Android :: Missing Functionality / Calendar / Unlocking?

Sep 1, 2010

So after 6! years of Nokia 6230, I finally bought an android phone - HTC Desire. And while of course this is like switching from a Peugeot to a Porsche, there are still some functions i was unable to find / figure out so far! I'll number my questions and edit in your solutions, because I'm sure future users will have similar questions.1. a REAL event reminder (calendar): True, i can choose between different sounds that remind my when something in the calendar is due. However, it only lets me choose options like "Ascend", "Freeze", "Facebook pop" and others which at most last 5 seconds. What I need is something that keeps beeping until I turn it off, like an alarm clock, or at least beeps really loud for more than a minute! 2. I can only choose from default settings when i set when to remind me of an event (5 mins, 10 mins, 24h...), on my old phone i was able to set a custom remind date+time, like "the day before at 9.15pm"! I'm sure this is possible as well in the Android calendar?3.Also very annoying in Sense: If I choose to lock my screen and use a drawing pattern to protect it, I have to FIRST drag the bar down and THEN draw the pattern to unlock, which is kinda unnecessary and very annoying, because I'm locking and unlocking my phone really often. Is there a way to disable the "unlock bar"?

Android :: Missing Network Functionality / Way To Fix?

Jul 31, 2010

Can any version of Android support simultaneous connections on both a mobile network (e.g. 3G) and a WiFi network? Here's the requirement: I want to connect to a local Wifi network of sensors/devices that is not connected to the Internet, and be able to transmit data to an Internet-connected web server. Obviously quite easy to do on virtually any platform in Java, but it seems that Android does not allow multiple networks/radios to be active at a time. Big flaw, IMO. Should be a configurable option to allow that. With Froyo and mobile hot spot functionality, clearly it is *technically* possible to do, but I don't want to be the Wifi "host", but rather, a "connected client" to another Wifi network, and then do web requests over the 3G network.

Android :: 2.2 (Froyo) SQLite Missing IN Clause Functionality?

Sep 29, 2010

Recently I updated my Nexus One to Froyo (2.2) and I've noticed some significantly different behavior with SQLite. For example, I had been using a subquery (returning string data) as part of an IN clause, and the subquery portion no longer appears to function correctly. I've attached an example SQL query working with the contacts database below (Direct query shown for illustrative purposes only):

SELECT _id FROM data WHERE display_name IN (SELECT display_name FROM contacts); Up until Android 2.1 this was not a problem. After the update however, this returns an empty record set unless I run the subquery separately, surround each of the resulting values in single quotes and append those values directly into the IN clause. I have noticed this loss of functionality in multiple applications I'm working on, but I should note that it does appear to work when the results would be numeric rather than string based.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Immature OS - Can't Lock Screen While In Call - Obvious Functionality Is Missing?

Oct 23, 2009

Here are the issues I am having:

1. Can't lock screen while in a call. Red button just hangs up the call.

2. Apps cannot be installed to sd card. Internal Phone Storage after a device wipe shows about 136MB free. I downloaded about 5 or 6 apps and the phone ran out of room. I deleted the apps, but the space was not reclaimed. This is why I had to reset the device. Now I am afraid to install apps without filling it up again.

3. Bluetooth does no always connect back to my headset. sometime I have to turn on/off bluetooth on phone. Sometimes I have to reboot phone. One time I installed Pandora and bluetooth would not work until I figured out that removing Pandora would fix it.

4. Camera is no good.

5. WIFI cannot connect to an N router running in mixed mode (a,b,g,n). You must "dumb" down the router to b,g mode in order to connect the phone. This means hat other users who have no issues with N have to suffer the reduced speed of b,g.

6. No way to "EXIT" an app to reclaim RAM.

7. KB not as accurate as the iphone.

8. I have disabled HTC Sense and it is still slow. For example, often when I load favorites, nothing displays for about 3-4 seconds. This is not acceptable.

