Android :: How To Decide Between Galaxy-s Vs N900?
Sep 19, 2010
I am planning to buy a High End phone. Though my Basic requirement is mostly Emailing, IM and Web Browsing. My prime concern is whenever I visit a website the viewing has to be clear and comfortably big. So I am looking out for a phone with a decent screen. Now I have shortlisted two phones the Nokia N900 and the Samsung Galaxy S-i9000. I know that the SGS comes with an Amoled Screen, which supports 16 Million colors but frankly speaking a lot of people have been saying this to me besides the big, vibrant screen the SGS offers there is nothing special about it. Still running Android 2.1. Ok Offers Multi-touch screen, Pinch to Zoom ease and all. But frankly it cannot be the only deciding factor atleast not for me. Android Apps have reached to a staggering number but while everyone is happy about the numbers a lot remains to be desired on how much of those Apps are really useful. Though Multi-Tasking is also there on the SGS, the quality and the experience is Horrible is what I have heard from initial feedback, it keeps killing most of the apps in the background when you run a website on it.

We are designing an internal system that will have a .NET PC base station and many Android mobiles, communicating over WiFi. Can't decide between SOAP or XML-RPC protocol. Primary concerns are maturity, compatibility, and the minimizing of coding/integration, in that order. Which is best?

I have a Nokia N900 - it's great and so powerful but I must admit I like something that is smooth and easy to use yet still hackable so I think I want to go back to an Android device.I know a few threads ask for advice etc and this one is no different!I want the best of both worlds but would prefer a hardware keyboard, when I say best of both worlds,I want a fast processor and at least as important a device with loads of ram and of course version 2.something of Android.I know my only option currently is the Nexus One (but no hardware keyboard) so I was wondering if there is anything up and coming (or if I should compromise my requirements list)

Does anyone knows how to load Android on Nokia N900 ? I read in few places that some functions might not work .. Nokia doesn't seem to know where they are heading with Maemo/Meego/Symbian since Meego will not be ported to N900.. and only 1/3 of Ovi apps work on it .. would be great to have a build for the N900 - I'll switch right away.

in HTC Sense, we can choose widgets of different size after tapping a single entry in the widget list. Is this also possible in pure Android Framework? I have tried to modify the widget's size in the configure Activity, but failed.

I have a standard HTC Eris travel AC charge that I bought. Worked awesome. Charged Phone nice and fast. When I would plug it in. The battery widget would show a little plug.
Now when I attempt to plug the phone in. It thinks its charging by usb. Taking the phone off charge and replugging it in. It tells me its now charging by ac. If i touch the phone a tiny bit it will stop charging. Touch the wire and it begins to charge again. Only as usb. When its clearly plugged into the ac charger.
If i plug the phone into my car charger it say ac. I just dont get it.
Now when i left work. I attempted to tether the phone via pdanet. Now the phone wolnt go into usb debugging. Phone charges but computer wolnt recognize it.
Ive tried the usual. Power cycling both computer and phone. Tried restarting both computer and phone. As well as changed cords and chargers. All do the same thing. I fear maybe some of the contacts are bad on the phone.

As per this post, An idea for great battery life
Could someone with good battery life on a Galaxy S post their batterstats.bin file?
I'd like to try this fix and not sure if the batterystats file would work from the other thread since its a different phone.

From the Greek guy that recently compared Super Amoled vs Amoled vs Lcd....
He says that the 5mpx camera is excellent in day but in dark places without the flash it is not very good....the 720p is nice but he is not impressed.

I've just got my new Samsung Galaxy S I9000 phone which looks awesome. I had been using a Nokia N97 Mini which had behaved OK and I've been using Joikuspot as a WIFI tether which is important because of my need for the internet during the day. I was really please to find that the Galaxy has an inbuilt tether application in the Mobile AP however I cannot get it to work and wondered if any one else had any issues? The Mobile AP kicks in ok and I can find it on my laptop however when I try to connect it just tells me that it cannot connect and goes into trying to diagnose the problem. I tried to bypass this by inputting the wireless connection manually but when I do it tells me the security option is wrong but does this for every option in the list.

I have added my work exchange email account to my Samsung Galaxy S. It starts to downloads email, contacts and calender entries but then starts to freeze or pop-up screens appears saying that there is no contact with TwLauncher - it doesn't matter if I choose "wait" or "force close". Even if I delete the exchange account the phone keeps freezing and I have to do a phone reset (with all the setting up and downloading of apps to follow). I have tried to set up the account on a clean phone with NO other apps installed same problem. What do I do? Our server is Exchange 2003. It works fine with my colleagues Nokia and HTC phones.

May I know how to delete or replace the 4 default icons (Dialer, Contacts, Messaging, and Applications) on the Galaxy S main screen? The reason for me doing this is because I wanted to use the Handcent SMS app instead of the default Android SMS app as I am getting used to the Handcent one.

I'm considering getting me one of the sexy Galaxies, but have been wondering if it is possible to play videos (of any type and quality) with soft subtitle, such as .srt, .txt, .sub, or any other subtitle that is not hard-coded on the video. Or can closed captioned m4v or mkv videos be played with soft subtitle on Galaxy? That would be great if anyone knows how to do so or those already doing so can share us the how-to.

Apparently the new iPhone will stay connected to wifi even while the screen is locked. This is nice because with my current iPhone,I use about 3-4 megs of data a day even if I never leave my house (which has wifi). It would be nice if the Captivate didn't do that since I have the 200-meg plan with AT&T and I'd like to use my data for web surfing, not checking for email in the background. Would anyone mind checking this for me?

I have configured my Samsung Galaxy S using my normal Gmail account. This has helped me to sync the Google Contacts with my phone.
Following are my questions:
1. Right now I have about a thousand google contacts synced to my phone. I want to remove them at one go. I know how to disable them from being appearing in contact list, but I want to know if I can delete them without going to factory settings.
2. I am using three applications (a) Gmail (b) Contacts (3) MVOIP. I want to know if there is a way that following combination works:
a- Google contacts appear on Gmail app
b- Google contacts (with phone numbers) and normal phone contacts appear on "Contacts"
c- Google contacts (with phone numbers) and normal phone contacts appear on "MVOIP application".
I know how to do
(a) - By synchronising google contacts,
(b) - by choosing display options
(c) - I do not know how to handle this and I want help.

Though Galaxy S has got the gorgeous Super AMOLED display and good GPU which is capable of 50FPS, I dont see a whole lot of games developed by Premium Game makers (like EA, Game loft). Also, any game playable with Android 2.1 is compatible with Galaxy S or do we need games specifically developed for Galaxy S?
