HTC EVO 4G :: Camera Stops Working - Would Open Then Immediately Close Down

Jun 24, 2010

This morning my camera and video camera would open and then immediately close down. I shut the phone down and rebooted. Camera still did not open. Next, I shutdown the phone and removed the battery. After a few moments, I reinstalled the battery and rebooted. The camera still would not open. I had to do other work, so I just set the phone aside for a few hours. When I came back, I tried the camera again and after a short pause it opened, but not as smoothly as in the past. It is still not opening as it should. First it displays a very quick view of the desktop with an error message. It goes too fast for me to read and then it opens the camera app.

Android :: Apps Crashing On Open File Dialog

Mar 26, 2010

I've been using a droid eris for a couple of months now and have loved the experience so far. Unfortunately, the honeymoon is over and I've been trying to do some productive things with it (outside of playing Robo Defense that is =p).I've been having problems opening different types of documents. My two biggest problems are with Quickoffice and PDF Viewer.When I launch Quickoffice, I get the "Open file" window which takes a few seconds to load and a few files begin to populate in the list. After just a couple of seconds, I get a force close message stating: Sorry! The application Quickoffice (process com.qo.android.htc) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" This same thing happens with the PDF Viewer as well.However, I can use a file manager like Linda Manager to browse to a specific file and then open it within the program just fine. I honestly don't know where to start

Android :: Displaying Progress Dialog From Open GL Thread

May 9, 2010

Does anyone have expirience with opengl-ui-opengl threading interraction? I'am developing a small opengl application. I'am a little bit confused with separate opengl thread. Currently, my application is logically separated in two parts - the controlling one and the rendering one. The controlling part interracts with user - accepting user input, changing activities, dealing with files and so on. The rendering part - just render everything it should. Ok, so when I need to load new texture to opengl (unfortunatelly its large and I cant reduce its size), I'd like to show a ProgerssDialog dialog. Trying to show it from the open gl thread brings me an exception: "Can't create handler inside thread that has not called Looper.prepare()". Because the initiator of loading is in the ui thread (for example - user selected a menu option), I'am opening the dialog, adding the load Runnable to stack on Runnables that will be called in Render.onDrawFrame and passing there a callback that will be executed after texture is loaded.

Android :: Update Text When Dialog Open And Dismissed In Thread

Aug 18, 2010

Look at my code.
- code -
private Handler handler = new Handler(); private ProgressDialog dialog;
final Runnable runInUIThread = new Runnable() { public void run() { dialog.dismiss();
} };
private void DoThis() {
dialog = new ProgressDialog(Main.this); dialog.setTitle("Title");
dialog.setMessage("Text"); dialog.show();
Thread newTask = new Thread() {
@Override public void run() { Looper.prepare(); DoThat();
handler.post(runInUIThread); Looper.loop();
); newTask.start(); } }

Is it possible to use test.setText("something") in this thread to update a Button text or TextView in the LinearLayout after the dialog is dismissed? I try cheating placing:
test.setVisibility(View.INVISIBLE);
test.setText("something");
test.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);
after dialog.show();
It kind of updated the text when the dialog open. I want to do it after the dialog was dismissed. What is the correct way to implement this in my thread?

Android :: Check Value Of ListPreference In OnResume()?

Oct 12, 2010

I have a ListPreference with the entries and entryValues correctly set. When I go in the prefernces activity and change the value it successfully works (I added a Toast to output the value after changing the option to test). But when I do the following to compare it, it always executes the else statment when I change it everytime, even like above when I changed the ListPreference and the value was "bluesky" it still failed to execute the correct if statement. Here's the code I use to check the value of the ListPreference in the onResume():

SharedPreferences prefs = PreferenceManager.getDefaultSharedPreferences(this)
String backgroundPref = prefs.getString("backgroundPref", "");

if(backgroundPref == "bluesky"){
mainLayout.setBackgroundResource(R.drawable.bluesky);
Toast.makeText(getBaseContext(), "Blue Sky", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}else if(backgroundPref == "sky"){
mainLayout.setBackgroundResource(R.drawable.sky);
Toast.makeText(getBaseContext(), "Sky", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}else{
mainLayout.setBackgroundResource(R.drawable.sunsetscene);
Toast.makeText(getBaseContext(), "Sunset Scene", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}

The Toasts are there so I can double check which statement gets executed, and it always seems to be the else one. Am I having a bad day and getting something wrong?

Android :: Calling Finish() In OnResume()?

Sep 8, 2010

I've been using code like: activity.finish(); activity.startActivity(new Intent(activity, activity.getClass()));

in two places: onResume(), and in an onClick() method of an AlertDialog. I'm getting the desired results when the code is called from onClick(), but I get mysterious null pointer exceptions while the runtime is trying to execute my onPause(). Is calling finish() from within one of the Activity lifecycle callbacks always a bad idea?

This code makes me nervous even though it works in the onClick(). After I call activity.finish(), I would think activity is in a questionable state by the time activity.startActivity() is invoked. Seems like an invitation to race conditions.

My use case is setting UI preferences (e.g. a different layout) in a PreferenceActivity. When I return to the main activity's onResume(), I check for preference changes and if a new layout is requested, I use the code snippet above.

Android :: AnimationDrawable : Can't Be Started In OnResume / Why Is So?

