So, unfortunately i have no exp whatsoever with writing software. Just html, xhtml, php, sql basically just web experience. I'm looking for a guide on writing a simple app using eclipse, i just installed the android SDK to it. Something simple I'd like to learn to do is just build an app that encases a web page similar to the bank of America app or the Fbook app. Can someone point me at a guide?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI want to be able to have two projects, one that contains production code and one that contains test code. This shouldn't necessarily be an Android-specific question, but I'm want to write some unit tests for some non-platform-specific Android code on the host PC.
I created a new Java project so I can run the unit tests on the PC and only include the non-platform-specific classes from the Android project. Both projects are opened in the same Eclipse workspace. I assume I need to somehow include these Android-project sources explicitly in the new project where I'll run the Junit tests, but I can't figure out how to do this.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been using the Android documentation for a few days now, and it is quite good and easy to read. Apart from that I noticed that I missed something, and now I found out what it is: Examples and comments.
If you look at the PHP documentation (e.g. http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.substr.php for the PHP substr() function) you will see many syntax-highlighted examples and comments by users.
Of course there are examples in the Android documentation, especially in the Dev Guide category - they just are not at the right place if one searches the reference for a specific method or functionality. What do you think about this?
I just finished what I hope is the ultimate guide to emulation on Android. I've basically fine-combed the Market and done my best to map out what the Android platform currently has to offer when it comes to retro video game console and home computer emulation. Various Nintendo consoles are covered, of course, as well as Sega, C64, Amiga, ZX Spectrum, TurboGrafx-16 et cetera.
The only emulators I've ignored are those with an average rating below 3. Now to my question: did I miss any good emulators? There might be emulator projects for Android on the web that are not available on the Market? Such as ScummVM, for example, although technically it might not qualify as an emulator. Is there a PlayStation emulator for Android?

I have a weird problem with the hitchhikers guide soundboard app on the market. I have a non rooted HTC Magic (running 1.6 donut) and live in New Zealand. I was able to install an early version of it (1.2) I think. So the app would appear in the "My Downloads" section.In the description of the app, I could then see the app was getting upgraded frequently. But I never got any notification to upgrade. When I then searched for the app, it no longer appeared for me in the market.Its like somehow its been geo restricted, or perhaps no longer compatible with my phone, so it had disappeared for me to download/upgrade. I can even goto the authors website & try installing the app independent of the market, but even then a dialog box pops up saying "Cannot install on this phone".I can see other people are downloading and using it, but am wondering if other people are having any issues finding & installing the app? I checked to see what has been using all my memory and was surprised to see the TV Guide app running. I closed it and my phone ran great again. Checked the battery usage to see it used almost 5% of my battery. The one problem? I NEVER EVEN USED IT YET. Anyone else have a similar issue with this app on the Droid?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am currently writing the backend for a service which has 3 clients: browser, android native and iphone native. I am having a little trouble with coming up with an authentication system since I don't know what can really be done on the clients.
I am using django + twisted for the backend.
Basically, I am going to be writing RestfulAPIs to open up for the clients on both phones to call.
Now the real question is, how should I come up with an authentication system?
I have thought about using sessionids, this works very well with the browser and I can use django's integrated app for that.
However, I don't know if it's possible for both the iphone and android to obtain a unique sessionid on the handset. Should I write an API call to distribute unique sessionids?
if that's the case, is it possible for me to still use django's authentication system since a lot of the stuff here are customized? ( I am not even using a rdbms - I am sticking with mongodb, so I was on the verge of dropping django's authentication app ftm).
I have looked at foursquare's API and their basic auth method requires you to pass in user:password in every http request header. That adds 1 additional authentication each call which can kind of seem excessive.

I know that this should be possible, but I haven't found a very easy way to do this on Android.Essentially, I'm taking voltage data, and I want to save it in PCM format. Seems like the audio APIs built in to android are more geared for directly recording from the mic, and not so much for lower level signal processing type work (at least for saving raw data to a file). I end up getting a ANR (Activity Not Responding) error. I would like to move this to a thread to prevent blocking the UI. However when I try this I run into multiple problems.First openFileOutput is only available in my activity. I worked around this by passing the ObjectOutputStream to the thread. After that I could save the object but later when I tried to reload I get a java.io.EOF Exeception. does anyone have a good pattern for writing objects to a file from a thread?
