Android :: Beginners Cant Get HelloWorld

Sep 21, 2010

When I run the sample from http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/hello-world.html, I am not getting to see the "hello Android" in the AVD/Emulator. I have a target compile set to 2.2 (API level 8) and thats also what the AVD is targettted to run.

Android :: Cant Get HelloWorld Loaded On AVD

Sep 20, 2010

Helloworld tutorial sample builds and runs just fine, except it doesn't show the text (i.e. loads apps). The only thing I see is that Emulator (Target 2.2 API level 8) comes up with just the "Android" in it. and then the emulator shows up a locked up screen in a while. Android :: Java For Beginners Books?

Sep 22, 2010

I've been looking into Android development, and while I understand the concepts, all of the Java stuff goes right over my head. XML is easy to pick up on, but I quickly found out that advanced Android development is simply not possible without a good understanding of Java. I looked at this book and it seems pretty good: http://www.amazon.com/Java-Tutorial-Short-Course-Basics/dp/0321334205. Is this good material for a true beginner, or will it be a little too advanced? I need something that will start out very slowly and explain the concepts, ideas and functions clearly. The last thing I want is a book that's incredibly complex and hard on a beginner. I have absolutely NO knowledge of Java or any coding, so I need to start with the basics. Is Android Java a lot different than regular Java? I know there are some differences, but if I studied regular Java could I quickly relate that to Android? I wouldn't want to read a Java book then get back into Android and be lost due to the changes. With this in mind please recommend me some books. I'm very enthusiastic about Android and have brilliant ideas for applications. I just need the prerequisites for Android before I can go full force.

Android :: Eclipse Can't Connect Activity Manager - HelloWorld Not Appear

Jun 24, 2010

This appears related to:http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3037512/android-application-doesnt-start-from-eclipse/3106897#3106897 Even with the Android 2.2 platform is this still the accepted way to operate the emulator? i.e. 1, 2, 3 start/kill processes as described in the above post? I am having a similar problem on WinXP with Eclipse w/ ADT plugin. Why would the activity not be able to start on the emulator? The computer has 756MB RAM if that could be the problem. The deployment is going along until Eclipse tries to deploy the activity. The emulator starts with the text "ANDROID_" and then eventually just displays the ANDROID logo, though appears to still be running just fine. Any ideas? Thanks. The code was copied from the HelloWorld tutorial. Here is the Eclipse console log including the error messages towards the end:

Sprint HTC Hero :: Rooting For Beginners - Pros And Cons

Feb 1, 2010

I know their are plenty of topics about how to root, what it does, and roms and everything. But I and others are a still a bit concerned I am sure. If you don't plan on helping or contributing to this then don't say their are plenty of topics on the site and other websites. I have read the forum on xda developers on how to root the CDMA Hero, but I am still a bit confused. If you root what are some benefits, I have heard sometimes the device runs alot faster and snappier, and I have heard it is slow and sluggish. Also what are some other things that can be tweaked/customized, I would want to do this to screen capture, change to a white taskbar, and maybe try and add a rom. What is the best method to changing Roms, what program do I need? Also is it possible that if I were to change roms to go back to the stock rom and stock settings without bricking or screwing up my phone. If anyone can give me the best method, and a 2.0 or 2.1 rom for the hero, I don't care if HTC sense is on their or not. I like 2.1 without it. Anyone who can give details on why I should, shouldn't would be greatly appreciated and I am sure many people would too. Anything that gives or lists benefits and things you can do if you root would be great. Also a link to the best forum or youtube video that gives detailed responses on step by step instructions on how to root for the Sprint CDMA Hero.

Android :: Android WebView Not Loading A JavaScript File But Android Browser Loads It Fine

Jun 3, 2010

I'm writing an application which connects to a back office site. The backoffice site contains a whole slew of JavaScript functions, at least 100 times the average site. Unfortunately it does not load them, and causes much of the functionality to not work properly. So I am running a test. I put a page out on my server which loads the FireBugLite javascript text. Its a lot of javascript and perfect to test and see if the Android WebView will load it. The WebView loads nothing, but the browser loads the Firebug Icon. What on earth would make the difference, why can it run in the browser and not in my WebView? Any suggestions.
More background information, in order to get the stinking backoffice application available on a Droid (or any other platform except windows) I needed to trick the bakcoffice application to believe what's accessing the website is Internet Explorer. Android :: Moto Android Stuck On Android Splash Screen

Feb 5, 2010

I am having a bit of a problem with my Android. So what happened was I downloaded "DroidRootPro" from the market. I rooted my phone with this, installed the 800MHZ ROM image, rebooted and the phone came up great. I was actually surprised on how fast it became. Once the phone came back up, I tried installing one of the custom themes that came with that app (I know I should have left it alone). The phone than rebooted and I was never able to bring it back up. It gets stuck in this endless loop where it tries to boot but doesnt get past the "Droid" splash screen, it just keeps rebooting every time.

Things I have tried:

-Wipe data/factory reset (in recovery mode), no go.
-Wipe cach partition, no go
-Restore from a "nandroid" backup, no go. I tried pretty much every combination of restores and am unable to bring the phone up.

Is there anyway I can download the factory image that comes with the phone, put it on an SD card and restore to that? I have looked all over but cant find any information on this.

Android :: How To Reference R.java Of Other Apps In Android - Like Com.android.music

Sep 29, 2010

I am trying to develop an app to supplement the built-in music player. I've used git to download the com.android.music package and looked around at its code. I can launch the music player by copying some of its code and launching activities with intents.

Now what I need to do is get a handle to its current view. In the MusicUtils.java file, I see a line that says

View nowPlayingView = a.findViewById(R.id.nowplaying);

I'd like to do the same thing. Only I don't have access to the R.java file, so I can't write e.g. R.id.nowplaying. How do I do this? How do I reference the music players R.java? I do know the R.java stuff is declared public so that shouldn't be a problem. Right?

Is it even possible? I saw this related question and am now wondering: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2437271/how-to-load-com-android-music-code-into-eclipse-and-compile

I'm working against the Android 2.2 SDK, but it'd be helpful to know if the answer is different for older versions such as 1.5.
