Android :: Developing Smartphone App On Which Devices Suggest To Check App?
Aug 18, 2010
Before publishing a new app on the market, on which devices would you suggest to check whether it runs fine or not? What are your experiences? How do you handle this?Are there some empirical values, for example, do applications that run smoothly on a HTC Desire behave similar on all HTC devices? Are there some devices on which the app should definately be checked?I like to picture myself releasing a high quality product instead of throwing some crap on the market. :) But I suppose I am not the only one who cannot buy like 5 or more devices just to ensure that the apps works fine on every kind of device.

I have been developing an Android application for about two months now, and the guy I'm writing it for wants me to use this instead of the android SDK so we can deploy the application for multiple smart phones: http://rhomobile.com/ he says you can write the application in one language and it can be deployed for most smart phones. Has anyone used this website to do something similar? Any advantages or disadvantages I should know about and tell him? Maybe someone could give me a better explanation on what this really does. I'm current a one man army. He wants the application out for most smart phones but can afford to hire more developers.

I am a student at a technical university in Finland, and Im currently working on a thesis about how suitable Android platform is for multimedia devices other than smartphones or mobile handsets. Different manufacturers have been experimenting with Android for a while now, and have installed the platform onto new types of devices such as mobile internet devices (Archos 5), tablets (Vega), and even e-book readers (Barnes & Noble nook). Almost all of these manufacturers are also welcoming Android developers to create applications to go with their devices. Compared to the number of applications on Android Market, however, the manufacturers are still very much in the beginning stages with this. Im hoping to have some idea about what Android developer communities are thinking about this invitation, and so decided to post a poll about it on a few Android forums. Are you interested in developing applications for these kinds of devices, with larger screens and different capabilities from an average mobile phone? If its not too much trouble, Id also be interested in hearing a few words about why you think it would be a good or bad idea. How would it be different from developing for phones? What sort of problems or possibilities do you think would rise from it?

I am available for an annual upgrade on november 9 after. I looked online to make sure i would be able to get the DX on the 15th when it came out. it didn't look like i was able to get a smartphone for the 2 year contract price. so, i called customer service and they said that i am indeed able to upgrade on nov 9 but i'm not eligible for the early upgrade because i am currently a smartphone user.

Is it possible to reboot an Android smartphone as a non-smartphone(Like a Nokia 1100) ? Just enable only services to make phone calls and everything else remain disabled(Slow down the CPU to the lowest clock speeds, lower bit depth, turn off all on-board electronics other than those necessary etc). Motivation is to save power. In my phone most of the power is consumed by Android OS (and not screen). I was wondering if I had a mode like that I could keep the phone alive in case I can't charge the phone immediately, by switching into this power saving mode.

First of all, I just want to say I am a software developer, but I am not an Android developer. However I usually walk around and think on stuff. AndI've been recently thinking all the news concerning how fragmented Android is getting, with different Android versions and tweaks by different phone manufacturers, and then for developers you have different size formats. An example would be that HTC Tattoo might not be able to run everything that another phone might run, due to different screen formats, etc. And now the Android tablets are coming with different Android versions and different screen sizes, all from 5" to 11". Will this make developing Android applications harder? Apple has it safe here since they manufacturer all devices that run the iPhone OS: the pods, phones and now the pad so they can easily control and make sure not to loose any customers by introducing a new device. When Apple introduced iPad they had to make sure that all the old iPhone applications would work on the iPad. They solved that neatly by saying that iPhone applications will simply be stretched out to the double size and it would fit on the iPad. Unfortunately Android does not have the same luxury to do this. As I said, I am not an Android developer. Just a curious software developer For you guys who work actively in the Android community, does Google have a solution for this? Will you be able to run phone applications on the tablets? Is there a bridge between the devices? Are there any standardizations or will Android development become even more fragmented? you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Developers" group. I am not allowed to post more than one hyperlink. But Amazon carries this book as well. I am picking these two books because of another popular thread saying I should have an Android book and a java reference but no one mentioned a book for either. I figured I'd go with the highest rated in for each of those criteria.I didn't know if I could ask a question in the same thread about what books so I figured it was better to start a new one. Code...

