Jun 2, 2010
I recently ordered a Droid Incredible and starting looking through the Google documentation for the Android, but I learn better by reading a book. So I need some programming book recommendations for Androids.

Anyone know of a really good phone book type app for the Hero? I hate the organization of the Hero's contacts, etc. The moment for peats sake has at least the tabular tabs at the top for organization. I like that.. I saw Phonebook in the market, but the reviews dont speak volumes.

Can anyone recommend a good Beginner Android programming book? When I was in college about 20 years ago I used to program a lot (Basic, Pascal, COBOL, Fortran). I dabbled a little bit in VisualBASIC about five years go, but it was really a hack. Now, I really have a burning desire to write some applications for my Android phone, but I really don't know anything about all the new programming technologies (OOP etc). I'm looking for a good book that will teach me modern programming using Java and the Android platform.
I've seen good books on learning Java 6 and some good books on programming Android (but they all seem to assume you know Java or C), but nothing that seems to combine the two. I'd really like to learn Java right on the Android platform to begin with if possible. I know there are a lot of resources available online but unfortunately much of the time that I will spend on this endeavor is when I won't have internet access so a good book would go a long way.

I'm looking for a good book to buy to help me with OpenGL ES. This is obviously going to be for Android, but I suppose the benefits will spill over to iPhone development too. Although I'm not specifically opposed to a general OpenGL book, I'm not going to be using it on my desktop (at least not professionally). Wouldn't hurt to throw a few good online references too, although what I've found with online tutorials is that they teach a code snippet but not the whole picture. Or, they don't target ES (embedded systems, like Android).

I have made apps for the iPhone, but want to also code for the Android but want to know if it is first worth my time, second worth my having to learn another language, and third worth the effort in the sense that am I going to make a profit from this. Also if in any way Android code is similar, then will it be hard to bring the iPhone (Xcode) files, or copy and paste my iPhone code into the Android code.

I will admit - I've never had a smart phone. Never. I was going to get one last year, but waited b/c I heard 2010 was 'the year of the smart phone' - and I'm glad I waited.Though I'd have to see it in person to know for sure, but I'm almost positive that DroidX will be my first smartphone. I'm VERY excited, but I want to make sure that I'm educated enough to use it for all it's worth (ie: my mom has had every iphone, but just leared to text message last month). Is there some place/book/thread/site that I can study which would tell me about smartphones from the very most basic all the way to the more advanced? I'm a smart girl, but I have to start somewhere!

I have my HTC Desire and the Facebook application is the worst thing it should happen. It sync all my friends phone numbers and mixes with all my other phone numbers. Can some one in clear state of mind ask Android/Facebook to give us the option to select what friends we want in our phone list? I like the Facebook app but deleted it once it messes my phone!

I would like to know which method you need to use to access the unlock screen and replace it (something like SlideUnlock or Widget Locker). I want to design an app which could work on any phone even those without a custom ROM. This app would then be overriding the default Lock Screen.
You probably need to create a service but I can't seem to find a source code or a good tutorial on it.

If you have an interest in reviewing an upcoming Android development book, we are in need of an "expert" technical proof-reader. The title is Unlocking Android, published by Manning. You can learn more about the book here: http://manning.com/ableson. ( Note that I am providing this link so you can learn more about the title to determine if you are interested in the technical proofreader project, not to promote it.) This is a paid position, paying $1 per page. The total page count is approximately 400 pages. If you are interested, please send an email to me at fableson at msiservices.com There is an aggressive schedule for completing this project so please respond only if you are an experienced Android developer and can devote time to this project over the next 2 to 3 weeks.

I am looking for a phone book app which will help me stop making international calls. I want to be able to selectively pick the numbers I never want to dial as I have run a huge bill by mistake. I don't want to put international barring, as I won't be able to text abroad. I just want the app to stop me from calling abroad. Does anyone know of any app or know of a workaround? I currently use Phonebook and I don't know if this is possible with this app.

I'm really new in Android programming, so I have a simple question getting a phone number from contacts in my application. The method I want to implement is that the user clicks a button in my app and will be forwarded to the contacts. In contacts user has to click on a phone number and this number should be returned to a textfield. Is there a simple way to do this instead to implement it by ContentResolver?