Overall, not a very tested or mature OS. I feel like I should not be starting from scratch like this. The folks at Android are guilty of using the consumer as a guinea pig. This is not acceptable. We are not reinventing the wheel, so why are obvious features missing?

Android :: Google Calendar Missing

Aug 30, 2010

I have several Google Calendars that I sync with my DROID Incredible running 2.1 update 1. One of my calendars recently quit showing up its data, although I have it selected on the phone AND all data displays fine on Google Calendars. I have tried reselecting some of the other calendars in case Android had a max number it would display. I have deselected and reselected the calendar on Google thinking that may refresh it but still no luck. Funny thing is, the calendar used to show up fine. Don't know when I lost it exactly. Any ideas?

Android :: Some Missing Google / Calendar Syncs

Nov 25, 2010

I posted this in the HTC Desire Tips and Tricks forum but think that may have been the wrong place, so trying here.I entered a years worth (2011) of appointments in Google calendar; mainly on Sundays but a few other days as well.I then left the automatic sync with my HTC Desire to update the phone.I was then looking at the appointments when I noticed that some had not synced. These are all those whose date in 2011 is later than this years date e.g. an appointment in Google for Sunday 20th November 2011 has synced to my Desire but the appointment from 27th November 2011 has not;nor have those for the rest of the Sundays in 2011.Over the two last days I have also done several manual syncs and rebooted phone. Some weeks ago I entered an appointment for 2012 and this has synced. I also brought forward a lot of appointments from my Palm TX, most for 2010 but one for July 2015, and these all synced.

Today I added two more appointments. On before 24th November 2011 and one after; the one before synced but the one after did not. I have also deleted one of the missing appointments from Google and re-entered it; still not on my Desire even after a manual sync.Is it possible that the Desire has a limit of say the number of entries or only one years worth from today's date (that does not explain the 2012 and 2015 appointments synced at an earlier time!)This morning I entered a further appointment for today and that has synced to my Desire. The others still not have.I also sync Google Calendar to Outlook on my Desktop; this has synced correctly.

Android :: Stock Calendar Missing Virtually All Data

In 2.1 my calendar is only showing back to July 12 depute there being several years of data prior to that. Entries made in the phone do not show up in Google. Entries manually made now, say 7/4 (prior to the 'cutoff' I am seeing in the calendar app) appear immediately in the phone. Any ideas why I am missing all this data? I've tried re-syncing w/ no luck.

KitKat 4.4 :: Exchange Server - Missing And Duplicated Calendar Events

Jan 15, 2014

I just got a Motorola Moto X with Android 4.4. I set up my work's Exchange Server account on my phone and it syncs email correctly. However, most calendar events are missing. The calendar events that do appear on my phone begin to duplicate every time the phone syncs to the server. These duplicates do not appear when I access my calendar online or on my laptop.

The only trend I see is that any event added after I got my new phone will sync and then duplicate. Older events either do not sync at all, or do sync but then don't duplicate.

Touchdown does work correctly, but I also use Google Calendar so I need all my events to be access by the Android's native calendar application, so Touchdown is not the solution for me.

I have already done the following with no success:

1. Deleted and re-created the Exchange account on my phone.
2. Logged into the web interface for my work's owa server and deleted extra devices/phones configured to sync to the server (based on this thread: Duplicate email/calendar/contacts for Exchange ... | T-Mobile Support)
3. I have already cleared data and caches in my calendar apps, then re-synced.

It's a massive bummer for a scheduling bug like me not to have access to a reliable calendar.

Android :: Calendar Sync Option Missing In Android 2.2

Nov 9, 2010

I have a Droid X 2.2. I noticed that the option to sync with google calendar is missing on my phone. I have done quite a bit of research and tried what others have suggested. Here's what I've tried so far:

- Clearing the "Calendar Storage" and then creating another google dummy account as many suggested.
- Adding an event to the Calendar. I couldn't - it kept asking me to sync with a calendar account first. In the settings within the Calendar, when I checked Accounts, there was no accounts to add, neither could I add one.