I have been looking for a easy way to add borders to custom made Views (Compounds or whatever), and the only answer I found was that there is no built-in support for that. Instead there are suggestions that you should add Views on top/below the View you want borders on and a bunch of others really messy ways to get borders.oming from the .NET-environment that is pretty brutal to have to do ugly workaround and "hacks" to get something as simple as borders.Thus, I want to suggest that feature to the Android team. Im not sure how they can have missed it, but it is surely missed, So, is there any official way to suggest a feature in the SDK/framework? I have looked around a bit, but cant comment on their blogs, no e-mail addresses as far as I can see.

This is my 1st thread so i am very sorry if this is in the wrong place or i have done something wrong so just be gentle with me Well I live in the uk and I am going to get a htc desire on contract and i was wondering which networks you would recommend? In terms of 3g coverage but mainly 2g coverage (calls and texts) also is there a particular network that brands the desire the least and is quickest when releasing updates for it. (By the way i am a complete noob this will be my 1st android phone so please don't suggest debranding or rooting as i wont do as i would just break it)

First of all I'd like to point out that I have posted this in the HTC Desire section because I'm not sure whether my problem is Android or HTC Sense related.I have linked my contacts to their facebook profiles so I can see thier pictures awesome.Except that whenever I compose a new text message and click on the people icon, I get a list of every single one of my facebook friends, and multiple entries for each - one for email, phone etc.Except obviously I only want to text one of the people in my contacts, but keep slecting someone's email address that they've listed on facebook, or the wrong person who shares the same first name. This is highly frustrating - random people appearing in my message recipients list is something I have never had to deal with before in my 10 years as a mobile phone user.

I am loving my Eris and looking forward to the Dec 11 update.
I am just wondering if the auto-suggest dictionary is user-modifiable. I use compact QWERTY (like SureType on BB). When I type "we", what comes out is "qe" which is the default word it wants to use. Perhaps I used it once and saved it? How can I delete the words I don't want popping up anymore (especially the ones I may have added)?

I am developing my am on mac (10.5.8), on eclipse and SDK 1.6 and a Vodafone HTC Magic Everything was working ok up to a few days ago. I can not see my device on adb devices. I also got a Sony Xperia and I can not see it on the list either. I upgraded the phone software (the HTC) to 1.6 a few days ago. Maybe that is what caused the change, but I could not be sure.

I just realized that I posted my last thread in The Lounge rather then Android Lounge which I intended to Makes sense why I haven't gotten any replies. Anywho, this is what I posted earlier Just signed up for your forum to ask for your recommendations for my first smartphone. Now, I'm leaning towards an android mainly because I don't want an iPhone and it seems like it has some great feature as well as a lot of potential.Now, the only issue is that I live in Canada and I'm with Rogers. (Sim cards)My current criteria is that I want a touch phone and it has to support a sim card. External qwerty keyboard is a bonus!I'm sure you all get requests like this all of the time but some help selecting a new phone would be great. I tried doing my own research on what phone to buy but I'm really not great with hacking phones and whatnot to make things work with my carrier but I'm willing to try.tl;dr:Need smartphone with sim card and touchscreen.

I am a Windows nerd. What I will be using the phone for:
-> Calendering, Contact Management, Outlook 2010 syncing, light email and texting, and few phone calls.
-> Printing to networked printer (wlan)
-> SSH to home computer when I am away. (maybe VPN as well).
-> managing ms office docs, pdfs and printing them to a networked printer (wlan)
-> Change the device's mac address to connect to wifi network.
-> very little "internet browsing."
-> t-mobile
-> some type of "file management" / "file browsing" is a must!
-> keepassdroid + browsing banking sites

Menu - Settings - Location - Enable GPS satellites
It states that enabling this will "require more battery plus view of sky"
When checked, it states "deselect to conserve battery"
So, the question is, should this be enabled?
I imagine for some applications, knowing your precise location should be useful, especially if the turn-by-turn maps are installed and used.
I'm thinking to deselect this, and selecting it at times when I need it.
So, to check or not to check?
