I have an screen that displays all the names in the Contacts in a ListView. When the user clicks on a name, I want to launch another Activity which display the details of the selected Contact (Phone number/ email) in another screen. How do I display details for the selected row. (i.e When starting the intent how do I send over the row_id of the item selected)?
I've tried the following code:
Intent i = new Intent(this, ContactDetails.class);
startActivity(i);

I want to create an app or background service that just listens for the launch of a 'default' app, say Contacts or the built-in Gmail app. If the contact app is clicked, I want to transfer control to my app temporarily (e.g. present a Yes/No popup to the user or increment an internal counter of my app ) and then redirect the user back to the app that was clicked. I want to do this only for a couple of 'well-known' built-in default apps, not any third party apps..

The default behavior of an activity when BACK softkey is pressed is, GO BACK TO PREVIOUS ACTIVITY. If some the same activity is waiting for some response from server or some data updation is going on and then press BACK, I want to wait on the same screen till the current task is completely processed and then move out to the previous activity.

I have a need to create a background service that starts up during the system boot up, and keeps running until the device is powered down. There is no UI or Activity associated with this. I created a class extending the android Service class, and added the setttings to the AndroidManifest.xml file. When I launch this service in the emulator, I don't see this launched at all. I have overrided almost all the methods in the Service class to put log statements, but none of them shows up.

Is there way to dump the current screen to a bitmap in Android?
And what about dump screen of other applications? For example, running a service background, the foreground app could send an intent to start the service, and capture the current screen and save as a bitmap.

I am desperately trying to get my head wrapped around how to implement home screen widgets. Right now, I (finally) was able to get a button on my widget respond to a button press setting up an intent filter in the manifest.
However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to launch an activity when the button is pressed. Basically, here's the code i have...
What I really want to do, though, is start a new activity, not display a toast message. I know it has something to do with pending intents, but I can't figure out how to get that to work.

I have been looking for this for a while but I can't find any way of doing it. A contrived example would be a service that simply displays the name of the current running activity as an Ongoing Notification. For instance, when the user is reading a particular email, the name of the activity (hopefully the email title!) would appear in the notifications window and when the user switches to read a text message, the notification would change to show the name of the new activity. Is there a way to do this in Android?

I want to get the current focus view in my Service to check the view is a EditText and append some texts in it (for all EditTexts, not only in my application).
I found some methods to do this, like Activity.getCurrentFocus() and Windows.getCurrentFocus(). But these methods are used in a Activity.
How can I use these methods in a Service? Or is there another way to do?

My app is comprised of a set of reusable Activities that other apps can reuse. For various reasons, I would like my Activities to be launched in context of the invoking Activity's process, instead of always being launched in my Activity's process (default behavior on Android). How can I achieve this?

I wish to have one application that runs in the background, which knows when any of the built-in applications (messaging, contacts, etc) is running. So my questions are: How I should run my application in the background. How my background application can know what the application currently running in the foreground is.

I have a Service that I am running in the background every minute. It's an IntentService and I start it like this:
Code:
Intent i = new Intent(context, GPSTracker.class);
PendingIntent pi = PendingIntent.getService(context, 0, i, 0);
AlarmManager alarmManager = (AlarmManager) context.getSystemService(Context.ALARM_SERVICE);
[code]...
That works, my Service is being run every minute (give or take a couple seconds for some reason) whether the app is up, closed, the phone is sleeping, whatever. how I should be getting the current location from this Service. I'm attempting to use LocationListener and a mix of getLastKnownLocation and hoping onLocationChanged will be called.
I think my problem is, onLocationChanged is barely getting called. Everytime the service runs and I do getLastKnownLocation I send a message to my database to check, I send a different message everytime onLocationChanged is called. I went to the store and back and getLastKnownLocation was called a few times, but onLocationChanged was only called once and it was incorrect. getLastKnownLocation always seems to be incorrect to.
Code:
protected void onHandleIntent(Intent intent) {
Log.i(TAG, "In onHandleIntent!");
Location currentLocation = getLocation(this);
if(currentLocation == null) {
saveLocation(-8.0, -8.0, "nothing", "nothing", "nothing");
[code]...

any easy way to record the activities and views on my Android app to a video without root access. To be a bit more specific, I am looking for a screen-recording solution so that I can get a video of the user's interaction with the app interface. Connecting the phone to any device such as a computer to do the recording is not an option.
Here is a sample gif that I created using a Mac screen recorder to record the iOS simulator interface. It gives a rough idea of what I would like to achieve on Android, except for the fact that I would like the same to be from the actual phone (not the emulator) and without having to connect the phone to a computer or any other device.

is it possible to manually rotate the screen or fix the current screen orientation (with a key/button)? because it really annoys me having taken portrait pictures that cannot be viewed (with the media gallery application) in a portrait fashion on the milestone. this is because it always rotates the portrait picture back to landscape when rotating the milestone from landscape to portrait. right now there is no way of properly viewing portrait pictures on the milestone other than tilting your head (holding the milestone landscape and tilting your head along).this cannot be the way it was intended to be, right? or do I have to get a different viewing software which allows you to choose screen orientation? is there such an app?
