Android :: How To Launch External Activity In Current Activity's Process?

Aug 27, 2010

My app is comprised of a set of reusable Activities that other apps can reuse. For various reasons, I would like my Activities to be launched in context of the invoking Activity's process, instead of always being launched in my Activity's process (default behavior on Android). How can I achieve this?

Whenever the memory needs to be reclaimed, the process is being killed by Activity Manager Service in killPidsForProcess. I have a back button in my activity window on right corner of the title bar.

I want to kill the activity completely on clicking the close button. Can I reuse the same function and will it have any major effect? Please help me out in this.

Android :: Using Thread In Activity Or In Service?

Jun 12, 2010

In Virgil Dobjanschi's talk, "Developing Android REST client applications" (link here), he said a few things that took me by surprise. Including:
Don't run http queries in threads spawned by your activities. Instead, communicate with a service to do them, and store the information in a ContentProvider.
Use a ContentObserver to be notified of changes.
Always perform long running tasks in a Service, never in your Activity.
Stop your Service when you're done with it.

I understand that he was talking about a REST API, but I'm trying to make it fit with some other ideas I've had for apps. One of APIs I've been using uses long-polling for their chat interface. There is a loop http queries, most of which will time out. This means that, as long as the app hasn't been killed by the OS, or the user hasn't specifically turned off the chat feature, I'll never be done with the Service, and it will stay open forever. This seems less than optimal.

Long question short:
For a chat application that uses long polling to simulate push and immediate response, is it still best practice to use a Service to perform the HTTP queries, and store the information in a ContentProvider?

Android :: How To Establish A Two-way Communication Between Activity And Service In Different Process

Mar 19, 2010

I'm working on establishing a two-way communication between an Activity and a Service which runs in a different process.

Querying the process from the Activity is no big deal. But I want the process to notify the Activity on events. The idea behind it is this: the service runs independently from the actual app. It queries a webserver periodically. If a new task is found on the webserver the process should notify the activity.

I found this thread over at AndDev.org but it doesn't seem to work for me. I've been messing around with BroadcastReceiver. I've implemented an interface which should notify the Activity but the problem is that the listener is always null since the Broadcast from the process is done via Intent, hence the class that extends BroadcastReceiver will be newly instantiated.

How can I establish a 2-way communication? This has to be possible.

Android :: Way To Find Out Current Running Activity From A Service?

Aug 4, 2009

I have been looking for this for a while but I can't find any way of doing it. A contrived example would be a service that simply displays the name of the current running activity as an Ongoing Notification. For instance, when the user is reading a particular email, the name of the activity (hopefully the email title!) would appear in the notifications window and when the user switches to read a text message, the notification would change to show the name of the new activity. Is there a way to do this in Android?

Android :: Advice On Structuring A Service / Activity / Thread

Oct 5, 2010

can someone please help me? I would like to write a program which uses a service to periodically update a text view on an activity. I do this by having ActivityA with a 2 buttons to start/stop my service. In the service I run a timer which triggers every second. From here I need to have this launch and update a text view on ActivityB which at present is just a counter value.I'm sure there are likely better ways to do this, such as using only one activity, maybe using a thread but the main design consideration is to have the service running even if my activity is destoyed (the counter value would instead go trigger some alarm or file write instead of a text view update). Sorry for rambling. I find the android developer resources offer too many solutions!

Android :: Sync Between Local Service With Thread And Activity

Jun 1, 2010

I'm trying to think of a way on how to sync in between a local service and the main activity.

The local service has,

A thread with a socket connection that could receive data at any time.
A list/array with data.
At any time the socket could receive data and add it to the list.

The activity needs to display this data. So when the activity starts up it needs to attach or start the local service and fetch the list. It also needs to be notified if the list is updated.

I think I would need to sync my list somehow so the local service does not add a new entry to it while the activity fetches the list when connecting to the service.

Android :: Activity Bind To Service - Multiple Thread Design

May 28, 2010

A new question about android and services. Currently I'm developing a App that should send images to a server. It should also be possible to send more images parallel. I made a service that creates for every image a new image. The activity can bind to that service and gather information about the progress. I want to show the current status for every image in a notification (and when the user clicks a notification, an activity with the progress for that image should be shown). But I get several problems with that approach. There are errors with binding, the notification pending event starts the activity completely new, so I lose information about currently sending images and so on. How I could design in a appropriate way.

Android :: Remote Service Process Persists - I.e. Won't Disappear From Process Table

Feb 21, 2009

At a certain point in my program, when I'm completely done with my service, my activity executes unbindService() and stopService() -- yet the process persists. I can tell that it persists because I run "ps" in "adb -e shell":

CODE:.............

"adb logcat", I can show you the sequence of events:

ACTIVITY: context.unbindService(serviceConnection);

SERVICE: onUnbind();

ACTIVITY: stopService(serviceIntent); & returns true!

SERVICE: onDestroy();

First, my activity calls unbindService(serviceConnection). According to the documentation, unbindService() will "Disconnect from an application service. You will no longer receive calls as the service is restarted, and the service is now allowed to stop at any time." So that is fine, and it is happening.

Appropriately, we see the onUnbind() call happen on the service side. According to the documentation, onUnbind() is called when "all clients have disconnected from a particular interface published by the service." So this confirms the correct service connection is being passed, and that the service is responding accordingly.

Next, my activity calls stopService(serviceIntent), and returns true. According to the documentation, stopService() does the following: "If there is a service matching the given Intent that is already running, then it is stopped and true is returned; else false is returned." Again, this is happening and returning true.

In response, the service's onDestroy() method is called. According to the documentation, onDestroy() is "Called by the system to notify a Service that it is no longer used and is being removed. The service should clean up any resources it holds (threads, registered receivers, etc) at this point. Upon return, there will be no more calls in to this Service object and it is effectively dead."

At this point I expect the process to disappear from the process table. Yet it remains indefinitely. But why?

Also, the process is so persistent that I can bind to it again, and I see that it is the same exact process responding because the PID (process ID) is the same!

Android :: Two Threads And 1 Service / Or Service Per Thread?

Nov 20, 2010

what I'm trying to do here is implement something like a peer-to-peer client. Being that, it will start a client thread and a server thread.I know Services themselves run in the main GUI thread, so I'll have to start a couple of independent threads (or Asynctasks?) for each server and client. The only thing I'm not so sure about is if I'll better have 1 Service starting 2 threads, or maybe 2 services, each one of them starting their own thread.

Android :: Finish Activity Not Started From Current Activity

May 1, 2010

I have following problem with my application: From my main activity ("activity 1"), there is a menu from which user can launch an action. This action will result in an Intent being received by a BroadcastReceiver, defined in my application. Finally, this BroadcastReceiver will start an activity ("activity 2") to deal with this intent.

The problem is that I have a "quit application" entry in my menu, and I can only finish() currently active activity. ie I am not able to finish "activity 1" from the menu of "activity 2". And I can't use startActivityForResult() as "activity 2" can't be started from "activity 1". Any suggestion would be much appreciated Thank you very much guys, regards.

Android :: Application Service Ever Run In Different Process?

Apr 26, 2010

If an application begins a Service via bindService or startService, will this Service object ever run from a process different from that of the application? I ask because many Android example projects begin a service and communicate to them using IPC which seems wholly unnecessary considering that, according to the Android Service documentation, "... services, like other application objects, run in the main thread of their hosting process." IPC, AIDL, and the IBinder interface only seem useful if connecting to a Service started by an application other than your own. Is this a correct or fair understanding?
