Android :: Gps Applications / To Download Maps
Sep 27, 2010
I'm currently using the HTC Aria on AT&T 200mb/month plan. I normally use a good chunk of that a month already. I was wondering if there is an app that allows me to download maps that can be used off line and has gps turn by turn navigation on the downloaded maps. So essentially I'm looking for a navigation app which does not use data.

I'm trying to use my G1 as my GPS device when i go hiking. Since i will hit many spots outside of tower coverage, i am wondering if there is a way to download maps and save them to my phone, so that my GPS location will not be a blue dot amidst a sea of gray boxes. Is there any way for this? Google maps and AndNav both download stuff temporarily, correct? they won't show any maps if they can't locate Edge or 3G network.

Anyone know if there's a way to explicitly have the google maps app download some maps?
I'm about to go on a trip where I suspect I'll either be out of cell phone range, or be on roaming data ($$$). I'd rather just turn off the cellular radio, and have google maps up with the GPS, but not sure how possible it is.

Often while using Google Maps, it takes a while to load the maps. I was wondering if it was possible to download these maps to my SD card for faster loading.

The last update to File Manager included an applications manager too. It enables you to backup* and uninstall applications.
On the applications list 'Maps' is in there twice, both 4.3.0 installed on 2010-07-06 and both 4102KB. Would I actually have two copies installed? I'm not that keen on the idea of uninstalling one to find out for obvious reasons! this seems to put them onto the SD card which is quite useful

TrekBuddy is very good, but it produces cache for rmaps and many other apps, but not for Google Maps.So I wonder if there is a tool which can do this, or convert the cache of TrekBuddy to the cache of Google Maps, which can be used by android cell phones?

I own HTC Desire which has a built-in GPS. It's a really great option, but what really annoys me is this: when I use GPS, my data connection must also be enabled in order to refresh Google Maps. And since data packets in Croatia are still pretty expensive, this is not a option for me. Anyway, the question is: is there a way to fully download Maps to your SD Card without having data connection enabled, but GPS only?
So, just like with standard GPS devices.

I tried to download a program away from the android apps page--ereader from ereader.com and was told that the phone was set to not let it download form anything except android app or att apps. Is this right and is there a way to disable it if it is true? I want to download a St. Louis Cardinals baseball app from the Str. Louis Post newspaper and want to know if it will work before I pay for the app.

Just got my HTC Desire today! Trying to download apps via the android market. Selected the app, and it tells me it will be downloaded. I go to the download section and the app says starting downloading and just stays at that. I have canceled and started again but no joy. I have purchased HTC Desire (via mobiles.co.uk) with Orange's Panther plan. Orange Maps comes free on Panther 30 plan.
Since my phone came from mobiles.co.uk, it didn't come with Orangeworld or Orange Maps application pre-installed.
When I try to download Orange Maps application, Orange webpage tells me that my handset is not supported. Which is not true, because HTC Desire is listed as a supported handset on Orange Maps website.
When I looked at orange world > help & costs > Your technical info, my handset is being shown as "Orange SPV M2000" instead of HTC Desire. Is it possible that orange website is not recognizing HTC Desire correctly because of which it is not allowing me to download Orange Maps application?

I just got the Evo on Sprint today. Everything works fine but cannot download any apps. I have spent several hours today going through various message boards. I have rebooted the phone several times. I updated the profile and PRL. I have turned on the wi-fi and turned off the wi-fi. I downloaded the HTC sync to my laptop and tried connectig through there (really just reaching for straws at this point).
I even found this procedure and did this as well "1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button. 2. Wait for the screen with the 3 Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button. 3. Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE, and then press POWER. 4. When asked to confirm, press VOLUME UP Regards"

I know there is a dedicated section for apps, but they work different on each phone, so what are my fellow DHD users using.
My current Top 10
1 Winamp
An excellent replacement, tried a few after being spoilt rotten by the iPhone's music player. In Winamp, I've finally found a music player to compare to this.
2 Peep
The standard HTC Twitter client looks good and is easy to use.
3 Tune In Radio
Not really used this much but used it loads on the iPhone. A huge directory of stations to listen to.
4 MP3 Music Downloader
Get music tracks for FREE (legally debatable) But what I like is the ability to preview on the go, nice if you think "I wish I could listen to that track right now"
5 Google Maps
Superb free navigation, used it to find a pub I wanted to go to (on foot) Drains the battery if you have it on for too long though
FOUR GREAT GAMES
6 Paper Toss
7 Angry Birds
8 Teeter
9 Bubble
10 Backgrounds - shed loads of free backgrounds to choose for your phone, nice and easy to use, all in catagories for easy navigation

Is there an app of some sort that i can use to download maps onto my phone, to store on my sd card? i only use the Internet through wi-fi, and i have read on all the specs pages for the desire that it has an internal GPS chip.. so can i use it without the Internet? i know that Google maps wont work unless you have the internet on at all time, and i have searched through the app store for a map (of Australia, since that is where i live) but to no avail.

I am taking a trip to Asia starting tomorrow. I wanted to know, does the GPS on the droid actually work globally as the name implies? And even if it does work, without service in that region google maps will most likely not work for directions, however is there a way or an app that can download maps of the region for the GPS to work off of?

I am new on here as I only got my HTC Hero the other day, and while trawling the internet for answers this place kept coming up. I have a few questions about this phone, or more to the point, the android OS running it. I see that it only has android 1.5 on it at the moment, and there are no newer upgrades available yet. That said, I've read in numerous places on the net that android 2.1 is coming to the HTC hero at the end of this week or start of next week depending on your network, is this true? What would this upgrade actually improve? My new phone seems pretty stable and usable as it is already, wasn't voted best phone of 2009 for nothing I guess. My second query is about the apps from the android market. When this 2.1 upgrade comes, I expect it'll wipe the phone clean and reinstall with the newer OS. If any apps are already paid for, will I have to pay again to download them a second time? Or is there any way of me backing them up first?
