Android :: Create A Single Class Which Can Be Parent For Every Type Of Activity?

Oct 7, 2010

I wish to have a single class which all of my Activity classes extend. I have ListActivities, Activities, MapActivities, TabActivities, etc in my App.

I have many of these different activities in my app, ~12 activities. I want each of them to have the methods which are in the parent class.

Right now, i have created 4 parent activity classes which are extended from a certain activity depending on their type(ListActivity, Activity, MapActivity, TabActivity)

I am creating a lot of redundant code - each of the 4 parent activities has almost identical code, in exception for what class activity it extends.

Here is an example that may clarify what my problem is:

I have an Activity: MenuScreen which extends BaseListActivity BaseListActivity extends ListActivity BaseListActivity contains methods and fields which i want all my activities to have access to I have another Activity: HomeScreen which extends BaseActivity BaseActivity extends Activity BaseActivity contains the same methods and fields which are in my other Base[<type>]Activity classes(such as BaseListActivity)

These methods/fields are copy-pasted to all my Base[<type>]Activity, and seems awfully redundant to me.

Can i create a master activity class which all types of Activity classes can use as its parent? if not, am i stuck with copy and pasting this code and feeling gross/dirty about it?

Android :: How To Use Androids To Create Custom View Class?

Aug 15, 2010

I am using a custom class based off RelativeLayout but it obviously doesn't render in the Eclipse layout editor. I have found this article regarding LayoutInflater.Factory and it sounds like what I need to be doing but I can find no guides to using LayoutInflater.Factory.
http://www.macadamian.com/blog/post/android_-_custom_classes_from_xml_layout/

Could anyone help with exactly what and where I do this? I understand what is said in the article, but need specifics on where to declare, hook, whatever the Factory. In case it is helpful, here is the complete console output from when I try to view main.xml in Layout view..

Android :: Create Custom Global Methods In My Application Class?

Aug 17, 2010

I currently have an app that has many activities and needs to have a way of maintaining state between these activities.

I use the Application class to do this, declaring my global variables and using getters and setters to interact with my activities.

I was hoping to place a few custom methods in there, so that when I want to do a common task like, for instance, display an error message, I can declare the method in my application class and call it from any activity that uses it

EscarApplication application = (EscarApplication) this.getApplication();

EscarApplication being the name of my application class above.

I have tried to include this method in my application class:

CODE:.....

In the hope that I can call this method from activity without having to redeclare it, but when I call it using something like below I get an null pointer exception:

Visit.this.application.showError("Update error", "An error has occurred while trying to communicate with the server");

Visit being the name of my current activity above.

Should this work, or can I only use getters and setters to change global vars in an Application Class.

EDIT Stack Trace:

CODE:...............

The dialog is declared as such in the application class:AlertDialog alertDialog;

Created in that same class:alertDialog = new AlertDialog.Builder(this).create();

And the method to call it in that class is as follows:

CODE:.............

And finally, it is called from an activity like so:

CODE:........................

Android :: OpenGL More Textures For One Rect

Nov 1, 2010

In Android OpenGL ES, I want to be able to switch textures for a given Rectangle. I have one rect and I put two textures, depending on different conditions. I just want to switch between textures.

I followed this code to create the textures: http://blog.poweredbytoast.com/loading-opengl-textures-in-android but it seems that this is only for one texture.

If I use only one texture, it renders fine, but then I don't know how to tell the rect to use another texture (same rect, different texture). Do I do something like "setTexture" with the ID that is generated in loadTextures()? Do I have to have an array with texture names (numbers) that I then change .. I just don't get it..

Android :: How Does ImageView Just Redraw Part Of Its Content When Invalidate(Rect) Is Called?

Nov 8, 2009

I am new to Android development, just reading docs and trying the APIs. I am quit confused how ImageView managed to draw just a part of its content after an invalidate(Rect) invocation.

I've checked ImageView.java, found no other drawing method except onDraw(Canvas), but onDraw(Canvas) only cut the drawable only if it is beyound the view's visible boundary. I also read the implementation of View.invalidate(Rect), I think the key of this function is calling to mParent.invalidateChild(this, r);

However, I think the parent view doesn't know how to draw the child in the given Rect, it finally has to call some method of it child to paint out. Has anybody investigated this part of codes? Would you please give me some guide?