The weirdest thing I found is that I don't have the same phone options as many online posts say I should have. At the Home > Settings > Accounts & Synchronization, I have only Accounts but no Synchronization. Is there an alternative like not using Google calendar but some other online calendar to sync?

General :: Outlook Calendar Message Invite Missing Date / Time On Droid Mail

Nov 14, 2011

I switched recently from a black berry to an Android 2.3 powered device - Samsung Stratosphere on Verizon.

Email invite messages from Outlook for meetings do not show the calendar detail. Specifically, I can not see the date and time of the meeting invitations. I can perform actions to "Accept", "Decline", or Tentative" the meeting invitation. Unfortunately, there isn't any meeting detail so I don't know when the meeting is scheduled.

This is very frustrating and makes the Samsung Stratosphere or possibly the Android platform not fit for corporate environments. If I can not get this to work I will be switching to an iPhone and I will recommend to my entire corporate enterprise that we avoid Android based Smart Devices.

The Black Berry BEZ environment also provided information on meeting conflicts when you are sent a meeting invitation.

Android :: Use Connectbot / Ssh Functionality In Own App?

Oct 28, 2010

First, I'm new to Java and Android Development so I hope you're patient with me :)

My aim in my first app is to establish an ssh-connection to my linux machine running openssh and sending commands to it on the one hand and receiving stdout on the other hand.

Since there is an app for doing all the ssh that absolutely benefit to my needs, (connectbot) I thought it would be the best not reinventing the wheel and using connectbot for sending commands.

As I read there is a general mechanism in android to do so called intents. And I found that connectbot seems to offer such intents, but I don't feel able to use them at the moment and I'm not quite sure if it it works that way in general:
http://www.openintents.org/en/node/102

As I said I'm new to Java and android and only did a few hello world examples using these great xtensivearts video tutorials:
So its a bit hard for me to get started the right way. What do I want to do exactly?

Simply onpressbutton in my app -> sending a certain command in the background to the ssh-connected machine via connectbot or anything that can provide that.

In further development I would like to get data from the ssh-connected machine (stdout would be enough due to I could handle the output server-sided)

All this has to take place in the activity of my app. Even username and password should be configured via the settings of my app.

It simply should use the basic features of ssh via connectbot.

I would be really happy if you could help me getting started right with this issue. I know it sounds a bit hard for the first app but I really need ssh in my app cause it would greatly facilitate the server sided development.

Android : Need Opinions Regarding EVO 4G's GPS Functionality?

Jun 5, 2010

My first smartphone was the first generation iPhone which I still use to this day. With the release of the EVO 4G and the coming release of the 4th generation iPhone, I am excited by the choices I have.

Let me explain: I love how the GPS works on my friends 3GS iPhone. I love the way you can find yourself on the map and the little dot moves along the street with you.

Questions:

1.) Does the EVO 4G have a function like that?

2.) The only Youtube videos I can find regarding the EVO 4G's GPS function are all related to driving. Can anyone link me to a video of a person using GPS while walking around?

3.) I would like your opinions regarding the EVO 4G's GPS functionality.

In closing: I will be honest here, if the GPS experience on the EVO 4G is not as sexy as on the iPhone, I probably will end up purchasing the iPhone. I will admit though, the EVO 4G sure is a powerhouse of a smart-phone.

Android :: Request For Shake Functionality

Nov 21, 2009

The things that sometimes a brute force shake would be most helpful for and that I would pay money to have my phone do:

1. Shake to full brightness. When it's too bright to see the screen, it's a PITA to try to get the brightness turned up.

2. Shake to current phone call. Occasionally, I exit the phone app and it's frustrating not to be able to hop back over there quickly.

3. Shake to unlock. It's annoying to always be swiping when I just want to quickly check something on my phone. A quick shake would be much easier as an option.