Jan 27, 2009

There's already been some discussion of this, in various lists and blogs. I finally got an AnimationDrawable to work, but I cannot start it from onResume. I can start it from a timer that onResume starts, or an onClickHandler.

I've poked around the source a bit and I can't figure out, specifically, what state the view has to be in, in order for the background AnimationDrawable to start.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Android :: Something Like An App Global OnPause() And OnResume()?

Jan 14, 2010

Is there something like an application global onPause() and onResume()?

My main activity listens for GPS fixes, which I want to continue working when switching to another screen/activity. Therefor I cannot unregister my LocationListener in the activity's onPause(). However I still want to unregister my GPS listener when switching to another application (so save battery) and turning it back on when returning to my application, regardless what screen/activity the user is currently in. Any ideas?

Android :: Binding To Service In OnCreate() Or In OnResume()

Feb 20, 2010

I want to know what es the best place in an Activity to bind to a service? I saw examples doing it in onResume() and also in onCreate(). I was asking myself if it is not a problem putting it into onCreate(), cause in onPause() i will do a unbind to the service, so i dont get a serviceConnectionLeak, if i leave the activity. Now if i press the Home-Button and then switching to the HomeScreen, the Activity will unbind from the service, when i go back to the Activity from the Taskmanager, then onCreate() will not be called and if the Code is trying to access a function from the service i will get a null-pointer exception. If i bind and unbind only in onResume() and onPause() i dont have this problem.

Android :: OnPause / OnResume Activity Trouble

Mar 14, 2010

That works fine, but now I am trying to pause the application if the user presses the back button on the phone and then restart the timer from where they left off when they reopen the app.

From the Log.v() prints I see that the _timer_time_remaining variable has the correct number of seconds stored when onPause is called, but it is set back to 0 when onResume starts. Why does the variable get reset? I thought that the application would continue to run in the background with the same values. Am I missing something? This is all declared in a class that extends Activity.

Android :: How To Repeat Login Dialog And Progress Dialog?

Jan 25, 2010

I am having a problem about repeating Login dialog (an AlertDialog) and progress dialog, coordinating with http thread. I suppose repetitive Login dialog (if fail, continue) handling should be common and straightforward. I guess my approach must be wrong somewhere. I already spent 2 days on this and am desperate. So please help. User starts the app, the main activity starts.Show a login dialog (generated by the main thread, i.e. from on Create. The main thread then starts a wait_thread, which will wait for http to return data and check the data and decide what to do.After user input username/password and press login, a progress dialog starts.The progress dialog starts an http_thread to talk to the server and get replies. Once done, it will notify the waiting thread.If the user type in the right username password first time, the code works fine.But it always fail for 2nd time Login, i.e. When first login fail(wrong username/ password),the wait_thread will generate 2nd Login dialog to let user repeat the login process. But after user hit the login on this 2nd Login dialog, the system always crashes.

Android :: Showing Dialog After Another Dialog Hangs

Sep 2, 2010

I have a really weird problem, which I am unable to debug so far. thing is. my app needs to download something to work. So in the beginning of the onCreate() method, I check if that something is already downloaded. If not, I pop a dialog up asking the user to download it.My dialog is shown and I am clicking, so aManager.install() is called. I am passing the context because that aManager.install() pops up a ProgressDialog to show downloading progress and spawns a new thread in which everything is downloaded. So obviously before creating my dialog I make a Handler to receive the response from that aManager.install(). And the response MAY vary, because for example the internet connection isn't available (Exception raised and catched and listener called with different code).Now, when that happens (Exception) I would like to call another dialog saying "something went wrong, would you like to retry?" so another call to showDialog(DIALOG_REINSTALL) (this time with another code).thing is the showDialog() gets called (I can verify this by logging) but the dialogs doesn't show up. Instead my application JUST HANGS Does someone have a clue why it's doing this? No exception raised, absolutely nothing from logcat, I can't tell WHERE it's hanging...just see that the method is called and the dialog should be displayed.

Android :: Calling Method From Service Immediately

Sep 3, 2010

I'm pretty sure that android services are going to be the end of me.I have almost no hair left after the last few days.At first I was having a heck of a time getting the service to bind on an onclick of a button, got that straightened out from help here yesterday. Now I actually want the service to bind in the onCreate() method of the activity. That part is no problem, works as intended.My service is actually a socket service to connect TCP sockets to a socket server that I wrote.If I put the call to the method from the bound service mBoundService.StartSocketServer() inside a button click, bingo, works great. But I need this to fire up immediately when the activity loads, so directly under my bindService() call within my onCreate() method of the activity.When I place the call to start the socket inside my onCreate() I get a force-close.

This method (StartSocketServer()) spawns a new thread then opens the socket on that thread to my remote machine.I'm guessing that the problem lies with the new thread generation before the activity fully loads not sure.LogCat is fairly cryptic here. It does say something about thread attach failed, then shows an uncaught handler exception that has "Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException" within it.Again, if I put this call to the method inside a button click, I"m in business, if it's in the onCreate() it fails. Is there some way inside an activity (presuming that my assumption is correct that it needs to fully load before spawning a new thread) to call the StartSocketServer() after it's loaded: ala body.onLoad() in html?
