsed and used the Google Maps app, no problem.
Then the problem. I came to Malaysia a week ago and bought a Maxis SIM card. At their service center they entered the APN settings (they already sell the Galaxy S), and the internet worked when I tested it on a few pages. 30 min later I tried again and got nothing, and it didn't come back. I returned to the service center, they made small changes to the settings, and it worked again... for a few minutes only. Then I discovered that I can browse in Opera - even if I use dummy APN settings (random numbers in one field and everything else blank or default).
However after I restarted the phone again, I couldn't repeat the success. I stopped unneeded apps, I uninstalled NimBuzz, I tried restarting over and over... but I get no connection other than with Opera. I've tried other internet apps (Maps, sync in GTasks, OkCupid, NimBuzz) and none work. Any clues as to what's going on?
