Android : Is CDATA Supposed To Be URL-encoded

Oct 17, 2010

Obviously the answer is no... right? The reason I ask is because I have this string defined in XML for an Android app:

<string name="foo">

This%20is%20a%20test

</string>

All I do to the string is read it, and display in an HTML view. I would not have expected the %20s to be interpreted, yet they are. Is this the correct behaviour, or is Android being typically buggy?

Android :: Streaming Encoded Video Via RTP

Jul 31, 2009

For a research project we need to capture video on the HTC magic and transmit this video over a network to other devices, both HTC magic's and desktop pc's (which have their own implementations of the codecs). For the transmission over the network we are using some of our own native libraries, which have all compiled fine and work. These libraries work via the RTP (Real time transfer) protocol. This poses a significant problem because RTP expects detailed information about the contents of each packet (exact timestamp, sampling rate, which part of which frame is in each packet etc.) So we tried the method described at /blog/kisg/20090708/broadcasting-video-with-an This appears the only way to get the MediaRecorder to send it's data to our native application. So we run a server-socket on the native side, send MediaRecorder output to a FileDescriptor of a javasocket. The native side does receive data. 2 problems however :

1. Like said in the blogpost : header information etc. is not filled in, so if we write the data to file from the native-side, it's not playable.

2. The socket we write to is TCP, so a stream implementation. So there is no clear way to know where each frame begins and ends (because the data comes in continuously). And that's the main problem : we can't package the data in good RTP packets for transmission! Nor can we get good information about the timing etc. So we looked into OpenCore a little bit, hoping to be able to do it through JNI-interfaces ourselves (or maybe even directly with the native implementations from our native code). This has proven a daunting task, because so little documentation can be found on these things. So the question is : Is it possible to get the encoded video (and audio) data with clear frame-separation and good timing-information for RTP transmission? (It is not an option to use anything but RTP, as the research is partly about RTP possibilities)

Android :: Decoding Encoded Audio Data On Android Without Playing It

Feb 25, 2010

Short version: What is the best way to get data encoded in an MP3 (and ideally in an AAC/Ogg/WMA) into a Java array or ByteBuffer that I can then manipulate?I'm putting together a program that has slowing down and speeding up sound files as one of its features. This works fine for WAV files, which are a header plus the exact binary data that needs to be sent to the speaker, and now I need to implement it for MP3 (ideally, this would also support AAC, Ogg, and WMA, but since those are less popular formats this is not required). Android does not expose an interface to decode the MP3 without playing it, so I need to create that

Media :: Save Encoded Video Steam From Encoder And Add Custom Composer Engine?

Dec 5, 2009

First, I want to save the encoded video stream from the encoder,And then, the encoder recieves the uncompressed video stream from camera. How can my application recieve the compressed stream from the encoder?

Second, I'd like to add the custom composer engine to media framework(opencore), And then I'll use the already-launched device, HTC Hero and Motrola Droid, etc. The custom composer engine will recieve the video stream from the encoder. And, save the stream using the custom file format. Is it possible add the custome engine using the already-lauched device? If it is posselbe, where can I find the references?

Android : TextView Supposed To Be Able To Scroll Its Contents?

Nov 10, 2009

It was my understanding that even though TextView is not a ScrollView, it has scrolling functionality built-in.

However, I'm not able to scroll the contents of a TextView (that's on 1.6). I've reduced my code to the most trivial example:

<LinearLayout xmlns:android=" android" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:orientation="vertical"> Code...

I then defined a really long string for testing, which I set on this text view using setText(). The text is too long for the TextView, but there is no way to scroll it. So do I need to wrap it in a ScrollView after all?

Android : Weren't There Supposed To Be 1000's Of Apps?

Nov 19, 2009

I have to say that when the Android Market tells me I can browse the "top" apps but need to use the on-phone App-finder to see it all, I am immediately Paranoid. This is precisely the Hipster-Nerd-Elite stuff that makes me go all queasy when I think of the low-hanging I-Fruit that is everything open-source is NOT. It makes a person ask, what are you hiding?

Having said this, I still expected that there would already be several large Softpedia-type sites with a google or two of applications waiting for the Android user. You know--everything that open-source is. So now I find myself looking for an alternative audio-player to find that only TuneWiki comes up more than once or twice (and with each new introduction I like the option less).

