Android :: Translucent Activity Not Calling OnStop On Exit

Dec 3, 2009

I'm having this strange issue where upon exiting a subactivity that is translucent (android:theme="@android: style/Theme.Translucent" ) the onStop() method doesn't appear to be called. have a TimerTask that runs and is supposed to be terminated when the subactivity ends in the onStop() method, but I'm instead left with an orphaned thread running in the background. It go particularly bad when I ran the subactivity several times. When I revert to no theme, the onStop() method is called and the activity behaves properly. Is there something I missed about how Translucent activities'lifecycles differ from standard activities?

Android :: Starting Translucent Activity From Broadcast Receiver

Sep 30, 2010

I got a graphical problem regarding the Translucent theme at Samsung Galaxy i9000.It works well in the emulator with android version ranging from 1.6 to 2.2 as well as on SE x10 mini.I have yet to test on more devices.I am starting an activity from a broadcast receiver. The activity started got the theme @android:style/Theme.Translucent If all the activities in my application are destroyed when the broadcast occurs, then the new activity got a working translucent theme and is presented on top of the activity currently in front. However, if the user left the application with the HOME-key, not destroying the activity, I get a graphical bug when the broadcast triggers. The application gets brought to the front with the activity the user last visited showing instead of the new activity that I started from my broadcast receiver. When I press the back key I can see my Translucent activity quickly showing itself and then getting destroyed.This flow results in the graphical bug: Start application. Activity A will be shown. Leave application by pressing HOME-key. Home screen is shown. Trigger broadcast. Start activity B.

Application gets brought to foreground and activity A is shown. Press BACK-key. Activity B quickly shows itself and disappears. Now activity A is shown.Also, after activity B is started and when activity A is shown in its place. Pressing the screen will triggers buttons that belong in activity B even if the user can't see them. If I remove the theme, then activity B will show itself when it's supposed to.Is there anyone else who have encountered a similar problem? Is there any good workarounds I can apply? (I don't want to rebind home to finish all activities) Is the problem my fault or can there possibly be some glitch in Touchwiz?

Android :: Open Dialogue Activity Without Opening Main Activity Behind It

Jul 19, 2010

Im writing a program that offers a quick reply dialog upon receipt of an SMS.

However, I am getting an unexpected result. When I receieve an SMS, the appropriate dialog activity comes up displaying the correct phone number and message, however there is a second activity behind it that is the 'default' activity in my program (it is what opens when i launch my application)

I do not want this second activity to come up. The quick reply activity should come up by itself over top of whatever the user was doing before.

The 'floating' activity:

The call to the activity inside an onReceive()

Android :: Apps Crashing On Open File Dialog

Mar 26, 2010

I've been using a droid eris for a couple of months now and have loved the experience so far. Unfortunately, the honeymoon is over and I've been trying to do some productive things with it (outside of playing Robo Defense that is =p).I've been having problems opening different types of documents. My two biggest problems are with Quickoffice and PDF Viewer.When I launch Quickoffice, I get the "Open file" window which takes a few seconds to load and a few files begin to populate in the list. After just a couple of seconds, I get a force close message stating: Sorry! The application Quickoffice (process com.qo.android.htc) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" This same thing happens with the PDF Viewer as well.However, I can use a file manager like Linda Manager to browse to a specific file and then open it within the program just fine. I honestly don't know where to start

Android :: Displaying Progress Dialog From Open GL Thread

May 9, 2010

Does anyone have expirience with opengl-ui-opengl threading interraction? I'am developing a small opengl application. I'am a little bit confused with separate opengl thread. Currently, my application is logically separated in two parts - the controlling one and the rendering one. The controlling part interracts with user - accepting user input, changing activities, dealing with files and so on. The rendering part - just render everything it should. Ok, so when I need to load new texture to opengl (unfortunatelly its large and I cant reduce its size), I'd like to show a ProgerssDialog dialog. Trying to show it from the open gl thread brings me an exception: "Can't create handler inside thread that has not called Looper.prepare()". Because the initiator of loading is in the ui thread (for example - user selected a menu option), I'am opening the dialog, adding the load Runnable to stack on Runnables that will be called in Render.onDrawFrame and passing there a callback that will be executed after texture is loaded.

Android :: Update Text When Dialog Open And Dismissed In Thread

Aug 18, 2010

Look at my code.
- code -
private Handler handler = new Handler(); private ProgressDialog dialog;
final Runnable runInUIThread = new Runnable() { public void run() { dialog.dismiss();
} };
private void DoThis() {
dialog = new ProgressDialog(Main.this); dialog.setTitle("Title");
dialog.setMessage("Text"); dialog.show();
Thread newTask = new Thread() {
@Override public void run() { Looper.prepare(); DoThat();
handler.post(runInUIThread); Looper.loop();
); newTask.start(); } }

Is it possible to use test.setText("something") in this thread to update a Button text or TextView in the LinearLayout after the dialog is dismissed? I try cheating placing:
test.setVisibility(View.INVISIBLE);
test.setText("something");
test.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);
after dialog.show();
It kind of updated the text when the dialog open. I want to do it after the dialog was dismissed. What is the correct way to implement this in my thread?

Android :: Spinner Selection Box On Activity And Dialog

Jun 22, 2010

I have a spinner selection box on my activity, but now I want to remove the spinner from the main view and make the selection available by an option from the menu button. How do I get the dialog the spinner shows if I click it without having the spinner? Currently I fill the spinner using a SimpleCursorAdapter like this:

Cursor c = db.fetchAllSets();
SimpleCursorAdapter adapter = new SimpleCursorAdapter(this android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item, c, new String[] { DatabaseAdapter.SET_KEY_NAME }, new int[] { android.R.id.text1 });
adapter.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item);
mSetsSpinner.setAdapter(adapter);

So now I'm planning to remove the spinner from my activity, add a new button to the menu and in the onOptionsItemSelected(...) show a dialog with the list of available selection - just the way it is right now after clicking the spinner object.

Android :: Force Dialog Themed Activity To Be Modal

Feb 11, 2010

A button on our screen causes an activity to be shown that has a "dialog" theme. We are having an issue were if you click the button quickly twice in a row, the dialog activity is opened twice.

Typically I would expect that when a new activity is started, the underlying activity is immediately stopped, and thus accepts no further input.

However, since the dialog themed activity does not take over the whole screen, I think the underlying activity is only paused, not stopped and thus the buttons are still accessible.

Which brings me to my question... Is there a way to force the dialog themed activity into a modal state where the user can't click the buttons on the activity below?

I could probably manually accomplish this by disabling everything in onPause, and reenabling it in onResume, but this seems like a lot of work!

But I want to do control the dialog, so I've to do it programmatically. Basically I want to modify this property of dialog: mCanceledOnTouchOutside = true

This will make the dialog cancel itself when touched outside of it's bounds. (Basically I want to replicate the popup behavior). The issue is I can't simply create a dialog and set it's layout since I need a call to activity (to initialized datasets)
