My point is to be able to call a 2.1 API if it exists, while the application should be able to run in 1.5
Specifically, I am making a GPS application which would like to call android.location.LocationManager.addNmeaListener if available. My problem is that this call takes as parameter an abstract class (GpsStatus.NmeaListener) which I cannot pass directly to Class.GetMethod (or my application won't work in 1.5). I'm writing an android app that requires binding a JSON object into a domain entity with the keys from the JSON as instance variables. Since there are several domain entities, each with different instance variables that the JSON needs to bind to in the app, i'd like to write a method such as ths following: Loop through all the instance variables from the domain if a key exists in the JSON with the name of the instance variable, take the value for this key from the JSON and set the Domain's instance variable with this key name equal to this value. The reason i'm interested in the doing the binding from the class to the JSON is because if the JSON changes for some reason, I don't want it to break the app when the instance variable doesn't exist in the app's domain for a specific JSON key. I do an import of the full package name / java file, and if I do a <classname>.<method>, SOMETIMES I can get it to access - other times I get a lot of can't use a static in a non static bunch of talk. I'll admit I'm new to Java, so what do I need to do? Call a class instance first, then call my methods? I'm rather confused by this, as I want to put all of my 'functions' into a FunctionsList.java file, and all of my main Activity (UI) into a MyActivity.java file.
For example:
<MyActivity.java>
import com.example.FunctionsList;
private class MyActivity extends Activity {
FunctionsList.function();
}
9/10 times I get that static/non-static error. If I put all of my functions into MyActivity.java, I have zero problems!

Does dalvik have any limitation it puts on classfiles, mainly size related? In groovy we have a huge class thats need to be able to be reflected upon, but it silently fails. IE theres no error during build(dex) or load time but calls to the reflective methods throws a no such method exception. This file is above 13000 lines of code and contains a vast number of methods so size limitations seems probable, or are there any other ways reflection can fail for a normal java class? Oh, and cutting the file down in size made it work but is not optimal since it contains all of groovy's utility methods.

in my xml interface there is a text box in which the user will input a number (for example: 10). the id of this text box is "input1"
how do I call the value of input1 in Java and then perform a calculation on it?
For example...
suppose input1 = x

I've been going over the android sdk for the past year to find out if there is a way to change the network type(2g/3g/4g), in phones with root access.However I couldn't find any way to do this.Asking around,someone told me that I could do this using reflection,by calling a method on a phone instance.Looking through the source code,I did find a setPrefferedNetworkType(); method in the Phone Interface,inside the internal telephony package.Is there anyway I can use this to solve my problem.I can't seem to find a way to get an instance of a class that implements the interface.Or is there any other way to do it entirely?

Hi, custom classes which are part of a framework, so nothing graphical. One of those (singleton) classes is a Logging class which send logs to my server. I noticed that even though I can call the classes methods in my service it actually won't be logging anything... In my specific example it's osmething like : Logger.getInstance().log("Whatever I want to Log"); Obviously the getInstance is a static method so it can be accessed from anywhere within my project right away.. I was wondering though why this method for example isn't getting called ? Also how do I debug a Service ? Btw I am using of IPC from one of my Activities which gets bound to the service and can start/stop the music for example...

I am new at android development and java programming, but I have decided to program a drinking game app in android. This app basically simulates a deck a cards, a player clicks a button to draw a card then based on the card thats drawn the player plays a drinking game (ie takes 1 drink, takes 2 drinks ect).
I have the main program in one java file, and the code that shuffles the card deck and puts the card sequence in an array in other java file. My problem is that whenever a class from the other java file (classicMode.java) is called from the main program (fubar.java), my android program crashes and gives the error : "The application Drinking Game - FUBAR (process com.games.dg) has stopped unexpectedly. What I want to do, is be able to access the object neoApi inside the Neoseeker class, from its inner class RunningTimer. I release a class. In the class, there are public fields that can be written. I want to register the callback function which will be called right after my field is accessed. I think I can do that by using JVM tool interface which is supposed to be used for a debugger software. JVM tool interface:

In an Android app, I am looking for the functionality of the .NET string function [Trim('aaa')] which will trim off the text "aaa" off a string. I don't think this is natively available in Java and I haven't seen that functionality in Android Java textutil library.