So am I looking in all the wrong places, or should I have stuck with WM if I wanted 35 choices for every type of app? Right now, I'm feeling a bit scared at least until my contract is up again.

Android :: Get All Text - Including Encoded - From XML Text Node

Jul 2, 2010

I have a very basic question regarding encoded text in an XML Text node.

I am using the DOM parser javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilder to parse some xml. The xml has some international characters which are encoded in decimal unicode - eg. 'ó' is 'ó'.

The parser takes the encoded character out of the word for example jóbb and the Text node is left with jbb as the node value. If I use getData() on the Text node it returns jbb also. The character is not lost though - a sibling Node, an Entity Reference Node, has the decimal value and an index. The index value corresponds to where this character should be inserted. In this case for example if would have an index of 1 and value of '#234'.

This indicates that there must be a simple way of accessing the value of the Text node of its parent in such a way as to get 'jóbb'. It seems unlikely that I need to reconstruct this by doing a lookup to convert the encoded character to utf8 and then insert it into the string for the Text node. Does anyone know how this works?

Android : Aren't Focus States Supposed To Bubble To Child Views?

Apr 19, 2010

When using a View within a View, for example an ImageView within a LinearLayout, both of which have xml drawable resources (the LinearLayout as a background) specifying PNG drawables to use for the on/off states, shouldn't children Views receive the focus state when their parent gets focus? So as far as I understand, both my LinearLayout and ImageView should be switching to their focus states right? Apparently not Or, more likely, apparently my implementation is incorrect.

The focus state works on the LinearLayout but my ImageView never receives focus.. I have both Views set to android:focusable="true".

Sprint HTC : Hero Supposed To Be A Multitasking Device?

Nov 11, 2009

Just wanted to make sure that the Hero is supposed to be a multitasking device? Because every time I try to multitasking, my phone freaks out.

For example, as I was typing this (i am typing this post on my Hero), my green LED started flashing because I got an email. So I pressed home so I could check my email (no notification drag down in browser) and phone started to just get jittery, get stuck, and just freak out and lag. All the meanwhile, the music I was listening to started to skip and stutter like crazy. That was just a simple multitasking task that went haywire (sp?) and it isn't the only time that its happened.

Like I would be browsing the Market and get a text (which lagged in that the notification ring sounds a couple of seconds after the phone vibrates) and I press home to check my sms (via chompsms because of the sms bug) and once again, my phone freaks out (not as badly as how I mentioned before, but still annoying.

Overall, I just don't think the Hero is doing a very good job at multitasking (my Hero at least). But i thought the Hero was supppsed to be a multitasking phone, no? What's the dealio?

PS: This took me FOREVER to type on the Hero because of its crazy keyboard lag when using it in the browser (even with haptic feedback off)

HTC 4G : Referb EVO Worse Then What I Am Supposed To Send Back

Aug 31, 2010

So I got my replacement evo today that I was told would be new... its not, I am not very happy about that. but besides that the referb unit is in worse shape then my release day evo. The screen is up level with the bezel and higher in some spots ,the menu soft key only lights up half way and the vibrating is about half as strong as mine. they are both hardware 3. I have not activated it and have been talking to sprint for 2 hours, waiting on a supervise to call me now. I told them if they are not going to send me a new unit at least let me send back the refurb and have somebody physically test my new refurb before send it out to me to make sure it does not have issues. They say I have to send back mine and then after they get it they can send me out a new one...ERRRR I do not want to use this refurb unit untill I can get another. I am very frustrated with sprint at this point!!!

I am now calling HTC to see what they can do for me under the warenty... Ok He gave me a number for there warranty department but they closed 50 min ago so have to wait for there morning.

It has been half an hour no word from the sprint supervise. I am done ranting now hopefully this makes sense I wrote it really fast and angry. Hope everyone else is having a great Tuesday and if you got an EPIC congrats. Let me know how it is.

HTC EVO 4G :: Suspend Process - Running CPU At 50%-60% While Phone's Supposed To Be Asleep

Aug 28, 2010

I noticed a weird battery drain on my EVO over the last week or so. I've got the System Panel app, and it appears there's an internal process called "suspend" that is running the CPU at 50%-60% while the phone's supposed to be asleep.

I have the un-updated facebook app, and it doesn't have any login information anyway. The problem started occurring around the time I installed Pandora; have there been any reports of problems with that app? Alternatively, does anybody know what might be causing that process to chew CPU cycles?
