Android :: No Auto Updates Or Release Notes For Market Apps
Oct 30, 2008
I have recently updated about 10 apps manually that I already had on my G1, since I saw them relisted in the market (again) but higher up on the "by date" tab. This system is horrid. If a user has an app and a new release comes online it should not only notify the user it should offer to auto update and the first screen that pops up should be a release notes screen so we know why it was updated and what to look for.Another more minor annoyance is that devs seems to lose track of download counts and comments in new vers. This is much more minor, but useful to both the community and the device. If anyone from Android peeks in here, hopefully this makes a list of suggested improvements.

So one of the cool things about Froyo is being able to check off Enable Automatic Update for market apps. So i have that checked off for like 80+% of my 80+ apps (that took a while to do let me tell you). Now i have had three apps have updates available since i checked off the box, yet they never actually automatically updated. I waited, hours, still never updated. Is there a setting i need to modify? Do i need to tell it what time of day to do it? Anyone else noticing this? I only really want it in apps that i don't care about reading the new features. But it is annoying that i have it enabled and it does nothing.

It used to be the market would separate apps that were approved for auto update from those that had disabled auto update set. One could then simply hit the Update All (for the group) button and it would update ONLY the apps that were auto update enabled. Over the past few months Play Store has changed their behavior in that it no longer separates the apps and will only enable auto updates for everything or nothing.
How can I hide or otherwise prevent these few apps that I do not want to update from being in the play store update list? As it is now, I have to selectively update each individual app from the list, skipping the few apps I do not want updated.
Currently on a Samsung GS3, rooted, stock.

I was wondering if it was possible to update an app that was not installed from the market through the market.I've downloaded free apps from the market, unzipped them and swapped out some image files, signed and reinstalled, but these apps no longer show up in the play store--when I try, it says that the app was not signed correctly.

My apps are all backed up to my sdcard. I don't need to *download* all of them after each wipe. It takes forever. How do I block this? It just starts automatically now (2.2 thing?).

Ok, there is literally no way that I'm the only one who has asked this question but I can't find the answer by searching. Here's my problem, after I flash my rom and restart my phone the market begins auto-downloading all the apps I previously had installed. I do not want this bc I use titanium backup for all of that.
I know I can avoid it temporarily if I skip entering my email address, but there has to be a setting for me to un check that will make it not try to auto download anything once I do add my account.
I'm sure you guys have all run into this by now, so can someone please tell me what setting will resolve this issue?

I was wondering what people do to limit the phones that can purchase my app on Android Market. I image I can limit this to some extent by using the API levels in the manifest but can I limit my app to just Droid/Milestone? I have only tested the app on these phones so I can't be sure that it will work on others. There are known issues with the Milestone and choosing an OpenGL config, among other issues, that I had to work around so it's not unreasonable that other phones can have similar issues. Also how do you do dynamic licenses via http post?

Been using SwiftKey beta since Swype stopped working consistently and I got a notice this to upgrade to a final version (directly in advance of the Market release next week. It's definitely worth and it's learned my input habits so I hit just one button for most words. Just thought I'd let other users know.

I have alot (and I mean ALOT) of apps on my Xperia, so I get around 5 app updates a day, which is now starting to agitate me because most of them are the same apps everyday needing updates.
Today I heard about an update for the market that includes an auto update feature for installed apps. But I, like many others, do not see this option on the market.
Does anyone have any idea how to get it? or if I can't get it, when can I?

I have set my updates for Peep and Facebook and Freindstream for every 30 mins, but in order for this to work I need to constantly be connected to wifi or mobile web. I am fine with this, but it makes the battery die so quickly. Any way I can make my phone auto connect to wifi or mobile web to do the updates, and then auto connect. Also, any decent facebook app that isnt the default one? I have also read that you can set different profiles up for work or home etc.

Any ideas for apps to sync notes you take on your phone or PC with the other? I'm really missing the ability to sync the Outlook notes. Ever notes is not ideal because it requires a 'net connection. I would even be open to a USB sync.

Anyone know if I release a test version of my app to some BETA testers without publishing it on the market, and later publish it on the market with an updated version number, if the BETA testers will then get a notification from the market that there is a new version available?

I uploaded a new release of my app.
I downloaded the new version from the Market to try it out and I got the new binary, it also state V1.3.0, which is the new version. The description is from the release before that.
Very strange. When looking at http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.newsrob I see the old version V1.2.1 and the old description.
When looking at a G1 where the old version is installed it doesn't provide me with the option to upgrade it.
I followed the same steps as the weeks before. The Market has changed and I could use new options (DRM, not paid as I am not from the US/UK), but I kept the old options.
Meanwhile the old description is also in the developer's console (which I will change again right away), but it says 1.3.0 and when re-uploading the apk it says "The new apk's versionCode (130) in AndroidManifest.xml must be higher than the old apk's versionCode (130).", which is fine, well kind of.

Does an app developer need to do something peculiar in code to get a newer version of an uploaded app to show up in the notification bar on installed users' phone?I am reading comments that vary wildly and I can neither determine if the message content I am reading is relevant or current. With the pace of change in Android, perhaps we should filter messages older than a year from results? :)

I am curious about the procedure for updating an app that was acquired off the market. Do you simply install over your existing app? And if so, what happens to your existing data?Is there a way to tie your installed apps to the market, so it can automatically check for updates? Any information is appreciated.

I want to release an app on the market. It uses nothing new from the 2.0 release like bluetooth for instance and it works well in every emulator using version 1.6 to 2.1.My question is upon version of the sdk should I distribute my application to make it compatible with all devices running 1.6, 2.0 or 2.1?I only have a physical device running 1.6 to test it, but as I say, it uses nothing fancy and works well on emulators using API levels 4, 5, 6 or 7.

I just bought my Droid X a couple of weeks ago (2.2 and Rooted). It wanted to do some auto app updates and I told it to do them all not sure if it was before or after that that I noticed a red light by the ear "piece/speaker" and the phone was on and a battery level warning came on which I thought was premature. I plugged in the power cord the light went to green and I looked over a few minutes later and it was dead. I could be a little off on what happened when but that's what happened.
It wont power on now and I've tried holding a few different buttons while powering on and still nothing. I did check the settings the other day and it was successfully backing itself up not sure how to use that backup though. I just looked over after typing this post and the Motorola "M" was on the screen but I couldn't get it to do anything so I pulled the battery and tried again to boot it and nothing.

is there a setting somewhere on the phone that controls how often the phone will check on the market for updates to apps you already have installed? If not, what is the default, as in how often does the phone check?
