Android :: Apps Labeled As Tetris Clones Removed From Market
Apr 7, 2009I received a message from google saying that my game "Robotic Space Rock" was pulled from the android market after a request made by a legal firm representing an entity known as Tetris Company. My application was removed from the android market together with Blocks, Cubik, Net Tetris, Netblocks and Tetroid (6 apps in total) under claim that it violates the DMCA and more specifically trademarks and copyrighted material owned by the Tetris Company. However, none of the trademarks or copyrighted material (music, graphics and sound effects) are present in my game. Sound effects and music were created by me specifically for the game. There is no reference to the word tetris in the game. Additionally, all the game code, graphics and sound effects were created by me and published on the code site http://code.google.com/p/monolithandroid
Additionally, I am not aware of a software patent covering the game mechanics of Tetris, so I cannot see how I could violate something that is not protected by a software patent. Also, even if the game was protected by a patent, the patent would have expired, since the original game, Tetris, was created 23 years ago. However game mechanics cannot be covered by patents.
I would also like to point out that my game is available completely free of charge to every user of the android market.
I wrote those concerns to Google and I sent an email to the EFF. The bottom line is that for my application to be restored on the android market, I have to send a DMCA counter-notification. And then the Tetris Company can sue and take the case to Court.
When games were pulled from the iPhone App store, they blamed apple, but it is not hard to see that behind application removals we can find companies like the Tetris Company, that demand application removals claiming copyright infringement and trademarks. However, it is not easy to battle these companies as individual developers. I, for example, am a Greek citizen living in Greece, so it is difficult for me to file a counter-notification, because then the Tetris company will probably sue me and I will have to defend my case in court. Why should I bother? Am I making money out of the game? No! But even if I did you can see how easy it is for corporations to neutralize developers like that. I think that something should be done. Android :: Market Be Locked Down / Blocked / Removed?
Nov 12, 2010My company is looking at upgrading from WinMo Intrepids to possibly Android phones.We are with Sprint so only those phones are being looked at.Couple of questions from an enterprise mind.Android 2.2 updated exchange policy support so some of our concerns are being met.My biggest questions are relating to Sprint ID and the Android Market.One does anyone know if you can totally locked down Sprint ID? As in not allow other ones from being downloaded and installed. Basically to give us a way to lock the phone down with what apps we want.Next big thing is can the Android Market be locked down/Blocked/Removed?Remember these are going to be company phones mainly being used for exchange email, not personal phones to play around with eating up data.Generally just looking at ways to keep the phones secure from all the nasties out there. We are looking at the Optimus S which is why I bring up Sprint ID.For my side of it, I would generally be against this. I own an Evo and love tinkering plus I will be the one developing in house apps for us to use.

Aug 24, 2013I have a problem with my android phone. During the holidays I added my mothers and girlfriends gmail-account to my android phone (android 4.0) so they could check their email at wifi points. Afterwards (about a week ago now) I removed their accounts again. So, there is no trace from their accounts left on my phone. However, I just noticed that when they go to the play store on a pc, they can still install apps! Even though they are not logged in to my phone! I tried it, and indeed, my phone started downloading the app.
Googling how to stop this did not turn up anything useful, How do I disable their ability to install apps? I even added the accounts again to the phone, made sure all syncing was off, removed them (with all syncing off), and it still worked!
General :: Disconnecting Apps From Android Market - Deleting Market Link?
Apr 7, 2011I have an app that was installed via Android Market. And so, the Android Market knows when new versions are out and notifies me of an update. Titanium Backup calls this the 'Market Link', not sure what else it could be called.
how would I go about 'disconnecting' the app from the Market? Deleting the market link as if it were side-loaded?
Yes, I know this means no more updates for the app etc. Which is actually what I'm after.

Oct 6, 2010I know my question answers but since there's a lot of you who really spend your time scrutinizing your rank, downloads and all, I'm trying it maybe someone came up with empiric science on this one :
Does anyone understood even bits of how the market ranks apps in the market ?
I usually don't look at stats but following another post on this topic, I counted my rank in my category ... 565 ... Ouch that hurts! Especially when half the apps in front of mine, are crap apps with less downloads and ratings as low as 1 star :).
Not that it would make a difference being rank 250 instead of 565...But this is humiliating a little :s
Since my app has been on the market for one month, i'm wondering if age matters ...
I know I should have asked in the market "black hole of hell " google group but the name says it all. And I'm sure some of you already figured out some of the black magic used by the Market to rank apps.

Aug 23, 2010I would like to write an app on Android to upload my GPS location to an external website once every 5 minutes. This needs to have as minimal an impact on battery life as possible, but it also needs to work without any user interaction. (Background: I'm competing in an Ironman triathlon which will take me about 14 hours to complete, and want to broadcast my location in near-real-time but without having to worry about fiddling with my phone.) So my initial thought is to write a Service which uses LocationManager.requestLocationUpdates() with a minTime of 5 minutes, but will this actually wake the device up every 5 minutes for my service to do its job?
It sounds like I would also need to use AlarmManager.setInexactRepeating() to make sure my service is awake while it completes its task but how does that play with requestLocationUpdates()? Should I instead set minTime=0 on requestLocationUpdates() but then go back to sleep as soon as the next update is obtained? Any general guidance on how to design this. I'm a competent Java programmer & will be using Google Maps on the server to plot my location, but am pretty new to Android development so I'm basically looking for a high-level plan on how to architect the client app.

Jun 26, 2010I'm trying to obtain an instance of ServiceState in my Activity. But how am i supposed to do this? There is no static method to obtain an instance or any method on any service that returns an ServiceState instance.
There is the TelephonyManager.listen() call. But i want to get the ServiceState instance when i want, not when android calls my listener because something changed.

I'm running the following query, it should pick them both out, populate my domain object, and add to a list. The output at the bottom should therefore be 2, but it is 5, why is this? (cursor.getCount() is 5 instead of 2)
I have stepped through each iteration of the while loop and it is retreving the same contact multiple times, but with different values for POSTCODE, such as the phone number

Android :: How To Obtain Subviews From Listview
Oct 1, 2010My program will show data based on selection from two spinners (month and year). Based on month and year, it will query DB and displays the content in listview.
I created two spinners and populate with array string. Then I created two spinner views, two arrayadapters and set onItemSelected listeners and set adapter to the views. Then I use cursor to get query from DB, then put the result into simple cursor adapter and put them into list adapter. Finally I use list view to add this listadapter. Result shows properly. It is OK when the queries is not too much. But when there are lots of queries, it is difficult to see. So I want to implement paging for my program. For example: I get 100 queries, and I want to show them like 10 or 20 queries per page. I can control how many records per page via another spinner.
But the main problem is that I don't know how to get subset data or subview from return queries (listview).
Are there any methods in listadapter or android can do that ? I'm still new in android. I also read some documents about getView(), I don't understand and not sure whether it can help on my purpose.

Aug 22, 2009Just wondering if it is possible to get icons for applications on the Android Market? For example, if there is an application called "com.mycompany.someapp", is there a way to programmatically grab an image (icon) for that application either through an Android API or by simply downloading it from someplace on the net? I know it is possible to get the icon for an installed app using the PackageManager API; however, I don't believe that works for apps that are not installed. Failing that, since PackageManager can get a list of icons for installed applications, it should be possible to compile a fairly comprehensive list by creating an app that queries the PackageManger and uploads all the installed app icons to a webserver. That's not as nice as a true API, but it seems like it would work reasonably well. Can anyone think of anything particularly wrong with that approach?
