Android :: Java For Beginners Books?
Sep 22, 2010
I've been looking into Android development, and while I understand the concepts, all of the Java stuff goes right over my head. XML is easy to pick up on, but I quickly found out that advanced Android development is simply not possible without a good understanding of Java. I looked at this book and it seems pretty good: http://www.amazon.com/Java-Tutorial-Short-Course-Basics/dp/0321334205. Is this good material for a true beginner, or will it be a little too advanced? I need something that will start out very slowly and explain the concepts, ideas and functions clearly. The last thing I want is a book that's incredibly complex and hard on a beginner. I have absolutely NO knowledge of Java or any coding, so I need to start with the basics. Is Android Java a lot different than regular Java? I know there are some differences, but if I studied regular Java could I quickly relate that to Android? I wouldn't want to read a Java book then get back into Android and be lost due to the changes. With this in mind please recommend me some books. I'm very enthusiastic about Android and have brilliant ideas for applications. I just need the prerequisites for Android before I can go full force.

I have a problem on my Asus ME301T tablet with the Play Books app (I'm running android 4.2). Regular text based books work just fine, however, comic books show as blank pages. Sometimes it will load a few pages if I rotate the screen a few times.
I've tried to reinstall the app and redownload the comics without luck. It works fine on my Samsung i9000 running android 4.3.

I am new to the Desire and I've seen some of the screens on some of the threads in here but I have no idea how to activate certain apps I've downloaded!?!?
I downloaded an alternative clock widget but couldn't see it in the list so don't know how to use it instead of the standard one for example!!
Can anyone point me towards an idiots guide to customization?

My wife and I are enthusiastic users of the Sprint Hero. I'm fascinated by the unbelievable level of functionality over the LG Rumor I was using before. However, I'm a newbie to smartphones and would like to know what the ROM 1.1 upgrade is all about and what benefits can be expected. I've read the post about how to do it....just want to know why.

DROID Eris Interactive "How To" Simulator. Beginners and just folks who might want a refresher on basics might like this interactive simulator for the Eris. A menu on the left with different tasks you may want to invoke starts the simulator. Each next step on the phone turns into a red clickable simulation of the button or menu item on the phone itself.

I know their are plenty of topics about how to root, what it does, and roms and everything. But I and others are a still a bit concerned I am sure. If you don't plan on helping or contributing to this then don't say their are plenty of topics on the site and other websites. I have read the forum on xda developers on how to root the CDMA Hero, but I am still a bit confused. If you root what are some benefits, I have heard sometimes the device runs alot faster and snappier, and I have heard it is slow and sluggish. Also what are some other things that can be tweaked/customized, I would want to do this to screen capture, change to a white taskbar, and maybe try and add a rom. What is the best method to changing Roms, what program do I need? Also is it possible that if I were to change roms to go back to the stock rom and stock settings without bricking or screwing up my phone. If anyone can give me the best method, and a 2.0 or 2.1 rom for the hero, I don't care if HTC sense is on their or not. I like 2.1 without it. Anyone who can give details on why I should, shouldn't would be greatly appreciated and I am sure many people would too. Anything that gives or lists benefits and things you can do if you root would be great. Also a link to the best forum or youtube video that gives detailed responses on step by step instructions on how to root for the Sprint CDMA Hero.

Android Beginners is no longer working so I have to post this here. Here's is the case scenario that I would like to do, but I've been googling with no luck. There's text info that the user saved on the drive.
1. I want to open up a dialog, for the user with a listing of the file structure
2. The user can then choose where to save the file
3. Then I want to save the file there
Can anyone offer me simple code for step 1,2,3 that I can use?

New to Android; very grateful for the help! I tried searching the web and other threads but the words "free", "ebook" and "library" return thousands of results that don't help. Supposedly at my library you can get books in ebook form. The website says they are compatible with my PC, the Nook and the Sony devices. Is there a way to read these on the Android and if so, how is that accomplished? Also, I read that you can read Google books on Android phones, but when I got to Opera on my phone and go to books.google.com/m and click on a book nothing happens.

I am not allowed to post more than one hyperlink. But Amazon carries this book as well. I am picking these two books because of another popular thread saying I should have an Android book and a java reference but no one mentioned a book for either. I figured I'd go with the highest rated in for each of those criteria.I didn't know if I could ask a question in the same thread about what books so I figured it was better to start a new one. Code...

I didn't see this posted anywhere here and thought it was cool. For those of you that like to read. (I totally copy and pasted this from the Tmobile forum.)Google has launched a mobile version of its Book Search application which gives Android and iPhone users access to over 1.5 million out of copyright texts from authors including Austen, Dickens and Shakespeare. Google has optimised the texts for iPhone and Android handsets, and users will need an internet connection to view them. The texts are separated under handy categories including General Fiction and Mystery, and the service keeps a list of recently viewed eBooks and allows you to bookmark your page.

I'm scoping a new software project and haven't had much experience with software development. This is a multipart question.
What are some recommended books for web application architecture?
We are basically looking to develop several front end applications (mobile and websites) that can query a central application pool that'll hit our backend database to retrieve the data. Is there a name for this kind of architecture?

I'm using Meridian to listen to audio books, but I would sure love to find a player that let's me choose when to start listening. Meridian remembers where I left off in a book, but one slight bump and it goes back to zero. Sure would be nice to have it start at "minute 210" or wherever.

Anyone know of a simple organizer app to keep track of books that you've read? I used to have a group in my contacts called strangely "books" on my BB storm. In the notes section I could keep an unlimited amount of information. Now on my Fascinate the notes section is limited and unusable for my needs.

Now the update for Laputa has come through I reads my library as empty, and there is no way to manually add the books already on my SD card. And failing that, anyone know of a good reader that actually works?

It seems amazon really makes things a little complicated trying to concert PDF files into ePub files and sync with the default kindle app. I cannot get kindle to recognize the books I converted for anything. I downloaded file explorer and I'm moving it into the kindle app and into the amazon android folder and no luck. Does converted PDFs to other formats know which folder it's supposed to go into?

I'm running an SGS2 with CM9 (always up to the latest nightly).
I noticed today then when trying to open the Play store, it takes me directly to the Apps section and doesn't let me choose between the normal Apps, Movies and Books sections that i could before (i'm in the UK so no music option ever existed).
If i go to Play Book or Play Movies and press the market button, same happens, it just takes me to the apps secions.
I've tried clearing data on all google play related apps and uninstalling the google play updates and rebooting etc but still, everytime it takes me directly to the apps section and doesn't let me access any other section...

Five years ago I used to program in SAS. Since then I've been doing software QA of various types. Mostly manual (video games + web apps) testing with a tiny bit of automation.
I'd really like to shift careers back into programming. Specifically the Android platform has caught my attention. These are the books I've been reading and working through.
Learning Java, Third Edition - O'Reilly
Beginning Android 2 - Mark Murphy
Hello, Android - Ed Burnette
However, I think I need something that looks at programming from a less language dependent standpoint. Something that takes a bird's eye view if that makes sense.
It's very easy to see how particular functions work, but I'm looking to get a better sense of how all the pieces fit together. How does one split up an app into individual classes and packages? Do I have a method in main that shuffles my deck of cards (object) or does the class deck of cards have a method I can call to shuffle itself?
I think I'm looking for a book on object oriented design? I've also been working through the tutorials and examples at http://developer.android.com/resources/index.html and also in the three books I've been reading so far. Maybe I just need to spend more time coding though?
