Apologies if this has already been posted, but I did search the group before writing.
I am trying to launch an Android app via a hyperlink from an HTML site - i.e. tel:+448458001020 would call play.com from my phone upon clicking the button that has aforementioned hyperlink. Or putting a hyperlink on a button geo:0,0?z=17 opens up google maps on my phone with my location at a zoom of 17, mailto:n...@email.com would email and obviously http:// would take the user to another webpage.
Is it possible to launch an Android app already installed on the phone this way?

I have a need to create a background service that starts up during the system boot up, and keeps running until the device is powered down. There is no UI or Activity associated with this. I created a class extending the android Service class, and added the setttings to the AndroidManifest.xml file. When I launch this service in the emulator, I don't see this launched at all. I have overrided almost all the methods in the Service class to put log statements, but none of them shows up.

I want to create an app or background service that just listens for the launch of a 'default' app, say Contacts or the built-in Gmail app. If the contact app is clicked, I want to transfer control to my app temporarily (e.g. present a Yes/No popup to the user or increment an internal counter of my app ) and then redirect the user back to the app that was clicked. I want to do this only for a couple of 'well-known' built-in default apps, not any third party apps..

I just launched my app VLC Remote and was surprised to see that there isn't a way to post a link to the app on the market that works both on my android device and also in my browser.
-so I made a way, and I'm opening it up for all-comers.
What it does is lets you post an http link like this
http://and-download.hobbyistsoftware.com/android/download?name=VLC Remote&q=pname:com.hobbyistsoftware.android.vlcremote
If someone clicks on the link from an android device, then the link opens in the market. If they click from their computer, then it offers to send them a link by email (so they can click on the link on their device).
the download emails have a (subtle) advert for my app, but the feature is clearly your app!
details are here:[url]

I want to create an application that would display more lines of short text. That is all I want the application to do. For example:
line number one
line number two
line number three
line number four
line number five
Like that. I would like also to set background color. How can I do that? I would like to accomplish that using an external HTML.
I use Eclipse and SDK to develop apps and I am a complete beginner in Java.

I have heavily edited the original text and instead of the how question I am posting the code that produces the effect I wanted, namely a floating menu on top that stays fixed as I scroll whatever is in the middle with a lower menu at the bottom of the screen. Ain't life sweet - Might even work on the iPhone as well.
Why I posted was like I said in the original question. I'm fiddling with creating the initial lay out for a "mobile" application for the disabled, have tonnes of data, dictionary files, icons for the purpose etc. I want to have the app running as HTML to make it as portable as possible, i.e. make it runnable on Android, Iphone, Maemo... whatever.
I got some hints by looking at the example at http://www.quackit.com/css/codes/css_floating_menu.cfm as well as a lot of trial and error and finally minor edits by a paid freelancer.
Below you can find some crude (to put it mildly) HTML/CSS (cut the CSS part and load a style instead in the HTML's you create for cleaner code) but for now, let's look at the prototype concept.
CODE:...........
You can see the working example on your Android device or in your Android emulator http://globability.org/webapp/aaa.html
Need to get the sound working though - but nearly there :)Links to the different web based version and thoughts behind application can be found on:
The project this application springs from can be found on [url] - Look under prototypes (it is the top one under the heading protypes).

I added to the manifest file for the activity to be launched:
<intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.VIEW">
</action> <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT">
</category> <category android:name="android.intent.category.BROWSABLE">
</category> <data android:scheme="my_scheme"/> </intent-filter>
I load the link in WebView:
mWebView.loadData("<a href="my_scheme://launch_my_app/refresh_all ">Launch App</a>", "text/html", "utf-8");
When I click on the link I get the error -10 "The protocol is not supported" in My WebViewClient.OnReceivedError override.

I created an app with one activity, and it works just fine. Having though more about the app, I decided to add another activity which be the welcome screen of the app, with a nice logo and some buttons. This app should direct the user to the activity I mentioned before. The only trouble is - I can't find out where and how can I determine which activity should launch first, the moment the app loads. Do I need to create the entire app from scratch, but this time programing the home activity first?

I;ve been trying to create a custom button in android using this tutorial - http://www.gersic.com/blog.php?id=56
It works well but it doesn't say how to change the font size or weighting. Any ideas?
There was another question on here and the only answer was to use html styling but you can't change a font size in html without using css (or the deprecated font tag). There must be a better way of setting the pixel size of the font used on buttons?

I've run this on a device and on the emulator. The app stops unexpectedly on both. I have not a clue what is wrong currently. It uses Google API Maps I compiled with Google Api 7. I followed this tutorial:
http://developer.android.com/guide/tutorials/views/hello-mapview.html
I did use the correct API Key That the final apk is signed with. This is the source(If you compile it shouldn't work as it is unsigned). This is the compiled signed apk
